Y/n is so pretty today… I muse as I gaze at my best friend, Y/n L/n.

She is right outside my house, petting Ruddier’s fluffy raccoon belly and looking as beautiful as ever. Her glittering eyes, shiny h/c hair, and contagious smile seem to be teasing me as I carefully peek out the window of my alchemy lab, trying not to be seen.

I asked Y/n to look after Ruddiger while I prepared something special for us to eat for lunch, which she always does exceptionally well. Ruddier likes her a lot– possibly even more than me! Her motherly demeanor always attracts the attention of small animals, such as the time she successfully held a squirrel after feeding it a really tasty acorn or when a group of ducklings adorably followed her all around town.

That’s just one of the many things I love about her.

One worried glance Y/n gives towards the house reminds me that I’m taking too long on lunch. I separate myself from the window and walk to my lab desk, where our lunch happens to be. Appetizing ham sandwiches and succulent apples rest on a silver tray, along with two glasses of pink lemonade. A small and clear flask bottle is just off the side of the tray, reflecting the sunlight coming from the window.

Just last night, I conducted an experiment– a very special experiment. I took a trip to the main town in Corona to find Xavier, who happened to have a book on ancient witchcraft. While I’m a man of science and not sorcery, I hypothesized that a book of spells possibly had some scientific elements.

To put it simply, I used an old recipe inside the book to carefully craft what’s considered to be a love potion.

Of course, it’s not a potion. It’s more of a… liquid concoction that I’m planning to give to Y/n.

The rose-pink solution mesmerizes me as I grip my gloved hand around the glass flask. Uncorking the flask, I gently pour its contents into the lemonade on the right until the last drop reaches the drink. Luckily, the strawberry juice that I had mixed in the lemonade earlier successfully camouflages the love concoction from sight. Y/n shouldn’t be able to tell the difference. To finish it off, I place a miniature, paper f/c umbrella into Y/n’s cup, while I place a blue one into my cup. That way, I won’t accidentally drink the concoction and screw up the entire plan.

“Varian, do you need any help?”

I jolt up, startled upon hearing Y/n’s gentle voice from outside. Quickly straightening out my hair, I yell back, “N-No, I’m ok! Everything’s ready.”

I take the silver tray and carry it outside. Y/n smiles at me, holding my precious Ruddiger in her loving arms. My heart stops for a moment. She really is beautiful…

“Wow, looks delicious!” Y/n gushes. “Let’s sit over there under that apple tree.”

“Sounds good.” I follow Y/n over to a luscious apple tree by the edge of Old Corona. The tree is the perfect place to have picnics such as this one. Its large and leafy branches help block out the sun’s harsh rays with a cooling shade. I set the tray of food down, and Y/n set Ruddiger on the grass. Together we watch the goofy raccoon as he chitters and rushes up the tree to collect some apples of his own. This is indeed his favorite tree.

As we sit and eat our ham sandwiches, I space out, staring fixedly at Y/n. I have never felt something so strong towards anyone. Not even Cassandra made his heart beat as quickly as Y/n does. The longer I stare, the more vivid my daydreams become. Strolling through Old Corona hand-in-hand… practicing alchemy in my lab… cuddling by the fire during the harsh winter months. All of that is lovely to think about.

Suddenly, a hand waves over my face.

“Hello… Earth to Varian,” Y/n says teasingly.

I snap out of my trance, feeling my face flush.

“Is everything alright? You look tired,” she continues. She looks worried.

“Uh– No, no, everything’s fine!” I brush Y/n’s comment off, chuckling softly. Y/n looks confused, but I don’t elaborate.

“Alright,” she says. “If you say so.”

She reaches for a pink lemonade, which catches my attention. As her hand wraps around one of the glasses, I realize she’s grabbed mine unintentionally. In a panic, I hurriedly wrap my fingers around the glass and Y/n’s hand, stopping her from going any further.

“Varian–?”

“W-Wait, Y/n!” I ignore that our hands are touching each other to prevent mental combustion. “The one with the blue umbrella is my drink. Yours is the f/c one.”

Y/n glances to her right, noticing the second glass of lemonade. “Oh, sorry! I didn’t notice.”

Slowly removing her hand from underneath mine, she grabs the other glass and brings it to her lips. I watch Y/n intensely as she takes the first sip.

“These mini umbrellas are so cute!” Y/n gushes, pulling the drink away from her face. She runs her fingers along the top of the umbrella, smiling warmly.

