Love's Melody
Alex was a simple person, enjoying coffee and reading idly as the days flickered by. College classes weren't that difficult for the upcoming marine biologist. The little prodigy loved animals and read almost every book there was on them. Not long after, life took a turn.
Alex had met another student from the same college. What intrigued the feminine Alex was how the student took an interest to them, almost instantly. Obviously, Alex's mid length dusty brown hair was unusual, they didn't have time to brush it most days with their job at the library and their constant mindless need in books.
No, this other college student had asked Alex on a date. At a small coffee shop, no less. It was to Alex's surprise that this usually nameless face had taken an interest in a mediocre student as themself.
"A date?" Alex asked in shock. "You mean, like, kissing and holding hands?" The other person simply nodded and Aled couldn't help take note of their small looking frame. Was this person a girl or a guy? With no piercings or clothing preference, it was hard to tell. The person had long lashes and beautiful brown eyes. It almost reminded Alex of the light brown in coffee, but that wasn't all.
In addition to their 6'3" stature, the person had ginger hair and little freckles all over their face. The laggy sweatshirt shielded any identifying features. Jeans and a pair of black and white converse was the only other thing they were wearing. "Right now?"
Alex wasn't surprised that this stranger got there after the soon to be marine biologist's shift at work. If this stranger knew where Alex worked, Alex was sure this red head just sat and waited. It wouldn't be that strange, many people did, more specifically workers of the library.
Everyone came in 15 minutes early to make sure everything was clean before they took over the desk. No one wanted a messy desk, especially with the books that had to be moved and put away and sorted.
The person nodded excitedly. "Yeah! Get to know each other, right? I mean, everyone has to at some point." The ginger winked playfully. "It's on me. What could it hurt?"
"Can I at least have a name first?" Alex inquired before gathering his things in preparation to leave to the so called date. While putting the things in their bag, Alex could see the student's cheeks get bright pink with humiliation and borderline anger.
"Syd, short for Sydney. It's a weird name." Syd, or supposedly Syd, had a sort of grumble on their face. Cute, if not for the intention of the grumble. Alex chuckled lightly.
"Fine. But if I don't like the coffee place, I'm leaving," Alex picked up his heavy bag with ease, the cheap library table shaking slightly from the loss of weight.
Sydney grinned like a cat at this statement, winking at the brunette. "I promise, you surely won't hate this one. I've heard a little theory that you enjoy Vendricks?"
Alex's eyes widened, mouth agape. "There's no way! That place is like, 10 dollars for a small! That's way too expensive, I wouldn't make you spend money there." Sydney just grinned and took Alex's hand.
Alex noted all the times they had seen Sydney in class, quietly taking notes. It was almost surprising to see this energy from their classmate. The usually quiet Sydney was the laughing stock at the class. Classic red head, had the Irish accent, and as the classmates called Syd, 'whiny'. Alex couldn't see this as the case when this person was so assertive and hadn't whined once. Maybe they had misjudged Syd? Surely not the whole class could've done that, but now Alex wasn't so sure.
It was a common known thing that Syd used to date the cheerleader, and why Syd broke up with her was said to be because Syd said that the cheerleader wasn't accommodating their specific needs, but even this girl didn't know Syd's gender. Who knows? Maybe some freak parents raised Syd to hide that thing.
Over the course of the next few weeks, the two had gotten closer and closer. Eventually, the two started dating. This remained, until...
Alex and Syd sat in Vendricks, their favorite place when they had enough money. Syd just grinned at the soon to be marine biologist and got on the ground, hands searching for something. The ginger then turned to Alex with a wide grin. "Alex?"
"Did you know that a whale's mouth could swallow you whole? That's insane, they must have huge mouths! I want to go swimming in the depths one day..."
"Alex, babe-"
"And just imagine how much wildlife hasn't been discovered! I want to discover a beautiful fish, one of those deep sea ones!"
"Baby-"
"And the water must look so beautiful form under-"
"BABE!" Alex jumped a bit from the sudden volume change. with flushed cheeks, the brown haired student just nodded for Syd to continue.
"Ever since I met you, the world has looked so much brighter, vivid with blues and reds and so many other colors. Your heart is as precious as a pearl, and if you'd allow me..." Syd sunk one knee. "Will you make me the happiest being on this earth and marry me?"
Alex was almost in tears but nodded meekly. "Y-yes...." With a squeal, Syd hugged Alex tight.
