Lost Love

A/N: this isn't really a headcanon. Today I lost my cat, Pumpkin. I live in the country so it's most likely he was eaten by coyotes that were passing through last night. I just need to vent my sadness now m

America was 17 in human years when he first fell in love. She was beautiful, absolutely stunning, to him.

She lived in a small settlers town in the east, working at a cafe. He was supposed to be passing through when he stopped in to get a bite to eat. But after he saw her... He couldn't help but want to stay longer.

Her red hair seemed to be like actual fire from her head to her lower back. And green eyes that shone like emeralds in the moonlight. Her attitude and fighting spirit matched her appearance as well; always standing up for what she believed in and not afraid to fight against a powerful force. She was the definition of perfection to America.

He stayed there for a few weeks, successfully getting to court the girl. It was like a dream come true for him. Romantic walks through a meadow, bouquets of wildflowers every other day, handwritten love letters... It was amazing and America felt like he was floating with the clouds.

But all good things must come to an end...

America was with some of the townsmen hunting one night. He could hear the howls of wolves in the distance but the men calmed him by saying they'd be safe with the campfire. But America wasn't concerned about himself.

His sweetheart had the bad habit of walking outside at night when he wasn't there. She said it made her feel like he was there with her, looking up at the same moon he was under. He laughed a bit at her and told her he'd always be with her. Oh if only he had made her promise to stay indoors for him...

When he and the other men had gotten back to the town, everyone was in mourning clothes. America felt his blood run cold.

And his worries proved true... That night she had been walking by the lake when the wolves came through. They wouldn't have even been able to identify her if it hadn't been for the golden locket America gave her. Some people tried to comfort him, but he just shook his head and ran out of the town, a trail of tears following after him.

America went into the woods, to their special place, and cried. He spent days there just crying. He screamed until his voice went out. He laid on the ground so long he couldn't feel his body anymore. But he knew that no matter what, she was gone.

For so long afterwards, the whether was terrible. Storm after storm terrorized the new world. The people said it was a sign from God, that the people were sinning too much and needed to change their ways. If only they knew that the whether was simply the fact that their country was suffering from a broken heart.
