11. Harsh Words

──•~❉᯽❉~•──

THE GLOW OF THE TV ILLUMINATED THE LIVING ROOM. It was quiet and peaceful, only the sounds of hums coming from the screen, delicately offering a background noise.

A few hours had gone past, with the night sky displaying itself. It was getting late, resulting in Dylan falling asleep on the couch. Charlie, on the other hand, was coming back from the kitchen, drinking a glass of water. He took notice of his daughter, lying there, soundlessly and a small smile appeared on his face.

Putting the glass down he walked over and grabbed a throw blanket that was draped on a recliner. Gently placing the soft material on her, keeping Dylan from getting cold. She stirred a little before going still again, accepting the warmth it offered.

Charlie walked over to the other couch and slumped on it comfortably. He decided to watch a bit of TV, waiting for Bella to get home. However, his eyelids started to get heavy, the screen getting blurry and sleep soon consumed him. Yet, it would soon be disrupted by heavy stomping outside on the porch and an abrupt opening of the front door.

"Edward, I said leave me alone!"

"Bella, don't do this please!"

The sound of Bella's voice awakens not only Charlie but Dylan. She quickly sat up, alarmed as Bella said the following words before slamming the door. "It's over, get out!"

"Hey, hey, hey! Bella? What's going on" Charlie said after jumping up from the couch, immediately following Bella. Dylan, stunned by what happened, took a second before getting up from her spot and headed up the stairs.

"I just have to get out of here. Where's Dylan? Dylan?!" She frantically repeated, walking across the hallway, and opening the younger girl's bedroom door.

"Bella, I'm here! What happened?" Dylan worriedly called out, pulling herself up from the last step and standing beside Charlie.

Bella hastily walked out of Dylan's room, holding a small duffle bag. "Pack your stuff, we're leaving now." She tosses it to Dylan who looks at it confused.

The older twin opens her bedroom door and slams it shut behind her. Charlie walks up to it and knocks softly. "Bella?" He called her name once more, his face showing concern.

Dylan bites her inner lip and heads over to Charlie. "Here let me talk to her dad. Maybe she'll tell me what's going on?" She offered, seeing Charlie nod, and stepped aside for Dylan to open the door.

When Dylan opens and walks in, her sight first lies on Edward, who is beside Bella, helping her pack. "Okay, can you both explain to me what the hell is going on?" She asked after closing the door. Something felt wrong, the ill feeling making Dylan stand anxiously by the door, not having moved by it.

Edward glances up, "James, a tracker, is hunting Bella." He explains as Bella moves over to the dresser. "His coven interfered when we were playing baseball." He now fully looks at Dylan "We need to get you both somewhere safe."

Dylan was taken aback, frowning while holding the empty duffel bag closer to her chest. "Um, what does this have to do with me? Why do I have to come?"

"Because your scent is stronger than Bella's, it's better if you come with us." Edward clarified as Bella was back at his side, quickly stuffing whatever she could in the small bag.

The blue-eyed girl was about to agree but stopped herself. "Wait, what about Dad? We can't just leave him here?!" She whisper-shouted, making sure Charlie wouldn't hear outside the door.

"Rosalie and Esme will look after him." Edward's response was quick and stern.

"What am I going to say to him? I can't hurt him." Bella stressed, trying to hold herself back from crying.

"You just have to." Edward laid a hand on her forearm. "I'll be down the truck." It was the last thing he said before going up to the window.

Pressing her lips together, unsure of the idea, Dylan reached out to her twin who was making her way to the door. "Bella-"

"I packed extra clothes, let's go." She responds coldly, before twisting the knob, she looks back at Dylan. "Let me do the talking." Dylan sighed as a retort, watching Bella open the door.

Charlie steps back, seeing his oldest daughter rush towards the bathroom, ignoring the worried look he gives. Dylan trailed a second behind her, having the bravery to look at Charlie. "I'm sorry Dad," She whispered sadly, before entering the small lighted bathroom.

She blinked a couple of times trying to stop her eyes from watering. Wanting to forget the look Charlie gave her. Dylan then maneuvered around, gathering a few necessities as Charlie started asking Bella questions.

"Did he hurt you?" Charlie asked, leaning on the doorway of the bathroom.

"No," Bella answered, taking a glance at him, after opening a cabinet.

Charlie stood there with a confused expression. "Break up with you or something?" He guessed unsure of his question.

After getting what she needed, Bella closed it. "No, I- I broke up with him." She answered while walking out. Re-entering her room again before closing it.

"I thought you liked him?" He points out.

The younger Swan left the bathroom and walked into the hallway. Holding a now slightly weighted bag, containing things she needed. She stood there, watching Charlie sigh, before he looked her way. "Dylan, what's going on?" He asked the girl softly.

Silence filled the air as she pondered on what to say. She swallowed before speaking, "It's just something we have to do Dad, that's all I can say, I'm sorry." Dylan's voice was quiet, as she reasoned to him.

The girl couldn't bear to look at Charlie, who looked helpless and almost desperate. She felt guilt arise, feeding the fuel to the rapid-fire along with Bella's excuses. Dylan didn't know if she had the strength to go along with the plan she was brought in. However, if she wanted to keep Charlie safe, she had to go with it, even if it meant leaving him hurt in the end.

