Prologue
Amelia's POV
"Kelsey, be careful!" I yelled. My daughter just grinned at me as she leapt across the rocks leading to the back garden. I bent back over to focus on the weeds attacking my roses.
Suddenly, two hands slide over my shoulders and I scream, jumping up, trowel in hand to smack whoever startled me.
"Amy, relax." Rory says, raising his hands in the air.
"Stop right there, street trash." Kelsey says, mimicking Officer Gray, the local police officer.
I can't help but laugh as Kelsey pokes her fingers into Rory's back. "I'm afraid I'll have to take you downtown." she growls. Rory hides a smile as he obliges and allows Kelsey to push him towards the door to the house. "and make me some lemonade." she adds.

"Mama." Kelsey says that night, "can you tell me a story?"
"Sure." I reply. "which one would you like to hear?"
"Tell me the one about your imaginary friend that you ran away with." she says.
I begin to tear up a bit. "when I was a little girl," I begin, "about your age, I had an imaginary friend. When I grew up, he came back. He wasn't imaginary after all. He was real."
"Wow." she sighs. "really real?"
I laugh. "Yes, really real. He's called The Doctor. He comes from somewhere else. He has a box called the TARDIS that's bigger on the inside and can travel anywhere in time and space." I pause dramatically and Kelsey's eyes widen with excitement.
"What happened, mamma? What happened to The Doctor?" She begs.
"I ran away with him. And I never stopped running."
"Never ever?"
"Never ever." I agree.
"Do you miss him?"
I stare out the window of Kelsey's bedroom. "Yeah, I do. But he's up there in the stars, protecting the universe."
"Can I go outside and see the stars?" Kelsey asks.
"NO." I snap immediately. Kelsey looks up at me, a very frightened look in her eyes.
"Sorry." I say. Kelsey smiles in forgiveness and leans against my arm.
"Did I ever tell you about your long lost sister Melody?" I ask.

I can hear the creak of floorboards from down the hall just as my head hits the pillow. feet patter down the hall and I sit up. The back door slams as I race to the hall.
I look out the kitchen window to see Kelsey on the grass looking at the stars. I sigh. She's okay. I think.
A rustling in the bushes tells me I am familiar with all too well. "RORY!" I yell. I try to open the door, but the lock is jammed with...jam? KELSEY!!!!
Rory appears by my side. "What is it?" He asks sleepily.
"There's a freaking weeping angel outside and Kelsey is out there!" I tell him frantically. He is awake immediately and runs off to get his gun.
"KELSEY!" I yell. She doesn't seem to hear me, but I can hear her just fine.
"Oh doctor! DOCTOR? Mama misses you! Please come back and make her be happy!" She says to the stars.
The weeping angel steps out of the hedges and I stare intently at it.
Don't blink I think. Blinking means losing your baby girl. Blinking means she's gone forever. Do not blink.
And then I blink.
And Kelsey is gone.
