Part 5
Part 5: Strength and Strategy
The clanging of weights and the rhythmic thumping of music filled the air in the campus gym. Today's workout for the sprint team focused on building strength, a crucial part of our training routine. I settled into the familiar rhythm of lifting, the burn in my muscles a welcome reminder of the work I was putting in.
Beside me, Paige was working through her set, her face set in determined concentration. Paige was not only my teammate but one of my closest friends. We shared a lot of the same classes, including Biochemistry, which had become a running topic of conversation during our workouts.
"So, did you finish the assignment for Biochem?" Paige asked, setting down her weights and taking a sip of water.
I nodded, wiping the sweat from my brow. "Barely. The last question nearly killed me. I swear. Professor Miller loves making our lives difficult."
Paige laughed, adjusting the weight on her barbell. "Tell me about it. I stayed up way too late trying to figure it out. But hey, at least we've got the meet to look forward to. You ready for Imani?"
Imani Johnson--the name was enough to make my stomach flip. She was not just another competitor but my old high school rival from the University of New Orleans. Imani had a knack for getting under my skin, with her flirtatious comments that seemed to be aimed at me more than anyone else.
"Imani and her flirting," Paige mused, raising an eyebrow as she watched my reaction. "You sure there wasn't anything going on between you two back in high school?"
I busied myself adjusting my weights, not meeting her eyes. "Nothing worth talking about," I replied evasively. The truth was more complicated. There had been a few moments--stolen glances, lingering conversations--but I preferred to keep those memories to myself.
Paige smirked, not pressing the issue further, and shifted the conversation."So, speaking of admirers, I hard Markell's been asking about you again."
I rolled my eyes, suppressing a sigh. Markell was the star football player for our University, a charismatic guy with a knack for drawing attention. Apparently, he'd set his sights on me, much to the delight of the campus rumor mill.
"People keep saying we'd look good together, but I'm not interested," I said firmly focusing on my workout. "I just want to concentrate on my education and track. Besides, I barely have time to breathe, let alone date."
Paige nodded, her expression understanding. "I get it. But if he tries anything, just let me know, okay?"
The conversation shifted back to Biochemsitry and upcoming meets as we continued our workout. I appreciated Paige's friendship and her ability to navigate through the noise of campus life with me.
Finally, the day of the meet arrived. We piled into the team bus, excitement buzzing through the air. As I loaded my bag onto the bus, I noticed Markell approaching, his usual confident stride unmissable.
"Hey, Raylynn!" he called, catching up to me. "Just wanted to wish you luck at the meet. And maybe see if you'd like to grab coffee sometime?"
I plastered on a polite smile, trying to find a way to let him down easy. "Thanks, Markell, I appreciate it. But I'm really focused on track right now. Maybe another time?"
He chuckled, undeterred. "No worries, I get it. Just know the offer stands."
I nodded, quickly making my way onto the bus before the conversation could stretch any longer. Settling into my seat, I breathed a sigh of relief. The last thing I needed was another distraction.
As the bus rumbled to life and we pulled away from campus, I gazed out the window, my mind shifting to the race ahead. The tension of the competition mingled with the excitement of proving myself on the track. I was ready for whatever awaited, knowing I'd done everything I could to prepare.
As the miles passed and the scenery blurred by, I felt a sense of calm settle over me. The was the moment, a chance to focus on what truly mattered. With the support of my friends and the determination I'd built over the years, I knew I was ready to rise to the occasion.
This was my time.
