Chapter 44: A "See You Again"

Sheira's POV

As dawn painted the sky in hues of pink and gold, I stirred from my slumber, my mind still clouded with the remnants of dreams. Beside me, Eamon lay peacefully, unaware of the stirring world around him. My keen ears caught a faint sound in the distance, drawing my attention to a soft glow not far from our campsite.

Curiosity piqued, I rose from my bedroll and followed the light, my steps silent on the forest floor. The glow intensified, illuminating the figure of Lyra, radiant and ethereal in the early morning light. I approached cautiously, offering a hesitant greeting.

“Hi, Lyra,” I spoke softly, my voice carrying a hint of wonder. “What brings you here at this hour?”

Lyra's smile was warm and knowing as she welcomed my company. She began to speak of her own journey, of battles fought and trials endured in the past. I listened intently, my heart heavy with the weight of their shared struggles.

“Ziyou has faced many hardships,” I remarked, my brow furrowing with concern.

Lyra's eyes sparkled with agreement as I recounted the lessons I had learned along our journey.

“Life is…love…hate…happy…sorrow…peace…war,” I murmured.

The sun rose higher in the sky as we spoke, casting long shadows over the forest floor.

Before long, our peaceful conversation was interrupted by the arrival of unexpected guests – bandits, their faces twisted with greed and malice.

In a moment like this… there are still betrayers of our homeland, my heart heavy with sorrow, filled with disappointment.

As I was still in my thoughts, a man struck forward. I quickly deflect his attack with my sword, pushing him back. “Get back, Lyra,” I told her to stay behind me.

The bandits slowly drew all their weapons and pointed them towards us. “We’re totally outnumbered,” unwilling to give up, I stay on my spot, preventing them from getting any closer.

Suddenly, rustling bushes signaled another threat. Gripping my sword tighter, I realized we were besieged from all sides. Without hesitation, the bandits charged, and I swiftly turned to meet their onslaught, only to witness a shadowy figure swoop down, delivering a devastating blow to our foes.

“Tsk, you've interrupted my sleep.”

“Eamon!”

Arvid and his troops also came to our rescue.

“Protect Lyra,” Eamon ordered.

He drew both swords, dashed towards the bandits. Swords clenched in the woods as the wind blew the leaves around Eamon’s fighting show.

Before the leaves could touch the ground, Eamon successfully knocked them down. The bandits cried for help, but no one was coming to their rescue.

Eamon walked closer to one of the bandits. “Remember my face, jobless man,” Eamon smirked as he clutched his shirt.

“Thank you, Eamon,” I grasped his shoulder.

I rested my right knee on the ground as I looked at the man in front of me who seemed to be their leader. “What’s your purpose?” I asked.

“I won’t betray my boss!” he spat.

I arched an eyebrow. “Yet you betrayed your country.”

“Come on now, my sword thirsts for blood, big fella,” Eamon interjected, eyeing his gleaming sword.

The bandit's expression turned to dread as he divulged their intentions, "We serve a man, much like the one behind you, but taller.”

I turned to Eamon, confused by what the man just stated. “What’s his name,” Eamon asked the man, anger filled his tone.

“He never stated his name, I swear!” the man exclaimed.

Sighing, I muttered to myself, "Let's spare further bloodshed.”

In the heat of battle, I made a choice that set me apart from my adversaries. Instead of seeking retribution, I opted to capture the bandits, granting them a chance at redemption.

"Their fate is not ours to decide," I declared to General Arvid, my voice resolute. "But they must face the consequences of their deeds."

“Escort them back to the kingdom and secure them," I ordered. "Arvid, you and your men shall return to the kingdom, ensuring these miscreants reach their cells unharmed.”

"And you, your majesty? I cannot leave you unguarded," he protested.

Turning to him, I returned his sword. "I am not alone; I have Eamon."

After a pause, he replied, "Understood. May you be safe, my Queen." Arvid and his troops led the prisoners away to the castle's dungeons.

With the bandits secured, I turned my attention back to my own journey, my gaze fixed on the horizon ahead. As we resumed our travels, I and Eamon spoke in hushed tones of the impending war while following Lyra's and Toren's steps.

“We've discovered a lot about our country,” I started.

“Every valuable information should give us a huge step forward,” Eamon replied. “But there's one thing that has yet to unfold,” he continued.

“What is it?” I asked.

“I'm sure what the bandits mean by a guy like me is Fenton, my brother. How can he do something this far? He knows our position, and I know him; this is not that simple,” he stated.

I scratched my head as I replied, “You're right, there is something off.”

As we walked, the landscape began to shift around us, the dense forest giving way to open fields of grass and towering trees. Eamon and I exchanged puzzled glances, our curiosity piqued by the sudden change in scenery.

"This feels different," I remarked, my voice tinged with uncertainty. "Where are we?"

Lyra and Toren, who had been leading the way, came to a sudden stop, their gaze fixed on the horizon ahead. Eamon and I followed their gaze, our eyes widening in astonishment as we beheld the sight before us.

"We've reached the end of our journey," Lyra announced, her voice echoing through the stillness of the clearing. "And now, the time has come for you to fulfill your destiny."

My heart raced with anticipation as Lyra spoke, my mind buzzing with questions. "What do you mean?" I asked, my voice trembling with emotion.

Suddenly, Lyra summoned a mirror before us, reflecting our journey back to us in vivid detail.

"The answers you're searching for are in what you can see in this mirror,” Lyra stated.

As I gazed into the mirror, the images of myself and Eamon emerged, only to fade away, replaced by scenes depicting the trials and tribulations of our odyssey. War, loss, and despair unfolded before my eyes, each moment etched with the rawness of our struggles."The answers, my dear companions, have always resided within," Lyra proclaimed, her eyes ablaze with a mixture of pride and insight.

And then, as if guided by unseen hands, the mirror morphed once more, sketching out our determination, our courage, our unyielding bond of friendship and love.

"You both have gleaned a profound lesson," Lyra paused, her words hanging in the air like a sacred incantation, "You've learned the art of synergy, the essence of trust, the valor to face adversity, the willingness to make sacrifices, the power of forgiveness, and above all, the enduring strength of love."

Lyra and Toren slowly began to leave the ground. “Now, quick. Your country needs you,” Toren stated.

Before I could reply, with a blinding flash of light, Lyra and Toren's forms merged into one, their essence transcending the mortal realm. My voice caught in my throat as I watched them ascend, a silent promise of guidance and protection.

“Thank you, brave warriors, Sheira, daughter of Zane, Queen of Ziyou, Eamon, son of Levisay,” Lyra's voice echoed in the clearing, fading into the gentle rustle of leaves overhead. "May you bring peace to this land. I will watch you from above."

And then, as suddenly as it had begun, the light faded, leaving Eamon and I standing in the clearing, our minds reeling with the magnitude of what had just transpired.

Before I could put things together in my head, Eamon broke the thought as he grabbed my shoulder. “Ziyou needs you.”

I faced Eamon only to see… his warm smile.

Suddenly the courage within me lit up, holding Eamon's hand that rested on my shoulder. “Ziyou needs us,” I added.

Eamon let go of his grip and gave him his right hand. “Together,” he said.

I smiled. With determination burning inside me, I placed my right hand on his. “Together.”

Together, we would face whatever challenges lay ahead, united in purpose and bound by destiny.

To be continued…
