WARNING: If you have a male bestfriend, this story will teach you to run to him right now and confess that you're in love with him so you can have 'your' kind of moment.
"I already picked navy blue suit for tonight and now you're saying wear the black one." Kiaan complained.
"Who told you to pick the blue one? I always select your attire." Natasha huffed.
"Nat, how will it matter if I wear the black one or blue one? The dress code is always for couples. And besides that you are from Bride's side while I am going just as a business associate from Groom's side." Kiaan reasoned, his voice almost inaudible due the commotion on the other side. She thought he must be busy in the office.
"I don't care about that. We will be going together to the wedding so we need to match. No further arguments." Natasha declared.
"It's not like you're going to listen to me." Kiaan complained from the other side of phone.
"Right. Pick me up at 7." Natasha said, nodding a little no matter he couldn't see her.
"Alright. I need to go for a meeting right now so I'll talk to you later." Kiaan said and Natasha bid him byes hanging up the phone.
She made her way towards the bedroom only to see her now favourite maroon ethnic dress laid out on the bed. She always thought that blue doesn't go too well with maroon or let's just say she likes to see her bestfriend in black more.
After many pleadings, threats and warnings from her mother, she finally agreed to attend the reception of the wedding of her female cousin. She was never a fan of family functions or attendings so she easily skipped the pre wedding and main wedding functions, lying about work being the main reason.
And now she had to attend the reception that was tonight in the dress her mother sent. Her happiness was no bounds when she got to know that her bestfriend, Kiaan Aggarwal is going to attend the same reception because of business relations with the Groom.
Being at 26, her mother always pestered her to get married. No matter how many times she had told them that she doesn't trust anyone on that level to get in such a sacred bond, her mother just doesn't listens. Even today she had told her to bring a date no matter if it's a fake one because every girl in the family was all set to bring their boyfriends and Natasha could still care less. She has more important work rather than to find a fake boyfriend. So the best idea she could come up with was going with Kiaan. Although, her whole family knows about Kiaan being her bestfriend, what she cared about was that she got a partner for tonight.
She was now standing in front of the full length mirror in her room done with the makeup which she preferred light and her black messy curls that reached her waist. It was already 6:55 and she knew Kiaan was about to arrive where she was dressed in her dress' blouse and black tights. Just as she was about to wear her ethnic skirt, the doorbell rang indicating the arrival of Kiaan.
Running in her small blouse and black tights, bare feet, she reached for the door revealing a full dressed Kiaan, in a black expensive suit.
"What the fuck Nat? You're still not dressed and I thought I'll get a good listening from you about getting late." Kiaan complained.
"Dude you're early." Natasha huffed.
"Two minutes early. Right." Kiaan said looking at his silver rolex watch and Natasha just shrugged in response.
"Why the hell are you standing on the door like this? People will see you." Kiaan said getting inside her apartment, closing the door after.
"I was about to get dressed and you came." Natasha explained getting back inside her room with Kiaan following.
Taking the skirt again in her hands, she wore it in the room itself as she was still in her tights. She tightened the knot of the skirt placing it at the correct direction , now almost ready.
As usual, Kiaan had made himself at home on Natasha's bed eating the remaining chips Natasha was having in between.
"That was my last one." Natasha whined.
"I'll buy you loads of them on our way back." Kiaan replied stuffing them inside his mouth making Natasha's eyes twinkle in excitement.
She quickly wore a pair golden heels and sprayed her favourite perfume which Kiaan bought her from his visit to Italy.
"I am ready. Let's go." Natasha said standing in front of him.
"I am not. You need to tie my tie. I couldn't do it properly." Kiaan said pointing to his unruly tie.
"As always." She responded undoing his tie.
In just a minute, she was done with his tie as she had a practice of years. No matter how many times she tried to teach him the same, at the end it was her who had to tie it for him even if it required Kiaan visiting her apartment early in the morning before going to the office.
Hand in hand they exited her 3 bedroom apartment and got down to the ground floor for the parking lot where Kiaan's cad was parked.
As usual she sat in the passenger seat and Kiaan took the driver's roaring the car to its life on the busy roads of Delhi. She took her mouth freshener from the dashboard and ate some offering to Kiaan as well who happily ate.
"What was the problem in me wearing Navy blue? It would've definitely gone well with your dress." Kiaan said in between driving.
"Nope. I know it wouldn't have looked good. And we need to look best together as per Mom's instructions." Natasha replied.
"She knows we're coming together?" Kiaan asked.
"Uh huh. She only knows that I am bringing a guy with me as per her request. But I am sure she'll be happy to see you with me." Natasha responded, shrugging her shoulders.
