Amber Home - Welcome
A warm home greeted those yellow amber eyes of innocence as soon as the woman, who had picked him up from the orphanage, opened the door that separated him from his soon to be habitat that is, starting today, he'll be living in here. "Go on, Eijun," a soft voice ushered the young boy to go inside, placing a gentle pat on his back, encouraging him to step in.
The woman was beautiful; her purple eyes reminded him of the little lilies that he used to pick over at the backyard of the orphanage where he used to stay.
A smile crawled up to her lips as Eijun stared up at her with pure innocence; it wasn't enough to swoon internally so she cradle up his tiny frame into her arms and carried her into their apartment, her husband following behind.
"Rana, he can walk on his own. Stop babying him," a snarky remark escaped the man's lips, which followed behind the woman, closing the door behind him.
"Mei, it's only the first day. Try to be nice, will you? He's your son starting today," the said "Rana" replied, giving a warning look at her husband who only huffed in response.
Eijun could only stare at him clueless, and then went back at looking at her foster mother. Rana smiled down at him, "Sorry about Papa, Eijun. He's having a bad day." She tells him, brushing her nose against him softly.
"Papa...?" Murmured the innocent boy, seeming unfamiliar to the family he now had. "M-Mama...?" he spurts out hesitantly to gain confirmation that indeed, the woman carrying him in his arms, is now the mother he yearned and lacked for years.
Rana's heart fluttered, hearing those words from her now baby boy. Droplets of tears stung the corner of her eyes as she smiled, "Un. Starting today, I'll be your mommy, okay? Eijun-kun."
"Rana, can you prepare dinner? I'm hungry already." Mei called from the living room, raising his feet up the coffee table and focusing in reading baseball magazine.
Sighing, the wife set Eijun down on the floor, walking over the living room's door frame and glare at her husband, "Fine. Then you can show Eijun his room, Mei," she says in a tone of authority, crossing her arms.
Mei twitched and poked his eyes from the magazine that was hiding his face. He couldn't say no to his wife. This is the woman who's been keeping his feet on the ground ever since she said yes to him when he asked her to be his girlfriend. That commitment deepened when he got on his knees and asked her to spend the rest of her life with him, and exchange vows in front of the altar.
Mei sighed, putting the magazine beside the unoccupied space on the couch. He pushed himself off the sofa and walked over to his wife and pointed at his lips that pouted, "Not without a kiss," he says smugly.
Rana sighed, bringing her lips to peck Mei on the cheek, "There, now Eijun," she looked down at the boy whose hands gripped at the hem of her long skirt. "Papa will show you your room now." she smiles down at him.
The hold on her skirts tightened when Eijun's eyes shifted to Mei who was glaring icily at him, looking not amused at all.
The boy hid behind Rana's legs, scared to even lock eyes with his father, and whimpered softly.
"Now, now." Rana bent her knees, coming to her son's aid, wiping his cheeks dry. "Papa seems to be scary at first, but deep down, he's a really nice dork."
Eijun's blinked, "Dork?"
Chuckling, Rana smiled, nodding her head, "Right. You can call him Daddy Dork!"
"Hey, Rana!" Mei snapped, stopping her from teaching the kid nicknames he doesn't want to get called at. Hell, he's already gone through Rana; he doesn't want to deal with a toddler he barely knew.
"Alright, let's bring you to your room!" Rana cheered, picking the boy once again before giving him to his father. "Make sure to help him unpack!" she reminded Mei, knocking on his forehead that creased when she did so.
Mei grumbled and frowned but that didn't stop him from going upstairs when Rana shot him a look. Upon reaching the door to his left when he got to the second floor, Mei entered the room, setting Eijun down. He did a couple of checks to make sure all furniture are okay, and the toys they bought are all neatly arranged on the boy's shelves.
Eijun approached his large sized bed that could at least fit 20 Eijun's (in Eijun's mind). The little boy checked its softness, by pressing his small palms on the mattress twice, before attempting to climb up by lifting one leg up.
Mei just got out of the bathroom after checking the pipes and saw the toddler's struggle. "What are you doing?" he sighed, what a handful child, he thought; walking over to his adopted child and lift him up on the bed.
"T-Thank you... P-Papa ..." Eijun muttered nervously, having the impression that Mei didn't liked to be called that.
"Don't be much of a nuisance to Rana, okay? We'll be downstairs if you need anything," Was Mei's last reminder, completely forgetting to assist Eijun in unpacking. He descended downstairs, walking pass the frame that led to the kitchen, he stopped a few steps, peeking at his humming wife who exerted bright radiance ever since she woke up this day, knowing they'll be picking up Eijun from the agency.
