Love and Impostors

[[ LOCATION: Polus ]]

*Ping!*

The phone again. How this place had reception, it'd never be understood. Polus was so remote, but it had just enough for Player to receive some messages. He went over to take a seat at the meeting table, a bit tired from going out into the snow previously.

He pulled it from his pocket, looking to see what it was. Whoever it was had been blowing up his phone.

Girlfriend, right.

"hey, im done. we're through," the text read. "you dont pay attention to me and we never spend enough time together. ur not good for me, goodbye." More texts to this effect followed.

Before he could put his hands to reply to her, the phone notified him that he was unable to reply. She'd already blocked him.

It'd been a few years with her, many happy days and gifts. She had decided to break up with him while he was on another mission in Polus.

Player stared at his phone, its light reflecting in his visor. He turned it off and set it on the meeting table, putting his head in his hands. A shaky sigh escaped from him.

It felt like both an eternity and a few second before he heard footsteps approaching. Snapping his head up, he looked up to a familiar suit of his best friend, Veteran.

"Hey, dude, what's wrong?" Veteran asked, an odd gentleness to his voice.

Player stared up at his friend before looking away,"It's... It's nothing to worry about, Veteran."

Veteran shook his head, putting a gentle hand onto Player, causing Player to flinch lightly.

"Player, I know you better than that, and you know you're not good at lying to me. What's wrong?"

Player audibly took a shaky breath. "Uh... yeah, a breakup happened.." His voice carried his upset feelings clearer than his words.

Veteran sighed. "Player... It's okay." He stepped forward, hugging Player," But don't hold those thoughts in. If you need to let out emotion, I'm right here.."

"What am I missing here?" A third voice came from the other side of the room.

Player and Veteran's gazes snapped to the location, seeing Captain.

"What're we all doing here? We've gotta, yknow, catch the impostors," Captain said, directing a glare in Veteran's direction.

"Could you give us a moment here? Player's dealing with something right now." Veteran growled.

"Oh yeah? Well he's *my* bestie, shouldn't I be comforting him?" Captain retorted.

Veteran released Player from his grasp, walking in Captain's direction. "Then why weren't you here five minutes ago?"

"Excuse me? I was doing my tasks, that's why!" Captain stepped forward in an attempt to reach where Player was sitting. Veteran stood in front of him.

Veteran grabbed Captain's shirt, holding a tight grasp. "Listen, pal, I don't know why you keep insistin' that Player is your best friend, but he's not. He's *MY* best friend and I'm trying to comfort him from a breakup, you got it?"

Captain raised up his arm. Veteran's bracelet jingled on his arm,"You sure about that?"

Veteran growled, an Impostor's mouth showing as he pushed Captain to the ground, hovering over him. "Keep this up and you're gonna get thrown into the Core."

Captain growled back, his own Impostor mouth showing as he grabbed Veteran with tendrils. "You say that as if I didn't know you were one too."

Player sighed, turning and putting his head down on the meeting table. He was too tired and upset for this.