"And what about those cousins of yours? They must be bringing their love interests and here you have me with you." Kiaan said knowing everything.
"She only said to bring a partner. She didn't specify and I have no intentions on getting an idiot of a boyfriend or husband for me." Natasha replied with distaste.
Kiaan only nodded his head in agreement. Both of them always had these same thoughts and beliefs about everything. Neither of them ever had a girlfriend or boyfriend for once seeing everyone else's conditions. They always thought it was best to be alone and enjoyed each other's presence when others did with their love interests.
After a 45 minute drive, they reached the lavish location for the reception. It was very obvious that her relatives had more intentions of showing off their wealth rather than a good and appropriate reception. Natasha's family was also rich, but she knew she wouldn't like something like this. Kiaan was used to this as being a leading businessman, you get invited to a lot of luxurious weddings and functions.
Getting down the car, she was instantly engulfed in a tight hug by a distant aunt making her cringe. She replied to every question and compliment with a fake smile and released a breath of relief when they left.
"Remind me again why I agreed to come here." Natasha pouted.
"Nat, this is nothing and you know it. I suggest we go back from her because once we get in there, you know what all is going to happen." Kiaan said with a known look.
"Damn, you're right. Let's go back." Natasha said with wide eyes taking his hand with hers.
"Natasha beta." A voice stopped both of them.
Turning around they saw it was Natasha's father Sameer Rai standing with a bright smile on his face for his daughter.
"Dad." Natasha said excitedly and hugged him.
"Kiaan beta, how are you?" Sameer Rai asked turning in Kiaan's direction.
"I am good Uncle. Hope everything is good with you?" He politely replied.
"Of course young man." He said and hugged him as well.
They had met in the past many times as Kiaan and Natasha spend their time together as much as possible. Both of them had good thoughts about each other and Kiaan's father was a good business associate of Sameer Rai as well.
"And where you running again?" Her father asked Natasha.
"As usual." Kiaan replied with a mischievous smile.
"Daaadddd. It was his idea." Natasha huffed and Kiaan just raised his hands in surrender.
Sameer Rai just chuckled at their antics. He very well knew about the bond between these two. It was a normal sight for them to watch bickering and hugging the next moment.
"Your Mom is waiting for you Natasha. Get inside okay? You need to be present today." Her father said softly.
Natasha had a comparatively good bond with her father whereas it was a complicated with her mother. Her mother always pesters about things which should happen according to her which Natasha despises. She always likes to do whatever she likes and no one should direct her about anything according to her.
"Just stay by my side please?" Natasha asked Kiaan cutely who chuckled.
"Of course Cutie Patootie." Kiaan said her nickname hugging her tightly which Natasha responded immediately.
"Come." With this they went in the direction of entrance, hand in hand smiling at everyone who looked at them on the way.
The whole venue of reception was decorated at its best. It was looking so beautiful and amazing with the exquisite and expensive things.
Natasha gulped seeing all her relatives spread across the whole venue. It already had thousands of guests turning her face in distaste.
"Is it too late?" Natasha asked gulping in Kiaan's direction.
"Yes, darling." Kiaan replied in a fake accent making Natasha cringe.
As they started going in her Mom's direction, they got blocked by a bunch of her crazy cousins.
"Hello Natasha. I thought you're going to skip the reception as well considering you didn't even bother to attend other functions." Her cousin, Alia commented.
"There's no way I would've skipped the reception Alia." Natasha replied with a fake smile.
"And you know I am a busy person unlike you. I need to earn my own money by working where you get everything by your father's credit card." She continued in Alia's ear making her glare at her.
"You won't change." Alia said with a glare.
"Just like you sweetheart." Natasha replied flicking her fingers.
With this Alia and her boyfriend who seemed total opposite of her went away from the group of cousins.
"Nattu." She heard someone call and she groaned in response. The worst nickname she ever heard of.
It was her only brother Nakul Rai, a 29 year old married man who acts even more childish than her.
"Bhai." She said this time with a genuine smile.
His brother had his 2 year old son in his arms who was busy with his ice-cream, not even bothering to glance at anyone around him.
"Ayush." She called him who instantly lifted his head up listening to his Aunt's voice.
"Nattu." The 2 year old exclaimed forwarding his hands for her to hold him. He loved his Aunt after all.
"See, that's why I tell you to not call me this. You're teaching him wrong things." She cooed taking him.
"He goes after his father. What can I do?" Nakul said shrugging.
Ayush kissed her nose with his pouty lips and Natasha cooed him happily.
Nakul and Kiaan chuckled seeing the scene.
"What? He atleast loves me unlike you both." She huffed kissing his chubby cheeks.
