Chapter Two -
Todays the day I leave this home for a while. I pick up my box filled with books and school uniforms and bring it down to where the rest of the boxes where. By rest I mean one other that had the rest of my books and spare clothes. As I reach the bottom of my stairs, I hear gran sit down in her chair. Her rocking chair is on a really creaky floor board so you can tell if she’s in it or not. As I walk into the hallway towards the front entrance. My box was still there. But the tape changed. Instead of the one layer there was 2. Odd. Maybe I just taped it down twice by accident. Meh. I place both the boxes in to my aunties car, she was driving me to the train station.
As we arrive I thank my auntie and get out of the car. She helps me take one of the boxes to the train where she places it on a seat next to where I sat. “Stay safe ****” She says
“Its Shelby now Auntie.” I murmur
“Oh, my apologies deary, Stay safe Shelby. I love you” She fixes her mistake and kisses my forehead before getting of the train.
The train ride was similar to yesterday, with the others getting on half way. This time we spoke about the dorm system. Me fwhip and Gem didn’t mind it, but sausage said he hated it. His reasoning… “I miss her already!!” sausage wines
“Bubbles will be fine with mum lil bro” Fwhip says with a sigh.
“I’m sorry, but um, who’s bubbles?” I ask
“Sausages dog, Mum got her for him for his 14th birthday.” Gem murmurs looking up from her book. I chuckle. I’ve never had a pet before…
As we arrive at the front gate we are given our keys and a map of the door system. We where also given some trollies to put our stuff in. I am in room 42 of block A. I begin to make my way there. When I arrive I look around the front entrance, I forgot how rich this place is. Having enough money to build hole blocks with separate outsides. I will plant flowers and mushrooms out her, no matter what. I take my key out my back pocket and insert it into the lock. As I turn it I begin to think. What if my room mate is a bitch. What if it was… one of the kids who bullied me last year. No. I will be fine. I take a deep breath in and enter the dorm. “Oh! Shelby!!” Gem yells “Nice to know we share a dorm” I let out a sigh of relief, “oh thank god I know you” I laugh.
“Your rooms the one to the left” gem says smiling.
“Thanks Gem.” I reply. I pick up the boxes and place them on the floor to the left of the door. I quickly take the trolly to the pick up zone and head back to the dorms. I enter my room with the box with only one layer of tape. I place that on the floor again to the left of my bedroom doorway. Then return with the box with double tape. I take the box knife that Gem gave me and cut open the take. I start to take out the books and place them on my shelves. They where colour organized and faded into a rainbow. It may have been a dull one, but still a rainbow. I smile as I turn to the box, only having clothes left in it. I hate doing laundry… I take the shirts and open a draw under my bed, placing them one by one on top of each other.
About 10 minutes later and moving the positions 300 times I finally settled on a place for my clothes. Well, out of school clothes. Next was my uniform. And the other books. Ugh. This is gunna be a long day. I grab the box cutter which I left on my shelves. Cutting through the two layers of tape I open the box. Inside there was a note. I don’t remember leaving this here… I pick the note up and begin to read it
Shelby my dearest granddaughter,
I wanted you to have this. I know I haven’t been the best lately but I still love you and wish to be better for you
- Love Gran Gran
What…? I begin to shuffle through the box, stacking books next to me as I do. I near the bottom a blue fabric in a zip lock bag. I pull it out of the box and inspect the bag. Its folded, I can tell. The faint reflection of more colours loom within. I carefully pull open the zipper, the sound of the seal breaking echoes across the walls. As the zipper hit the end of the packet, I began to pull the fabric out. It was a smooth silk. The rectangular blue sheet slid out smother then ice falling down the side of a mounting (A/N it’s a satisfying image). I begin to unfold the silk, revealing the pink and white stripes on the fabric. I dropped the flag as tears streamed down the corners of my eyes. The shiny letters of my name centred on the pride flag. All this time I thought Gran didn't.... I feel a soft smile form on my cheeks. Wait... where can I put this...? I look around the walls of my room. I look over my bed. A blank wall space loomed over it. Perfect. I wipe the tears from my eyes and get up off the floor. I walk towards my door and turn the handle. I look over to the front area of the dorm. Gem was on the sofa, still reading her book. "Hey Gem, do you know if we're aloud to pin stuff to the walls?" I ask walking over to her. "We are. If you need pins, there's a box of them on the kitchen island." She says looking up from her book briefly. "Thanks!" I say walking over to said island. I pick up the box and take four pins from inside. I begin to walk back to my dorm. Once again closing the door behind me as I enter. I pick up the flag and pin it to my wall. I step down from my bed trying not to trip and I smile. I smile at the flag; I smile at my name, and I smile to my Gran. I feel like she knows I'm happy. Even if I'm not with her right now. I hear a soft knocking on my door. I walk over to it and pull on the handle. "Hey, Shelby." Gem says with her usual warm tone "so, seeing as we have no lessons till Wednesday, wanna go to the Café around here?"
"Sure!" I say "when abouts?"
"Um.... whenever your ready?" She replies with a smile.
"Alright! I'll just finish with my books and I'll be out" I respond smiling back at her. "See you in a sec then!" Gem responds walking away. I close my door and go back to organising.
