56. Never-ending pools of watering eyes.
Remember all that talk just a few minutes ago about me being able to take over the world and face the devil himself if I had to, and everything would be fine just because Logan had taken my hand on his and winked at me and because of that, all was gonna be good in the world again because we would take it on together etcetera etcetera?
Well, forget all that.
All of that flew right out of the window.
The moment I locked eyes with Suzy's still crazed and bloodshot eyes, my legs lost all the strength I thought they had. My heartbeat spiked right back up and stabbed at my chest like the way the end of an arrow would stab at a surface, and it hurt.
As if he could feel how powerless I had become, Logan squeezed my hand and hold me tighter. He didn't have to turn to look at me, but I understood he meant to be my shield if he had to.
I thanked him for that. Really. Silently, but I was thankful. But you see the thing is, even though he was there morally and all, he couldn't really do much about the turmoil with me. That's how it is. Your friends can be there to help you face your worst, but when the time actually comes, you will have to walk the rest yourself. That problem was between me and Suzy. Our friendship was on the spiking rocks and only the two of us had the power to take it out of there.
"Okay, let's get this thing going." Logan pulled out a chair next to Leo and gestured for me to sit. If you looked at it without giving a thought, you would think nothing of it. But apparently, the moment we walked in, Logan had already thought of a strategic seating plan.
Here's how he did it.
Where he sat me, he made sure I was one seat away from Suzy, separated by Leo between us. Where he sat, he made sure he was next to me, effectively separating me and Luke using himself. I guess he trusted me to sit close to Leo but not to Luke. Luke and Suzy were left having to seat next to each other whether they wanted to or not. And to be honest, I don't think he gave a damn about it. They could crawl each other's face off for all he cared.
"Now that we are all here." He cleared his throat. "What the fuck is going on?"
Nobody answered.
Suzy crossed her arms against her chest and pulled her lips to the side in a sneer.
Luke slumped his back on his seat, one arm on top of the table, and almost absently, started to tap his fingers on the said table.
Logan raised his eyebrows as if asking 'Really? Nobody has anything to say?' and looked at all of us in turn, and Leo.
Well, Leo finally broke the silence, and boy did he break it with the bang!
"Since nobody here seems to want to start, I will." He crossed both his hands on the table. "Here's what I know so far. You two." He gestured between Suzy and I. "Are apparently no longer talking and from where I'm sitting, it looks like you are enemies now. You two." He gestured between me and Logan. "Are evidently still together, and prospering.
You two." He pointed to Logan and Luke. "You two... I don't know what the fuck is your relationship status after everything that happened, yet, and you two." He finally pointed between Luke and me. "You two started all this shit show by deciding to collide lips together. I don't give a damn about what the reason was. I will get to that latter. What I'm doing now is merely pointing out what got us here in the first place. Now that that is out of the way, let's discuss."
"It didn't mean anything," I almost yelled, and turned to my friend before I took a deep breath. "Suzy, you are my friend. You know me better. You know I wouldn't do anything to hurt you."
"Wouldn't you?" she looked at me. "News flash, you already did."
Suzy sounded cold. As if she wasn't trying anything to preserve our friendship. My eyes became glassy without a warning.
"But I told you what happened. I told you, you just chose not to believe me. I had a panic attack." I turned to Luke. "Luke, tell her. Tell her the truth. Suzy, it meant nothing. It wasn't the way it looked like."
Suzy scoffed and turn her attention to her boyfriend for the first time since we all sat down.
"This is a great opportunity, Luke. Look me in the eye, be a man, and tell me you have no feelings for Amelia."
Luke looked at his girlfriend, then to me, and then to Logan before he shook his head and run both his hands on his hair.
"I don't," he said. "Everything was just as Amelia told you. I told you this. She needed help, I was there, and I helped."
"Don't you fucking lie to me," she screamed and things seemed to have stood still yet again. Everybody around the shop heard her and almost everyone stopped what they were doing and stared at our table.
"Err..." Leo waved his hand to the still onlooking people. "Sorry about that folks, she had an ice-cream stuck in her throat." To Suzy, he hissed. "Will you calm down?" In which Suzy responded by crossing her arms against her chest again and sulked.
Logan has been too quiet. Looking. Listening.
"I'm your girlfriend, Luke," she continued. "I know you. I've always known you. If you had it your way, you would have preferred to have Amelia since the first time you met us. Wouldn't you."
"Don't be absurd, Suzy. Where did you get this idea anyway? It's ridiculous."