"Ahh, so finally it happened. Everyone give me my money." Her cousin Rohan said looking at Natasha.
"What happened? And what money?" She questioned in confusion.
"You and Kiaan finally got together na. All of us did a bet where I said you both will get together this year whereas they were like in in the next year. So, I won." Rohan responded.
"And who said we are together?" Natasha asked glaring.
"Yoh both just arrived together, hand in hand, looking like a couple. You wore the color he likes on you and he wore the color you like on him. So, this concludes that you both are together." Rohan explained making Natasha frown.
"I told you I should wear Navy blue." Kiaan said looking at Natasha's direction who swatted his hand away.
"This is just a coincidence Rohan. I didn't even select my dress. Mom did. And as always we are-" She got cut off in between.
"Just bestfriends." All her cousins said together in a loud voice.
"Just bestfriends." Natasha and Kiaan said nodding their heads.
After minutes of talks with her cousins and family, she excused herself from them to meet her mother. Looking around the massive location, her gaze finally settled on a group of women where her mother was one of them laughing high-pitched as always.
"Hi ma." She said hugging her mother, not bothering to acknowledge the other ladies standing there.
"Hey sweetie. You finally got the time to meet your mother?" Her mother responded playfully.
"It's not like that ma. The nephews and nieces of yours weren't letting me go." She replied addressing her cousins as her Mom's relatives.
"Everyone, you must already got to know by now that she's my daughter, but still here I present everyone my daughter Natasha Rai." Her mom Anisha Rai said to the group of ladies.
"Hi." She said waving.
"Oh my god."
"She's beautiful."
"She's so pretty."
"Amazing."
"Nice."
She heard everyone comment making her cringe in disbelief, but faked a smile. Why does ladies have to exaggerate every single time?
"She will be perfect for Siddharth." She heard someone say.
"Excuse me? What did you just say?" She questioned with raised eyebrows, her smile long forgotten.
"Sweetie, I was about to tell you. Now that Mrs. Sinha had already picked up this matter, I think it's time." Her mom replied to her.
"Okay?" She responded still in a daze.
"We have fixed your wedding with her son Siddharth Sinha. I know you two are going to be a perfect match." She said smiling.
"What? Mom how can you take such a big decision of my life without even consulting me even once?" She asked, her expression turned horrified.
"But Natasha, if I had ask you, then you would have denied it straightaway. So I took the matter of your wedding in my hands." Her mother responded sweetly as if it is a normal thing.
"Mom you have no right to do this when-" She replied with her voice wavering.
"When?" Her mother questioned.
"When I am already engaged." She blurted and then sighed.
Natasha then noticed Kiaan making his way towards her with his hands fixed in his pants pocket and a smile regular to her.
"Nat, I was finding you since five minutes." He said standing beside her shocked figure.
"What?" Her mother shrieked.
"To whom?" She questioned further.
"To- to- Kiaan." She responded.
"Yeah?" Kiaan questioned beside her making her cringe.
What did she just say?
"Oh my god! I am so happy. Congratulations sweetie. I know he must've proposed you." She said happily making Natasha shock for the second time.
"Y-yes ma." She stuttered forcing a smile.
"You're finally engaged Kiaan beta." Her mother said turning in Kiaan's direction.
"I am engaged?" He said or more like questioned.
"Congratulations both of you. I was waiting for this since so long. We'll conduct the wedding as soon as possible." Her mother said.
Kiaan's expression was full of confusion while Natasha's was of fear. She had no idea why she said Kiaan's name. And now that she has declared this in front of so many people, she could only pray to get buried deep inside a hole away from all this.
"We'll be back." Natasha muttered and took Kiaan's arm moving away from them quickly.
Kiaan was still oblivious to the situation and what he heard moments ago was not settling in his mind properly. Thinking to ask Natasha about the same, he quietly followed her for now.
They had now reached the back of the venue where the swimming pool was situated. At present there was no one here, so it seemed perfect to Natasha that when Kiaan will shout on her about what she did according to his temper, she'll get saved from the embarrassment.
"What was going on back there Nat?" Kiaan broke the eerie silence.
"First promise me you won't get mad at me?" Natasha asked hesitantly.
"Nat, just tell me." He said.
"First promise." Natasha said timidly.
"Okay. I promise." Kiaan said sighing.
"Itoldmomthatweareengagedtoeachother." She blurted.
"I am sorry Nat, but I don't know Chinese." Kiaan said playfully.
"This is serious." Natasha cried.
"Geez, I am sorry. Now tell me what is it Nat?" He asked.
"I told Mom that you're engaged." Natasha said lowering her gaze.
"So what? I'll tell her that I broke off my engagement with my non-existent fiance." Kiaan replied shrugging.