“Heh, thanks!” I freeze up when Y/n looks up at me. A faint sparkle moves through her eyes, and she can’t seem to take them off of me.

She’s captivated.

Playing dumb, I run my fingers through my hair and ask her, “What’s wrong, Y/n? Is there something on my face?”

“Kiss me.”

“Huh?!”

In all honesty, I was not expecting that.

My freckled face flushes red like a tomato, and my heart skips a beat.

Y/n frowns in a cute, pouty way. “Didn’t you hear me? I wanna kiss.”

Varian, you dummy! It’s just the love potion taking effect. I take a deep breath and awkwardly lean in closer to Y/n. She does the same, grinning mischievously and letting her eyes pierce into my soul. In a way, I feel she’s overpowering me with a simple stare.

My hesitation prevents me from taking the next step. Lucky for me, Y/n is already one step ahead. She gently grips my shoulders and pulls me in, my lips falling into hers.

It takes me a short while to loosen my tense body, but when I do I allow myself to melt into the kiss. Y/n runs her delicate fingers through my hair while she holds my face in her other hand. I feel I’m immobilized in the moment, unsure of what I should do. I’ve never kissed a girl before!

Stuck and confused, I let Y/n take the lead and see where she’ll go.

Time Skip

I want this feeling never to end.

I finally got the chance of a lifetime– spending a day of romantic activities with the one and only Y/n– and it was everything I dreamed it’d be.

We are lying in a nearby field that’s covered with beautiful wildflowers, stargazing to our heart’s content. Y/n has her head on my chest, and her arm is draped across my stomach. I have to fight the urge to squeal like a hyperactive teenage girl. This moment is perfect– just perfect! Why didn’t I make a love concoction sooner?

Y/n stops looking at the stars for a moment and instead switches her attention to me. She looks so happy.

I know the concoction won’t last long. I estimated it wouldn’t last more than a day, but somehow I feel that our connection runs deeper than that. This is something special.

“I like this… being so close to you,” I blurt out. Y/n snuggles herself deeper into my chest, humming contently.

“Your heartbeat’s really loud,” she says.

I freeze up, only making my heart pound even harder. “O-Oh, it– it is?”

“I like it. It’s comforting.”

I wrap my arms around Y/n and hold her close. “You are the best thing that has ever happened to me, Y/n. I want you to know that.”

“You too.” Y/n smiles something meaningful, making the tiny crow’s feet etch themselves near her gorgeous eyes. She leans forward to give me a peck on the cheek before whispering in my ear, “I love you. I always have.”

I almost feel overwhelmed. I squeeze her a little tighter. “Me too.”

A moment of silence follows after that. It isn’t an awkward silence like how I expected it to be. Instead, it’s more of a comfortable silence that proves our closeness to be real. If anything, I wouldn’t take this moment back.

However, something nags at my heart. A sense of guilt washes over me when I realize I could’ve gotten this chance differently. Using a chemical reaction wasn’t something I needed to win Y/n’s heart. What I did wasn’t right. I had to say something.

“Y/n…” I say. Discomfort is evident in my body language. “I have something to tell you.”

Y/n blinks curiously and tilts her head slightly to the side like a small animal would. “What is it?”

A lump wells up in my throat and, before I can completely break down from the guilt, I simply spit it out. “I had you drink something earlier– something that isn’t normal.”

“Oh, so that was what it was?”

My mind blanks for a second. “What?”

A sheepish laugh leaves Y/n’s mouth. “I already knew. Whatever it was you gave me didn’t have a lasting effect on me. It must’ve been faulty or something.”

My mind flashes back to our picnic earlier today.

I watch Y/n intensely as she takes the first sip.

“These mini umbrellas are so cute!” Y/n gushes, pulling the drink away from her face. She runs her fingers along the top of the umbrella, smiling warmly.

A visible “oh” forms in my lips. She only took one sip.

“I’m sorry I didn’t let you know sooner,” Y/n apologizes, rubbing the back of her neck. “I would’ve said something, but we were having such a good time. I couldn’t ruin the moment.”

“No, Y/n.” I reach for her hand. “You don’t need to apologize. I’m in the wrong. I shouldn’t have messed with your brain chemicals like that. I just thought… I thought that you’d love me if I gave you that concoction, even if it was just artificial.”

Y/n flashes me a fond smile, her eyes glittering with the stars. “You’re so dumb.”

She pulls me in for another kiss, completely catching me off guard. When she pulls away, she asks, “What makes you think any of this was artificial?”