She's really happy that we adopted that kid. Mei told himself; walking back inside their living room, collapsing on the couch. Fragments of previous events flashed back in his mind that caused his hands to grip on each other. No, this time is different. It won't happen again. I won't let it happen again.
"Papa," Mei hadn't notice Eijun enter the room until the boy's voice called him. The little brunette boy grinned brightly at his father and showed him a baseball bit that tucked in a ball inside it, "Let's go play baseball!"
"Ha? Baseball?" the former ace of Inashiro Vocational was skeptical. He didn't to waste his oh so good skills with a mere five year old boy, who - he is sure of - doesn't even know his status in life now. He, Narumiya Mei, the professional baseball player, number one ace of Team Japan is unknown to little Eijun, despite all the achievements he's accomplished. But right now, Eijun must be one of those; and that is for Mei to be a good father to him.
"Baseball! Let's play!" Eijun exhorted, tugging Mei's sleeve, urging to push through in playing his favorite sport. The blonde couldn't say no; one is because of Rana, and two - who could deny those amber eyes burning in passion? Surely, didn't Mei, because he had soon those similar eyes before; and it never failed to send chills down his spine.
"Tch, fine kid. Stop pulling my shirt already," Mei stands up and goes out of the living room to go to his wife and ask where she put his glove, "The brat wants to play baseball, right now," he emphasized, nettled at the fact that Eijun won't stop vexing him.
Rana was currently washing some vegetables she bought at the market this morning; she paused momentarily, racking up her brain to remember the time she and Mei fixed the placement of her husband's baseball equipment. "Oh, it's in the upper left shelf, beside the shoe shelves," she informed him, shooting a smile.
"Thanks," he replied before going to the gekkan of their house and check if his stuff was still there. As expected, there it was; untouched and unaltered, just as the way he left them there, the first time they moved in. He grabbed his glove, also his hat that he wore during his times as a high school athlete. The cap brought back nostalgic memories, happy ones and sad ones included; but what made it perfect is - this hat was returned to him during the time he first met Rana; when they were in their last year of high school.
Despite attending different schools, that wasn't a hindrance to them when it comes to be deeply in love with each other. Mei wore the hat that fir perfectly on his head, it's edges softly pushing some of his soft locks down on his scalp.
Mei felt like the invisible Tokyo Prince again; during his reigning days.
"Papa?" Eijun caught up at him at the entrance hall, wearing his large clove on his tiny hands, his big white cap slipping of his mini head every time he tried to slip it on.
It made him pout and frown all the time, but didn't give up in putting it back.
"You ready sport?" Mei questioned him. He suddenly snickered to himself, Sport. I sound like an old man just by saying that.
Eijun smiled brightly at him; as if giving off radiance was a natural bloom to the toddler. "Hai! Let's play catch!" he showed that wide grin that got Mei scoffing a smirk.
Kid's got energy.
Mei had lost count on how many times Eijun fell hard on the ground, scratched his knees, and cried like a baby every time he failed to catch his throws. The baseball pro tried his best not to throw that hard - he was at the stage of just lightly tossing the ball - or even roll it simply on the ground; but Eijun was Eijun.
He was clumsy, a cry baby, and a real pain in the ass. - As how Mei described it.
Constantly, he had to check if his son was okay, or if still had the will or capability to continue their simple play of catch.
Mei had to eventually drag him to a nearby bench and check his wounds. "Stop crying already. You're not gonna be better if you keep on snivelling," he deadpanned, lifting up one of his adopted child's legs to see it starting to bleed.
He tried to blow to at least soothe up the pain, ripping a part of his shirt, wrapping it around Ejiun's scrapped knee. "Damn, Rana's gonna kill me."
Eijun continued on sobbing; his wiping of tears becoming useless for they were shedding nonstop.
"Eijun." Mei said strictly, losing temper but didn't help his son to calm down. It only made his crying worse. "H-Hey! I told you stop already sheesh!" he scratched the back of his head, not knowing what to do.
Deciding that staying here was useless, Mei turned his back at Eijun, crouching down. The boy blinked at his posture and was ordered to climb on and put his arms around the adult's neck.
Right there, Mei was giving Eijun a piggy back ride, the gloves they used pinned in between Eijun's tiny body and his back. The ball was in the toddler's palms, and their caps stayed on their head.
"Mama's not going to be mad at you so you don't have to be worry." Mei reassured, still hearing silent mewling from Eijun. "In fact, I'll be the one in trouble..." he grumbled, glaring at the ground, hoping that he can blame it for having gravity.
