Pretty Boy
I was honestly just bored, and looking through my notifications, when I realized that someone recommended this book for me to read. Now, at first glance it seemed pretty generic, and like 99% of the other books out there, but it being completed, and the first chapter at least being decent, I decided not to drop it like I do for many other books. Now, I'm glad that I did read it, because it seems to do many things right, but at the same time has a few flaws that just don't seem right. Also, the first half of this will be spoiler free, second half, not so much, so be wary.
Plot:
So this is a part of the book that I honestly believe is just 'ok'. It goes through decent plot motions, standard for most everything. There are many ups and downs, and some of them do seem forced, but they are much better than having a stale or flat plot-line. Honestly though, some of the stuff just seems to extreme, and not something that would allow a relationship, even though that relationship or 'ship' is whats pushed through out the story, but I will talk more about that later.
Conventions:
Alright, so I'm going to be honest here, I used the text to speech to read the story to me every night, because I was too tired. Now, I never had any problems understanding things, and it really was great (though it was strange to hear the voice say serena as se-rahhhh-nah).
Characters:
The only real development that we got in the story, was of some random side characters, and though the others seemed to change, it was only really their views on others, and not their own ideals. This really didnt hurt much, as the character interactions were really all that was needed. Of course, this did confuse me at some points as to the character motivations.
SPOILER TIME!
Alright, with all of those generic things out of the way, it's time to get into the specifics. Now, I really feel that this book reveals a lot of themes that show up everywhere. One of those huge things, is that Amourshipping, from a relationship standpoint, is written to be terrible. Imagine the hunger games, but Katniss gets with that first guy who had been her friend in district 12. It would just seem generic, and against everything that the story had built up to, but I mean it 'had to happen' because the book was based off of that. Honestly, Amourshipping has too much plot armor. Even I am guilty of doing this, but at the same time I try to write it in a more logical way. Well my rants aside, this story seems to sorta do that. It seems to try to explain it, but just seems extreme. For example, when ash BEATS SOMEONE UP, it's just sorta brushed aside. Now, I could understand one character brushing it aside, BUT ALL OF HIS FRIENDS DO. It is just like there are no repercussions for their actions. Now, other than that, the story itself just has generic tropes for the side characters, and only really develops Lilly. LILLY. That just confused me, because she really seemed to just go away after her being the whole 'villain' thing.
Overall, I enjoyed this story, but it's not without its flaws, though those flaws are really prevalent all over the Amourshipping community.
