Piloting

An argument did take place, when Rocket assigned Charlotte to a ship that wasn't the Milano.

"Charlotte," Rocket snapped.

"Rocket," Charlotte said in the same tone, "That's my ship, let me pilot it."

"If you don't get in your assigned ship, I will crash the Milano," Rocket said, as threatening the precious ship was the single way to get her to stop.

Charlotte pouted and trudged to her assigned ship. She clambered up to hatch, wiggling into the pilot's seat. Her right hand wrapped around the gear shift; her left hand hovered over the trigger of the main gun.

"Ready when you are, Rocket," Charlie said into the earpiece.

"Yondu! Open the hatch."

Charlotte flipped on the engine.

"Five.. Four.. Three.. Two.. One."

Charlotte's stomach filled with butterflies as her plane dropped. She waited until there were no other planes around to pull up on the shift. She fell into the line in between Rocket and Peter.

Yondu ordered the biggest planes to shoot at Dark Astor.

Charlotte watched in amazement as two fiery red blasts zoomed through the air. They hit the force field, creating a cover.

Charlotte followed behind the Milano to the underbelly of the Dark Astor. She maneuvered her ship to hover before she put all of her attention on aiming correctly and firing wildly at the specific part of the ship.

After minutes of rapid shooting, a hole was finally made.

"Babe! Go ahead," Charlie called.

She pulled away from her position and started soaring through the air.

Thousands of Ronan's own aircraft were being released.

Charlotte took a deep breath to calm herself. She thought of her friends and Peter, remembering that they were giving her something to fight for.

With a shake of her head, she threw the gear forward and started firing at the dark vessels.

She dodged exploding ships throughout the air, her eyes keeping a look out for Peter's ship.

Charlotte spotted it and shot down the surrounding aircraft's, leaving him with free air to fly through.

Through the window, he gave her a quick thumbs up before taking off.

"Quill! I've been hit! No more games, boy. I'll see you when this is all over."

Charlotte gritted her teeth. Killing people wasn't her thing, however, if it was Yondu, she wouldn't exactly be upset.

"There's too many of them! We'll never make it!" Gamora shouted.

Charlotte opened her mouth to tell them she would clear the air, but she closed it, her eyes catching the sight of something spectacular.

Formed like stars in the night sky, yellow and blue Nova Corps ships joined the fight.

"Nova Corps!" Charlotte gleefully exclaimed, "We might actually have a chance now!"

"Honey, they got my dick message!" Peter joyfully shouted back.

Charlie let out a puff of air, shaking her head. That would have to be added to the list of things Peter shouldn't have voiced.

With the help of Nova's ships, Peter crash landed into the Dark Astor. From the sounds of it, Drax was having a great time, maniacally laughing through the earpiece.

Smiling, Charlotte occupied herself with fighting the aircraft's around her. It took her mind off of Peter for the time being.

"Quill!"

"What?" Peter responded.

"No, the other Quill!" Rocket clarified.

Charlie's eyebrows came closer together, "Do you mean me?"

"Yeah, look, ships are chasing me. I'm gonna fly at you!"

Confused, Charlie shook her head, but lifted up the front of her ship. The Milano was flying straight towards her, four ships behind it.

Charlotte squealed as she heard the bottom of the Milano scratch the surface of her ship.

With Rocket in the clear, she held down the trigger and blasted the ships in half.

"Hey, Peter?" Charlie asked.

"Star-Lord," Another voice growled at the same time.

"Finally," Peter breathed.

Their conversation was followed by a series of grunts. Charlie held off on her comment.

The Dark Astor was moving closer to the ground.

The Nova ships started to form a blockade.

Charlotte cringed as the Astor started pushing back against them.

"Peter! You have to hurry this up!" she yelled.

"Gamora hasn't opened the doors yet!" Peter shouted.

Dark streaks fell from the bottom of Ronan's ship, exploding upon contact with the ground.

"Rocket!" she shouted, "You seeing this?"

The raccoon was practically in charge of air support; he needed to make a fast call.

"Shoot them before they hit the ground!" Rocket ordered.

Charlotte zoomed down to the ground and put the nose of the ship to the sky. She shot every bomb in her general area. Impressively, none hit the ground.

A purple spark shot through the front of the Dark Astor. Moments later, the blockade began disintegrating.

The infinity gem was purple, the explosion on Knowhere was purple. It didn't take long to figure it was Ronan's doing.

Charlotte's hands roughly pounded against the dashboard, a strangled cry coming from her throat.

"What? What! What's wrong, Charlie?!"

It was Peter, but Charlie couldn't speak to him.

She would never understand how Ronan could kill without feeling any remorse. Those people had families praying about their safety, and it was the last thing he cared about.

"Charlie," Rocket whispered.

She figured they were on their own line.

"I'm gonna kill him," Charlie sniffled.

"Listen to me," Rocket said sternly, "You have to understand that there are still people who are living. We fight for them. We fight to keep the living alive. Do not focus on the dead-- you can't bring them back. But you can try your hardest to save the living, and that's what we're going to do. Are you with me?"

Charlie steadied her breathing. She wiped the tears from her cheeks and nodded to herself. Fight to protect the living.

"I'm with you."

"Good, now I'm bringing the ship under yours. You've gotta jump down into mine," Rocket demanded.

Charlie unhooked herself from the seat and pushed open the hatch.

Rocket parked the Milano just under her, the roof of the cockpit open.

"Here goes nothing," Charlie muttered.

She leaped from her ship, landing on the top of the Milano. Rocking a little from the harsh wind, she fought to stand up. She carefully walked to the hatch and climbed down, pulling the cockpit closed as she did.

Charlie silently strapped herself into her familiar seat. She flipped on her shooter, relieving Rocket from handling the two guns on the ship.

She glanced over to him when they didn't budge.

"I'm fine. Don't worry about me," she said, giving him a small smile.

"Okay. Now, I've got another bat-shit crazy plan," Rocket announced, "You up for it?"

Charlie let an actual grin take over her face, "Of course I am."