Eijun finally quiet down, gripping on Mei's shirt. "It's my fault... It's my fault... For being clumsy..." the little brunette mumbled, snot slipping out of his nostrils as he sniffed.
"Well, it's good that you know that, sport." Mei says, not acting like an adult. "But seriously though, Rana will give all her rage on me. Primarily because I'm a parent now, and that I have to take care of my child and such."
"Mama really loves you, you know." he then mentioned remembering the first time Rana set her eyes on Eijun who was busy playing on the farm with his friends; getting covered in mud.
He couldn't forget how she smiled whenever Eijun grinned while he had fun playing; her excitement whenever she decided to visit him at the orphanage on free days; her diligence in arranging the adoption papers had psyched her for months, and oh dear - for how she cared whenever she heard Eijun was sick or had a fight with his fellow orphans.
How could Mei erase that memory of Rana finally having a reason to live again; seeing her give all her love to a child she was barely with throughout her life. Those months of convincing her husband about Eijun made Mei realize, having Eijun made Rana happy; and it made him happy.
And even he made the slightest - even the tiniest - effort to give the same love Rana had for the kid, maybe then, maybe, he can bring back the cheerful Rana he had lost once before.
"Um... Papa, I... I love Mama too..." Eijun spoke up after Mei indulged himself in overthinking about Rana again. He glances back at the boy who had those golden eyes burn through his soul. "Mama... She's a kind person. She gives me snacks whenever she visits me at the orphanage, and she likes to play with me when she has time. Also, she likes giving me gifts and also gave this glove when she found out I love baseball..."
Wait what?! Rana gave that to you?! No wonder I was missing a glove. Only then, Mei had realized, her wife was having secret visits with Eijun without him knowing. Not that he minded, or he was mad, he just knew it wasn't like Rana to talk about her day for she was always the one who asked him about his day.
Mei sighed, still finding it hard to accept that he was a parent. A guardian. He had to take care of a kid.
For as long as he remembered, he was the one being taking care of. But as they say, tides can turn in an instant. And Mei wasn't expecting for Rana wanting to take in a child.
Mei popped a vein and gave a comical glare at Eijun, "Hey kid! You're not the only one who loves Rana you hear me! I won't let you have her to yourself, got it?!" he warned but Eijun just stared at him innocently.
It was the same look Eijun had given his new father who was now getting scolded by his wife and got his ears pinched in between her fingers.
"Ow, ow Rana! I'm sorry! I won't do it again I promise!" Mei pleaded continuously as Rana gave him an earful. If only Eijun didn't have the need to get treated, it would continue up until dinner.
Eijun was carried to his room via Rana because - he might even drop Eijun at this point. - According to Rana.
The woman started to put antiseptic on Eijun's wounds, placing bandages all over and didn't let him move around while she said so.
She then carried him into the living room where Mei was watching TV. Their feud wasn't finish and Rana strictly reminded him let Eijun watch cartoons in peace, flipping the channels, making him miss today's baseball match.
Mei had no counter and dealt with kiddy musical shows that Eijun loved to watch. Who even watches teletubbies these days?!
"Daddy, I had fun today." Eijun tells Mei, his attention averting from the show for a while. Mei didn't return his glance and frowned at the screen instead, listening to what Eijun has to say. "I know you don't think it, but, I love Daddy, too. And I think you love me too."
"Ha?" Mei gave that incredulous, raising an eyebrow of pride. "What makes you say that, kid?"
The boy smiled, "Papa carried me back to the house because I was hurt. I think he's a nice person!"
I carried you because you were clumsy as hell and couldn't walk on your two damn feet.
"But, that isn't the reason why I love you..."
Mei creased his eyebrows, now glancing at the kid.
"It's because, you said you love Mommy too. And that's enough reason for me to love you too."
Mei was astonished by the boy's words. For a little guy like him, he sure has big words - Mei thought.
"Dammit! Don't get ahead of yourself, kid! Just because you tell me all those embarrassing stuff doesn't mean I'll like you already!" Mei head locked Eijun, and ruffled his hair, ignoring the struggles and whines of the poor kid that was pleading for him to let go.
Although acting this way, Mei can't deny the fact that Eijun's words made his heart flutter, and for a moment there he wanted to suffocate the boy in a hug.
He wouldn't let Eijun see him blushing because of how adorable his son is. His thought of hiding his embarrassment backfired when Rana caught him bullying Eijun in act, and he got the master's bedroom all to himself that night for his wife refused to sleep on one bed with him at the moment.
I guess having a child has its pros and cons.
