Chapter 8 - "Who Are You?"
*Paisley's POV*
We stood in the room for such a long time, not wanting to say anything. There were five of us in there (Peyton, mum, Maria, the doctor, and me), but none of us wanted to say anything. Finally, the doctor broke the silence.
"Miss Peyton, I am Dr. Grabb, and this is your family. Do you recognize them?" He wondered. Peyton said nothing; she only looked at us.
"Peyton, it's me.. Paisley," I introduced myself.
"No!" She exclaimed, "you're only..." She pulled out her hands and counted on her fingers before speaking again, "you're only six years old! Paisley is not that tall! Who are you, really?"
"I am Paisley, Peyton. This is the year 2016," I tried to explain.
"No it's not!" She said in a kiddish voice, "it's 2006. Paisley is six. You're not six."
"You're right. I'm not six. I'm sixteen," I looked at her seriously. She looked back at me and frowned.
"I'm confused," she sighed. I hated seeing her like this. I heard mum behind me crying.
"Why is that woman crying?" She pointed to mum behind Maria and me. Mum cried harder.
"Peyton, that's our mum. It's Linda," I told her, bringing mum closer to Peyton.
"She looks a little older," Peyton seemed unsure of mum, even. Then, she asked about Maria, "you look a little like my best friend."
"That's because I am," Maria smiled, walking towards Peyton. She still didn't seem sure of any of us.
"If you are all here, where is dad?" She wondered. I knew that question was coming.
"Peyt," I decided to handle it because I knew mum wouldn't be able to, "dad died when you were ten, you're nineteen now. It's 2016, not 2006. You were in a car accident and lost your memory of the past ten years of your life. I know you can't remember anything that has happened, but I want you to understand that it is no longer 2006. It's 2016.."
Mum got out her wallet and took out all of the pictures she had of Peyton or me. She handed them to me to show Peyton.
"Look here," I showed her, "this is you at ten, then eleven, thirteen, sixteen, eighteen, and you just a few months ago, at nineteen. Now here's me at six, seven, ten, eleven, thirteen, and now at sixteen. I am Paisley. I'm just ten years older than what you remember me."
"Oh," she nodded, "so dad isn't here?"
"No, Peyton. He was in an accident like you were. He died, when you were ten and I was seven. That was nine years ago now. Dad isn't here anymore."
"Okay," she looked down at her body that was lying on the bed.
"Am I really this tall?" She asked, moving her legs around underneath the covers.
"Yes, Peyt. You're nineteen now, and that is ten years older than what you remember you being," I explained. She nodded.
"I'm really tall," she giggled a little.
"Paisley, did you say anything to Luke?" Maria asked me.
"I texted him, but he might've been on the plane. He will come when he gets here. I didn't tell him exactly what was going on because I wasn't quite sure yet."
"Okay. I wonder what he'll say when she doesn't remember him," Maria frowned.
"She might remember him. She met him for the first time ever in-" I stopped to think, and I sighed, "2010."
"She won't remember him.. That's only six years ago," Maria held her head in her hands.
The doctor walked back into the room, and we began to ask him many questions.
"When do you think she'll get her memory back?" Mum asked, trying not to cry.
"Hopefully she will, but she might not. If she does, it will be at least two weeks, up to six months at the most.. To speed up the process, I would surround her with familiar items. I hope for you that she does get her memory back soon," he answered.
"Will we be able to take her home any time soon?" I wondered.
"I'm really not sure, and I don't want to promise you anything. I'm very sorry," Dr. Grabb apologized.
"That's okay," I smiled.
"Just remember to tell her lots of things that have happened in the past ten years. Hopefully she'll soon grasp the concept and be able to realize that she doesn't remember a lot of things," he sighed. Like the fact that she doesn't remember Luke, and he'll be super crushed.
"We'll be sure to do that," mum nodded.
I got a text, and I looked to see that it was from Luke. He had sent me, "I'll be there soon..."
I didn't know if I was ready to explain to Luke what had happened. I knew she wouldn't remember him, and that was about three years of their relationship down the drain.
About ten minutes later, I heard someone running in the hallway. The feet approached the door to Peyton's room and, soon, the door opened. Luke walked in, and he walked over to Peyton.
"Peyton, baby, are you okay?" He asked her, crying. He sniffled and placed his hand on hers as she looked at him confusedly.
She pulled her hand away, "Who are you?"
