Chapter 13

You raced after the brown mouse and duckling as quickly as possible. You didn't want to lose sight of them in the terribly tall grass. Nibbles, however, couldn't run very fast with his time little legs. You picked him up in your arms so he wouldn't fall behind. The small mouse helped you keep track of the various turns along the way. Soon, you were finally out of the jungle of weeds. You were completely out of breath, but Quacker and Jerry continued to run off. Without any break, you continued to run after the duo to the barn.

Quacker suddenly pulled Jerry into a small hole in the barn's red wall. You were completely out of breath at this point. You trudged into the small entrance and immediately felt a relaxing cold draft hit your fur. The duckling and mouse were already inside. Quacker would shove different object in front of the confused brown mouse, asking for him to remember. Of course, Jerry only replied with a shake of the head and a dismayed frown. You set Nibbles down so he could see his Uncle, and you began to do a little sightseeing.

You appeared to be inside Jerry's country-style house. A bed had been made out of an old sardine can, a small but thick cloth, and pillow that was probably made for a doll. A thread spool sat beside the bed as a small table, and a lamp was perched on top. Around you were various pictures of Jerry's many travels. He's been to the coast, New York City, and in various other small communities. There were family photos as well, and cute little Nibbles was posing in most of them. You also found a picture of Toots, but you decided to flip it towards the wall.

Overall, it was a nice comfy place to stay for a mouse of vacation. If you ever had the time, you would love to build your own home away from home. Although, you had no idea when you would ever have the time to do that. You were one of the best doctors within the city, and you had been taking care of your fellow rodents for such a long time. It was what you lived for. You began thinking of the hospital and wondered if they were getting along without you.

You were pulled away from your thoughts when you felt a small tug on your hand. Nibbles was bringing you back to reality. His sad face reminded you of your current problem. You squatted down to his height so you could listen to the young mouse.

"Uncle Jerry still doesn't remember anything, Miss (Y/N)," Nibbles sadly stated. You were afraid tears would flow from his eyes. "When will he start to remember again?"

You didn't know what to say. You didn't want to make a promise that you couldn't keep. You bit your lip in hesitation. "We'll get his memory back, don't worry."

Nibbles didn't like your vague answer. His sad frown only grew larger before he needed a comforting hug. He threw his arms around your neck. You rubbed his back as he silently cried into your shoulder. You couldn't think of anything else to do but pick of the small child into your arms. You whispered encouraging words to him, hoping to calm him down.

You looked up at the mouse and duckling once again. Quacker still didn't want to believe that his friend couldn't remember. He was searching through every drawer for something...anything to jog the mouse's memories. Jerry, however, was staring at you and Nibbles, a frown present on his face. He was trying his best to remember, he truly was. However, his memories remained foggy and blurred. He felt like everything was his fault; he was the reason everyone around him wanted to shed tears. His thoughts were visible in his frown, and you couldn't bare to see him like that.

You grabbed the mouse's attention with a happy smile. You wanted to give him hope. He couldn't give up now, you had barely started your journey and he was already losing faith. When Jerry saw your smile, though, it was contagious. His frown disappeared a little, and the end twisted upwards. You walked up to the mouse with Nibbles still in your arms. With your free hand, you interlocked your fingers his Jerry's. You gave him a gently, reassuring squeeze in order to raise his spirits.

"We'll keep trying, Jerry," you said quietly. "There has to be someway to restore your memories, I'm sure of it."

Jerry's smile grew a little brighter at your words. You just needed to hold onto your faith. Quaker, however, seemed to lose all of his belief. There was nothing else that would help Jerry remember their adventures together. The little duckling wiped some tears away with his feathers. You didn't want him to give up either, there had to be something else that could help.

"What did you and Jerry do for fun, Quaker?" you asked the duckling.

"W-Well," the duckling began, "We would always go swimming together. Jerry taught me to swim, ya know."

"Swimming?" young Nibbles asked. He rose his head from your shoulder. "Can we go swimming? Please, Uncle Jerry?"

Jerry couldn't say no to the cute little mouse. However, he still looked at you to make sure you were okay with the plan. You were beaming with joy, happy to see Nibbles a little better. Plus, it had been a long time since you got a chance to be in the water.

"Sounds like a great idea to me!!" you said happily. "We could all use a little fun right about now, anyways!"

And that's exactly what you did. While it didn't necessarily help Jerry with his memories, it was still fun all the same. The three boys splashed each other in the water while you stayed on the sand for a little break. You thought it would be a great time to get some sun on your skin, er fur. But when Jerry splashed some cold water on you, you had to get your revenge and joined in the party. It was a great way to spend the day.
