I anticipate that An Extra Pump of Sugar is going to piss a lot of people off—not because it lacks a happy ending, but because it lacks a perfect love story. And that's okay. In fact, that's my intention.

Millennials and Gen Z have had to navigate a world of dating apps, social media, hookup culture, and instant gratification. And as wonderful as it is to distance ourselves from purity culture, I think it's important to hold tight to our self-worth and emotional needs.

Not to mention, our empathy.

I see too many kids accepting too little, too many peers paralyzed by the paradox of choice, and too many intimate encounters ending in agonizing silence and emotional abuse.

So I hope Moe and Theo can serve as example of what not to do.

(And what patience, introspection, communication, and a little self-care can sow.)
