Chapter 5 - Yellow Hill

The next morning, after spending a few hours awake at Maria's house, I called my mum and told her I'd be coming home.

"I'll text you later," I promised Maria, "I'll come over with Luke sometime later this week."

"Okay. Love you," she smiled, hugging me. I turned from her and walked out of her room after saying goodbye once more.

I walked down the stairs and before leaving out of the front of her house, I said goodbye to her mum.

"Goodbye, Peyton! Drive safely!" She smiled and waved.

"I will," I replied, "bye!" I waved back and walked out of their front door. I held my keys in my right hand and walked towards my car that was parked in the driveway.

After getting into my car, I sighed and made sure that I had everything I'd taken. Once I was sure I had everything (or at least almost everything; I knew Maria would be returning something later), I pulled out of the driveway.

The distance between my house and Maria's house wasn't very far. It was at least two miles, but not much more than that. About a mile away from her house and a mile away from mine, there was a big hill. It was pretty steep, but it was usually easy to get over.

I was driving towards the hill, knowing I'd be going a little slower while traveling up the hill. All of a sudden, a car popped up out of nowhere over the hill.

It must've been going at least seventy miles an hour, while it was only a forty-five mile zone. I was amazed that no cops had given the man driving the car a ticket because there were usually cops around that area.

The driver of the car was obviously drunk. He was all over the road. He'd swerve onto my side for a second, then back to his. He would almost drive off of the road. But he was going so fast that I didn't even see him coming towards me.

The car was small, and it was red. I knew that sometime that he would crash into someone, even though I prayed it not happen. I didn't think a car that was as small as the one he was driving could do very much damage, but it did indeed.

The car swerved left, then right, and soon, he was coming towards me. I barely saw it speeding right at me until it hit the front of the car. I hardly felt the airbag puff out before I was unconscious.

*Linda's POV* (Peyton's mum)

It had been a little over seven minutes since Peyton told me she was leaving Maria's. I knew it took less than five minutes to drive home. Maybe she'd left later than she told me. I shrugged as I picked up the phone to call Denise to see if everything was alright.

"Hello, Denise!" I exclaimed when I picked up the phone to talk to Maria's mum, "I was wondering, when did Peyton leave your house? She's not home yet, and I wasn't sure."

"She left about five minutes ago, she usually tells you when she'll be home."

"She did, and she'd texted me and told me she'd be home soon. She's not here yet, though, and that worried me. It always worries me, you know, how we lost Daniel in that accident nine years ago," I stopped myself from crying.

"She'll probably be home soon, don't be too worried," Denise assured me, and I thanked her before hanging up.

I walked into the living room where I had the news playing on the television. I sat down to wait for Peyton to come home so I could make sure she was safe.

"This just in: a teenage girl has been hit on Yellow Hill by a mid-twenties man driving under the influence. The man has not been hurt, however, the girl has been taken to Sydney Hospital in the back of an ambulance due to injuries to the head and other injuries that have not yet been released to the public. This girl's identity has just been found on her driver's license. Her name is Peyton Gray, from the Northwest part of Sydney. Her family has been tried to be contacted, but has not yet been reached," the tv anchor announced, showing some pictures of the accident. I had no idea what happened. That was my little girl there, in that car that was hit by the drunk driver who was perfectly fine.

"Paisley!" I yelled upstairs, and she came running down the stairs towards me with her jacket, "I heard some of what you were listening to. Let's go."

I nodded, and I grabbed my coat and my keys. I rushed out of the house, just thinking about my Peyton and if she was alright.