"Is it?" Logan spoke, surprising all of us. When he first spoke, he sounded calm, but let me tell you. By the end of it, things took a serious, and weird turn. This is what he said, and oh my God, did it take me by surprise.
"We are friends, aren't we? We owe it to each other to be fully honest, and in honoring that, I'm being real with you. I've had my suspicions. Why I never talked about them was because I trusted you and I trust Amelia. My Girlfriend. So, you might as well be honest with your girlfriend and me. So, I ask you this. Is it absurd? Are you telling me, you never had any feelings for my Amelia? You never had thoughts of taking her, and back her up into a corner somewhere, and bury your di..."
"Watch it, Logan," Luke warned.
"Logan, " I hissed. I didn't expect him to say that. In fact, I was shocked. What the hell? "What are you doing?"
"Whoa, hold up." Leo who up to that point been quietly listening, finally seemed to hear something that got his giddy side to immerge. "What the actual fuck?"
"You see? Suzy said. "Even your best friend knew something was up with you. Are you telling me both of us are just crazy for thinking that?"
A sob escaped me and I didn't care about muffling it. Logan was supposed to be on my side. Things were not supposed to be escalating and pushing us to the brink of losing the friendship we had all built.
I planted my elbows on top of the table and hold my head with my hands. "Stop it. All of you," I cried. "This is becoming crazy and I can't take it anymore."
Logan put one hand on my thigh and the other around my shoulder, pulling me against him. "Babe, it's okay." He planted a kiss on the side of my head. "I'm just asking questions. I just want to hear it from him. Everything is okay."
"Fine," Luke said, and I raised my head to look at him. In fact, everybody looked at him. "You guys want the truth? Here it comes. Yes, I had feelings for Amelia."
My jaw dropped.
Logan narrowed his eyes.
Suzy looked like she was really going to cry out loud this time, and Leo.
For the first time, Leo didn't have anything to say.
Thank God.
He sat there. His eyes wide like he couldn't believe what he had just heard. Truthfully, I don't think any of us believed what we had just heard. It seemed the women's intuition won once again. Suzy's intuitions were right.
"Now before you all do anything drastic. I said had. Not have. That was a long time ago, and those feelings are long gone. So, hear me when I say this. I-DON'T-HAVE-FEELINGS-FOR-AMELIA. Not anymore, so you all can rest assured. I didn't do that in the parking lot because I wanted to. I just had to. I value our friendship, Logan and I love you, Suzy. Besides, Amelia loves Logan, and she loves you, Suzy. So please, can you guys make-up, and let's put this crazy behind us."
Suzy cried then.
And I cried then.
And it was a table of crying girls.
"I'm sorry, Suzy." I hiccuped. I didn't even know why I was crying, but there was a load on my chest and I just couldn't stop the tears. Who knew, maybe the more the tears flowed, the more the load would decrease. "I'm so sorry, I didn't mean to hurt you. I love you. I love you so much and I can't lose you. Not you."
Suzy continued crying without answering.
Leo, God brace him, he stood up from his chair and walked around to the side of the boys, leaving an empty space between Suzy and me.
We needed that space.
With no hesitation, I got up from my chair and sat next to her.
"Suzy, I called. "Talk to me. I'm sorry. I'm here. I'm your friend. I... I..." Suzy threw her arms around my shoulders and bury her head on my neck. I took in a deep breath, almost surprised that she was hugging me. I hugged her back. With all my strength, I hugged her back and bury my own head on her neck.
"Oh, Amelia."
"Please forgive me."
"No, you forgive me. It wasn't your fault."
"I love you. I love you, Suzy."
"I love you too."
And so, we sat there. Hugging each other and crying on each other's shoulders for who knows how long. And when we finally let go of each other. We managed to have a small laugh between ourselves.
"Well, now that things seemed to be settled." Logan got up from his chair. "My girlfriend and I need to prepare for our date later." He turned to Luke then. "You and I need to talk."
"Yeah, later."
I didn't know we had plans for a date, but it looked like it and I was sure as hell not going with my eyes puffed out like that. I needed a rest, probably a good sleep before that, and since things were finally back to normal, maybe I was going to be at peace and enjoy my first, real date.
Or so I hoped.
*****
I literally woke up and wrote this chapter in less than four hours with no real plan. Just like all my other chapters, but at least with other chapters, sometimes I have a vague idea of what I want to happen.
This one I just winged it and went with the flow.
Let me know what you think.
Was it okay?
Please don't forget to vote. Love all of you my readers.
