Chapter 7

Amber though long and hard about whether or not she should tell Coal and Smokey about her dreams. It would be nice to be able to talk to someone about her father, but on the other hand, how would they react when she told them she had to leave?
Why does this have to be so difficult?
Apparently Coal had noticed her frustrated face because he came over to her and sat down. He had a mouse hanging from his jaws. There were still a few rodents around even though all the hay was gone and the barn was pretty much empty.
"Wanna share?"
"I'm not really feeling up-" He cut her off before she could finish.
"I know something's going on." He dropped the mouse and licked her ear. "Tell me about it."
Amber went into detail about how she'd been seeing her father and how Catnip's sister had visited. He seemed a bit frustrated, or angry, even, when she told him she had to leave.
He barely talked to her for the next two days. Smokey tried to figure out what was wrong, but neither Coal nor Amber wanted to talk about their argument. After the third sunrise of their silent treatment, Smokey had had enough. It caught Amber off guard a hit when he confronted them; he normally kept to himself.
"Talk." He'd rounded them up and forced them to explain why they were so tense. "Something's up."
Before she could explain, Coal cut in. "Amber thinks she's too good for us."
"Hey! That's not fair I-" but he kept going.
"She's leaving the barn. Going to 'find the Clans'." He glared at her, a face she'd never really expected from him, considering they'd been in love for so many moons.
"Hold up, what?" Amber couldn't help but feel bad for Smokey. His face contorted into confusion.
"My dreams..." Amber gave Smokey the same talk she'd given Coal. She explained the pull the Clans had on her heart, dragging her towards them, closer every day.
He was quiet for a few moments. "You should go." He murmured after a brief silence.
"But Smokey, honestly-" Coal sounded as though he wanted to go on another rant.
"Both of you." He smiled slightly. "You should find the Clans together. Leave me."
"We cant do that!" Amber's words broke into a run, spilling out of her mouth at rapid speed. "You'll be alone! And-and what about the Twolegs? They'd be confused why we left and you would need to hunt and everything by yourself all the tim-" She stopped. The look on her brother and Coal's faces said it all. He was right. They should go. "Okay. We're going to find the Clans."
