Chapter 1: Four Years Later
Kelsey's POV
My head slams against the wall and I fall backwards onto the floor. Looking up, I see Mr. Ellington's face. He manages to crack a small smile as he moves closer, coiling the whip in his hand. Shivering, I stand up. He steps closer and closer to me, and I can barely stand. My short red dress and matching red high tops are now stained an even darker shade of red as the whip cracks around my ankles and my waist. I crumple onto the floor again and he snaps the whip against the floor. He raises to strike again, but before he can, the clock strikes midnight. It is over.
"You got lucky this time, Kelsey." He snaps, coiling the whip in his hand again. He turns and walks slowly down the hall, tapping a four beat rhythm as he goes. I sigh and lean against the wall to wait for the guards to take my back to my cell. I know that if I do not follow the routine, I have no chance of finding my parents.
As two men in black suits drag me to my cell, I can't help but notice a new face in the prison. Her mop of tan hair stands out surprisingly against all of the blues and greens and pinks from the other cells.
I am tossed roughly against the stone wall of my cell. A loud clank resonates as the door locks. I manage to sit up and use my given materials to clean myself up a bit. The woman with the tan hair peeks through the small cell window at me.
"You okay?" She asks. I give a curt nod before rifling through my trunk for a different outfit. I can see in her eyes that she doesn't believe me. I slip off my bloodstained dress and sneakers, quickly replacing them with a tight midnight blue dress and black knee high boots.
"Try these." She says, passing a pair of strappy silver pumps through the window. I give a thankful smile before changing my shoes. Leaning against the wall, I decide to talk to her.
"What did Mr. Ellington want with you?" I ask, running a comblike device through my hair.
"I'm not here for Ellington." She replies. I stare at her curiously.
"What are you here for then?" I ask her. She gives a small smile before replying.
"I killed someone. Someone truly amazing." She allows a tear to fall as she speaks. "A man of many faces."
"Who?" I ask. She definitely has my attention now. I place the comb on the floor and begin working on my nails, picking the dried blood from underneath them.
She runs a hand through her hair before turning to me. "I killed the doctor."
"He's just a story." I say, glancing sideways at her.
"No, he's real." She replies tartly.
"What's your name?" I ask.
"My name is River Song." She says. My eyes widen once I hear her name.
"I've heard of you before. My Mom told me about my sister, River Song, or Melody Pond to some."
She raises her eyebrow at me. "Melody Pond?" She asks. I nod again and grab a small mirror from under my pillow.
" I haven't heard that name in a long time." she admits. I apply a thin layer of silver eyeshadow to my eyelids and continue.
"My mother used to tell me about my long lost sister, Melody..." My voice trails off when I realize the obvious truth and River grins. "that means you're my older sister." I whisper.
