middle school
My first year of adolescence started out as a normal thirteen year old monster does. My mind was filled with trends, what everyone was into these days, becoming independent, discovering who I am, and most importantly, fitting in.
In middle school, I was a very well-known student. I wasn't popular but I wasn't a loner either and I was happy with that. But I longed to find out if I do fit in with the others.
I had a decent amount of friends but they already had their own place they belonged to. I was mostly considered to be an extra, the only background character in a story. It wasn't until later during one of my classes when I found out I was considered as the oddball of the school just by overhearing a conversation between a group of friends. That day, I began to think I must have at least one thing in common with the rest of the school to fit in and no longer be called an oddball.
"Mom, dad," I announced during dinner, "so, there's going to be a dance at school."
Dad looked up immediately from reading the mail.
"Someone asked you to the dance?"
"No, it's not that. It's just that... Well, everyone is beginning to wear these awesome heavy silver chain bracelets. It's a new trend and I believe if I have one, I will be asked to the dance before I know it. And maybe even fit in at school. So what do you think, mom and dad?"
Dad just stared at me silently then looked at mom who had her eyes on me. Her eyes seemed like she felt bad for me.
"Well, Amimi," mom finally spoke after ten seconds of silence, "I believe any boy will ask you to the dance if you just keep on being yourself and not follow such a popular trend."
I looked at my mom in shock before I spoke.
"But mom, that's the problem. Everyone at school thinks I'm an oddball because I don't fit in with anyone at all. What you and dad call unique, it's called different at school. So maybe, just maybe, if I were to get just a harmless chain bracelet everyone is getting, I will be able to fit in."
Dad looked back at his mail, "I'm sorry, Amimi, but I think you just have to find another way to have someone to ask you. I know what bracelet you're talking about and I don't like how the price looks like."
"Your dad is right, Amimi. Just be yourself." Mom added.
The conversation led to a disagreement. Then that disagreement led to an argument until I stood up and stomped away into my room.
"You guys are so unbelievable. All I ever wanted was to fit in at school. Is it too much to ask?" I said as I made my way inside and slammed the door.
The next day at school was hard. Everywhere I went, I always heard a lot of monsters announcing to their friend or friends who asked who, when and how. I tried not to listen but it was as if everyone wanted to rub it all over my face.
"I just can't wait for school to end," I mumbled as I walked to my locker. Just when I opened the metal door, a little piece of paper flew out and landed next to my right shoe.
"Hmm, I don't remember putting this inside," I said while kneeling down to pick up the folded paper. Out of curiosity, I opened it and inside was a little note:
Sugar is sweet,
Lemons are sour.
I've been thinking of this the whole entire hour.
Now I have the guts to write it down,
Will you be my dance date, and maybe even win the crown?
-Cosmic
I couldn't believe it, Cosmic, the most beautiful boy at school, actually wanted me to be his date. I felt so happy, so overjoyed. I folded the note again, closed my locker, and ran outside to where I usually see Cosmic stand around with a couple of his friends.
"Cosmic," I waved to get his attention ,"hi!" But he didn't wave back or even looked at me. It was as if he ignored me.
I just dismissed it and began my way to his direction.
"Hey, Cosmic." I said when I stood in front of him. "I got your note in my locker and I'm so happy you asked me. My answer is yes, I will go to the dance with you." I smiled kindly at him.
But Cosmic just tilted his head in confusion, "what are you talking about? Your locker isn't 191."
"Um, no. My locker number is 193. This was in my locker when I opened it. See?" I handed Cosmic the folded note.
"Oh man, I'm so sorry but this note is meant for another person. I must have put it in your locker by mistake. I hope you understand, uh... What's your name?" Cosmic said after reading his note.
I just turned and walked away. I didn't want anyone to see the black ink tears flowing down my face. I hid inside the bathroom until the bell rung for the end of the day.
I didn't want to walk home this time so I called my mom and asked her to pick me up.
"Sure, honey. Besides, you have an appointment for your eyes. I've noticed you have been having some trouble seeing things so I thought you might want that checked out." She said.
I smiled and hid my teary voice, "t-thanks, mom."
"Anytime, Amimi." I swear I could hear my mom's smile before she hung up.
