Chapter 14: Goofy Gets a Date
Jamie was in the library with Max and Goofy, just doing their homework as Goofy kept talking about what they got to do.
"So after we compare and contrast the Age of Enlightenment's dark period with the Spanish Inquisition's recessionary trends, we can get a head start on our trigonorm-- Uh, triggy-- Uh, math. Then as a treat, I'll get us tickets to the Museum of Natural Arts and Sciences. I hear there's a spectacular leech exhibit. But only if we finish all our homework," Goofy explained.
Max just sighed, not into it at all. Jamie noticed this and placed her hand on his to let him know that it'll get better. He smiled at her until a paper airplane hit him square on the forehead.
"Huh?" they both exclaimed.
Max picked it up and unfolded it to see a note for both him and Jamie. It read "Meet us Music Appreciation Aisle 911!" They looked in that direction to see PJ waving his hand in the air. They quietly tried to sneak away until...
"Where you goin', guys?" Goofy asked.
"Oh, yeah! Well, I was just gonna go to-- You know, go to the--" Max stumbled over his words.
Jamie tapped him and pointed to a desk where people could get library cards. Max smiled and winked at her.
"To take you to sign up for your library card. Dad, all new students need one," Max answered and pulled Goofy towards the desk.
He got him to the desk where a woman was stamping in books while Jamie went over to the Music Appreciation Aisle.
"Where's Max?" PJ asked.
"He's distracting his dad so he can slip out," Jamie answered.
They looked to see them getting the librarian's attention.
"A-Ahem," Max cleared his throat.
She stopped and stated, "Good morning, gentlemen. I am the Head Librarian, versed in all aspects of your school's library, including, but not limited to fiction, nonfiction, periodicals, reference and policy. How may I help you?"
"Hi there, Miss 'Marpole-ee.' Marpole. Marpole! My Dad needs a library card. Could you--" Max requested.
"Oh, it would be my pleasure. We here at the college library believe that owning a library card is a privilege, not a right," Miss Marpole replied.
As she continued, Jamie tapped Max on the shoulder and signaled him to come on. They snuck back to the Music Appreciation Aisle.
"Consequently, we expect students to treat the Dewey Decimal System with respect. You'll find these helpful to your library experience," Miss Marpole said.
"Well, I'll be! Is that a genuine mood ring you're wearin'?" Goofy asked.
"Well, oh...Yes. Well, yes it is. I'm a collector of '70s memorabilia and such. Sort of silly, huh?" Miss Marpole blushed.
"What, are you kiddin'? This here's a Gilligan's Island fan club seashell," Goofy showed her the shell.
She gasped and exclaimed, "Get out! Do you remember the one when the Professor built a noncombustible engine out of coconut shells and sand?"
"Gawrsh, yeah, little buddy," Goofy answered.
Jamie smirked at Max as she asked, "Are you sure you're not just playing Match Maker?"
Max chuckled in response as he watched his dad bond with the librarian.
"Come on! We're supposed to be practicin' for the "X" Games," PJ urged.
"I love all that '70s stuff!" Goofy continued.
"Come on, we're out of here," Max said and they all left the library.
"Oh, gosh! Remember the 'Boogie Duck'?" Miss Marpole asked excitedly.
"That was my all-time favorite!" Goofy exclaimed.
They started quacking around like crazy as one of the members of the board was leading a group for a tour.
"Here at the college library you'll find a most--" he started.
Then he gasped at what Miss Marpole and Goofy were doing.
"A-A-Ahem! Miss Marpole! In a library?" he asked, appalled.
They both slowly stopped and looked pretty embarrassed.
"Really! And now, I actually think that the Psych Department will be most refreshing," the board member said, leading the group out of the library.
Miss Marpole and Goofy looked at each other shyly.
"Well, uh, I really should be getting back to work," she stated.
As she was walking away, Goofy decided to ask her something.
"Say, um, Miss Marpole..." he started.
"Oh, you can call me Sylvia," she smiled.
"Gawrsh! Sylvia. Ah-yuck. I was just a-wonderin' if maybe you'd like to..." Goofy replied.
"Go out to dinner?" Sylvia asked.
"Well, then maybe afterwards, uh..." he continued.
"Go dancing?" she added.
"Sure! So, if, uh...Well, if you're free on..." Goofy replied.
"Saturday? Oh, I'd love to. 7:00?" Sylvia suggested.
"All right. Ah-yuck. See ya then," he said.
"You know, Goofy, you're pretty groovy," Sylvia told him.
As she walked away, Goofy couldn't help but blush.
"Aw, shucks! She said I'm pretty groovy," he sighed dreamily.
He went back to the table where he was doing his homework.
"Hey, Maxie! Guess what? Maxie? I got a date," he said, going to look for his son.