"That girl isn't non-existent. It's me." Natasha replied still with lowered gaze.
"You?" He repeated lifting her chin.
Natasha nodded her head in affirmative and Kiaan sighed in response.
"Why?" He questioned with an emotion she couldn't decipher.
Natasha then explained Kiaan what all happened back there with her mother so that she had to take this step and Kiaan was silent the whole time making Natasha scared. She was sure that Kiaan was seconds away from lashing at her with the short-tempered guy he has always been.
"Okay." She heard Kiaan's voice.
"Okay?" She asked in confusion as if she had heard wrong.
"Don't worry. I'll find a way out of this mess." He said like a mature person.
"Kiaan please listen. I don't know why I said that, but it was all unintentional. I don't even have an idea why I said your name. I am sorry, but please don't hate me for this." Natasha said with great difficulty.
Their friendship had always been the most important part of her life. This was something she treasured as the time they spend together is what she loves and if it's gets ruined by her one mistake then she doesn't have any idea how she'll survive.
"Don't. I know it's not your fault." Kiaan said and Natasha instantly hugged him wrapping her arms around his torso. Kiaan put his chin on the top of her head seeing their height difference and wrapped his arms around her as well.
"What will you do?" Natasha asks after moments of silence.
"I think it's better we inform about this now. Mom and Dad must've arrived by now as well so, I think we should come clean. They are our family, so what could possibly be worse?" Kiaan reasoned.
"You're right. We definitely should." Natasha replied nodding her head.
"Ready?" Kiaan asked gesturing to the back entrance of hall.
"Ready." Natasha breathed out.
Both of them made their ways back in the massive hall side by side. The whole way Natasha's heart was beating loudly in anticipation. Either this is going to go how Kiaan thought or the way she's thinking her mother would react. She could even rekindle Natasha with her friend's son Siddharth Sinha.
Just as they thought, they could see Kiaan and Natasha's parents in a conversation which seemed a nice one. All they knew each other was as their child's bestfriend's parents, but now they are a lot more than that.
"Here is the new couple!" Natasha's mom said acknowledging the two who stood beside their parents side by side.
"You both are so secretive huh? I never got to knew that you both are in love and will soon get married." Kiaan's mom said.
"Mom-" Natasha started but got cut off.
"Congratulations baccho." Natasha's father said smiling at the duo.
"Sameer, we can finally merge our business together now that we have a reason for it." Kiaan's father said to Sameer Rai.
"Dad-" This time Kiaan started, but was again cut off.
"You know Natasha when Mrs. Sinha heard about your engagement, she looked so flabbergasted. Even I was when I heard about this, but I am so happy for you both. You both look so good together." Mrs. Anisha said.
"She definitely is considering the fact that she has already spread this news among the family." Her Dad said chuckling where Anisha just shrugged. She has always been like this regarding everything.
"You what?" Natasha was horrified.
Here they both were planning to come clean about Natasha's mistake and their parents have already did all this.
As Natasha looked in Kiaan's direction, his face was blank. Neither a look of annoyance towards the situation nor a look of anger towards her. Natasha's mind was in a haze thinking what she should say to their parents listening to the words they said moments ago.
"So, have you both planned anything about the wedding or we, your mothers will have to do?" His mother asked with a hopeful expression.
"Of course we haven't." Natasha replied instantly.
Hell, it was the first time she thought about 'her' wedding planning that too with Kiaan.
"No problem, we will plan everything. You just enjoy your wedding which will be conducted a week from now." Her mom said.
"1 week?" Natasha asked with eyes wide open.
"Yeah, we want to arrange everything as soon as possible and a week is the perfect time." His father said.
"Kiaan-" This time she turned his direction for help.
"A week is perfect. And yes mom, you can decide and plan everything with Nat's mom. We don't need anything particular." Came Kiaan's voice for the first time after so long.
"Kiaan?" Natasha asked with mouth agape, shock taking over everything.
"Yes Nat?" Kiaan questioned turning in her direction looking normal as ever.
"Do you have any idea about what you're saying? There are talking about our f*cking wedding. Do you know what that means? We both, as husband and wife." Natasha hissed in his ear pointing at both of them with her slender finger.
"I know Nat. We're engaged so we are going to get married soon." Kiaan replied with a voice their parents could hear.
"That's right baccho. Get ready for you wedding." Her father declared happily.
"Excuse us please." Natasha said smiling at the other four.
"You don't need to be so formal with us for talking to your fiance Natasha." Her mom said making the other three laugh.
"Sure mom." With this she dragged the 6'1 man that is her bestfriend, now also her fiance to the entrance of the hall only to exit.
