Engima
(Italics for the play)
"Alright, next!"
There was some shuffling before a someone stepped forward. Fidgeting in a slightly oversized trench coat, he avoided looking anyone in the eye. "And what role are you auditioning for?"
"Um, J-J.D." He mumbled. The others hoping to audition whispered to each other.
"He looks too nervous to be doing this."
"Is he for real?"
"I hope he doesn't vomit. It'll be a pain to clean up."
"Ah, just get it over with!"
With each comment, he shrunk back, until you could only see the top of his head peeking out from the collar of the coat. Coughing, the judges quieted everyone down.
"Whenever you're ready."
Taking a deep breath, the boy closed his eyes. His entire form relaxed. With the start of the music, his eyes snapped open.
"All is forgiven baby! Come on, get dressed. You're my date to the pep rally tonight!"
The other participants could only stare at him in shock. Moments before, he had been a small, nervous, awkward boy who looked like he would pass out at any second and now in his place stood a confident, sly, manipulative player. His sudden transformation surprised the audience and their mouths were wide open in shock.
"You chucked me out like I was trash.
For that you should be dead.
But!
But!
But!
Then it hit me like a flash.
What if high school went away instead?
Those assholes are the key!
They're keeping you away from me!
They made you blind, messed up your mind
But I can set you free!"
His movements were erratic and captured everyone's attention. He punctured each word with a flourish, arms and legs moving in synch.
"You left me and I fell apart.
I punched the wall and cried.
Bam!
Bam!
Bam!
Then I found you changed my heart and set loose all that truthful shit inside!
And so I built a bomb,
Tonight our school is Vietnam!
Let's guarantee they'll never see their senior prom!"
With each word, he grew more and more unhinged, until it was impossible to tell if he was just acting or expressing his true desires.
"I was meant to be yours!
We were meant to be one!
Don't give up on me now!
Finish what we've begun!
I was meant to be yours!"
All of a sudden, he slowed down. His eyes, once filled with anger and despair, were now filled with a desperate love. His emotions were perfectly in tune with his character. It was absolutely riveting.
"So when the high school gym goes BOOM with everyone inside..
Pkhw!
Pkhw!
Pkhw!
In the rubble of their tomb,
We'll plant this note explaining why they died!"
He laughed and danced around as if there was no tomorrow.
"'We, the students of Westerburg High,
Will die.
Our burnt bodies may finally get through,
To you.
Your society churns out slaves and blanks,
No thanks.
Signed the Students of Westerburg High,
'Goodbye.'"
"We'll watch the smoke pour out the doors.
Bring marshmallows, we'll make s'mores!
We can smile and cuddle while the fire roars!"
The judges weren't even taking notes. They were completely submerged in the performance before them.
"I was meant to be yours!
We were meant to be one!
I can't take it alone!
Finish what we've begun!
YOU WERE MEANT TO BE MINE!
I AM ALL THAT YOU NEED!
YOU CARVED OPEN MY HEART!
CAN'T JUST LEAVE ME TO BLEED!"
His voice boomed, loud and strong, before falling to a pleading whisper.
"Veronica, open the- open the door, please.
Veronica, open the door.
Veronica, can we not fight anymore, please.
Can we not fight anymore.
Veronica, sure, you're scared,
I've been there. I can set you free!
Veronica, don't make me come in there!
I'm gonna count to three!
One!
Two!
Fuck it!"
He made a shoving motion, nearly toppling over from the amount of force he used.
"Oh my God... No! Veronica!"
With a dramatic 'thump', he collapsed to his knees. His entire body trembled. They watched in awe as tears started streaming down his cheeks.
"Please ... don't .... leave me alone.
You were ... all I could trust
I ... can't ... do this alone.
STILL I WILL IF I MUST!..."
As the final notes rang out, there was silence. Closing his eyes again, the boy took a deep breath. When he opened them back up, he reverted to his previous self. Immediately he shrank away from the amount of people staring at him.
"Th-thank you f-for watc-ching."
And with a quick bow, he darted off.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Sorry that this is mainly made up of lyrics, I just really wanted to do something involving the beautiful soundtrack of Heathers. I'm not exactly a fan since I've never actually seen the play or movie, but after watching several thousand animations, I can safely say I really enjoy it's plot and characters. Don't worry though, the next chapter will be made up of my words.
QOTC: I've run outta questions to ask you guys about the book, so instead I'll be splicing it up by asking personal questions! (Dun, dun, duuuuuun) What's your favorite musical and why?
Thanks for reading!