Bella opens the door, hastily walking out. "That's why I have to leave. I don't want this, we have to go home. It's better for me and it's better for Dylan." She explained further, heading to the bathroom again, and grabbing a couple more items of what she needed.

"Home? Your mom's not even in Phoenix." Charlie said, frowning at her words.

"She'll come home, we'll call her from the road," Bella states, coming out of the room and motioning to Dylan to follow her down the stairs.

Charlie stands there annoyed by her stubbornness, putting his hands on his hips. "Both of you are not going to drive home right now." He said sternly, "You can sleep on it, if you guys still feel like going in the morning, I'll take you guys to the airport."

"No, we'll drive, it'll give us more time to think." Bella explains as the three of them move down the steps in a hurry, "If we get tired, Dylan and I will pull into a motel I promise."

Dylan decides to stay by the front door, as Charlie follows Bella into the kitchen. It broke her heart more to hear their Dad desperately trying to make things better than they already were. Convincing Bella he would change to make living here more bearable, for both of them.

What Bella said next, broke Dylan's heart even more, making her completely change her mind about leaving. "Like what? Like, watch baseball on the flat screen? Eat at the diner every night steak and cobbler? Dad, that's you, that's not me." Bella argues before moving past him.

Dylan immediately stopped Bella from walking further. "Wait Bella," She pleads, standing in front of the older twin. "There must be some other way around this." The girl whispered as Charlie walked towards them slowly.

The taller girl shook her head, annoyed, and pushed past. "Dylan, we don't have time! We need to go now." She turns to the door, hand already on the knob, ready to twist it.

"No! I'm not leaving Bella!" Dylan argued back, and the older glanced over her shoulder, in surprise. "You're taking it too far." She gently spoke, reaching out for Bella's hand. "Stay, we'll figure it out together." The girl begs as Charlie stands with them.

"Bella come on, I just got you guys back, I got you back." He consoled, crossing his arms over his chest.

Dylan watched as Bella took a moment to gather herself, "Yeah and you know if I don't get out now, then I'm just going to be stuck here like mom." Opening the door, Bella turned to look at Dylan, doing her best to avoid the devastation on Dylan's face. "You want to be stuck here like mom was? Be my guest Dylan."

The words struck Dylan in ways that would forever change the relationship with her twin. How could she say those words? Saying the most hurtful words their mother used when she left Charlie. She could've said anything else, anything, but why retell what their mother told them? What good would come out of it besides hurting the people who care about you?

It almost felt like she went numb, the feeling of Bella ripping her hand away caused a pang in her chest. The sound of the door slamming rang loud in her ears. Dylan pressed her lips together, trying to quiet the sob that wanted to erupt from her mouth. Her vision went blurry as tears flooded her eyes, seeing the figure of Bella getting into the truck; through the window of the door.

When she heard the engine start, Dylan lost it. The aching sobs escape and tears fall freely, drenching her face. Her shoulders trembling as she clenches the duffel bag in her arms, trying to find some common ground. Head down and eyes closed shut, Dylan let out a shaky cry.

The feeling of arms engulfed her into a comforting embrace, trying to console the crying girl. Dylan leaned into the touch, as Charlie put his hand on the top of her head, stroking her hair softly. The older Swan tried his best to soothe his daughter, also feeling devastated not only by the fact of Bella leaving but the piercing words soaking deep into his heart.

As Dylan's cries began to calm down, Charlie let out a breath before speaking. "I'll make some calls to your mom about Bella and figure out what's best not only for her but for you too."

Dylan quickly lifts her head, frowning. "What's best? Dad, what do you mean by that?" She panicked, her blue eyes swelling up with tears again.

Charlie looked down at her sadly, "If you want to move to Jacksonville with your mother I understand-"

"No!" Dylan protested, shaking her head while looking down. "I don't want to move to Jacksonville, I like living here, I like living here with you!" The girl cries out, not believing what she is hearing.

He brought Dylan back into his embrace, trying to hide his eyes which were tearing up as well. Her reaction made him feel even more crushed and heartbroken. Charlie immediately regretted his choice of words, he couldn't think straight, his mind clouded with Bella's cruel remark.

"Why don't you try and get some sleep, hm?" Charlie suggested, glancing down at her.

Dylan slowly leaned away and nodded, her sight on the floor. Charlie held out a hand for her to give him the bag, and she did so without protest. He slings the strap on his shoulder, "I'll let your mom know what happened, everything will be okay, just go ahead and rest alright?"

Without saying anything, Dylan looked up at her father, nodding once more before making her way to the stairs. Every step felt like a heavyweight, dragging her down into the depths of despair. The route to her room somehow felt longer, making Dylan let out a heavy breath when she reached the top step.

When coming across Bella's room, she felt like crying again. The empty feeling creeping in made her look away from it. Dylan sniffed and opened the door to her room, closing it when she was inside.

The light-headed brunette leaned on the door, trying to calm herself. Not noticing the large window beside her desk is widely opened, letting in the chilled breeze. She shivered when becoming aware, looking to see the curtains flowing as the wind invited itself. It caresses her tear-streaked face, as she treads over to close it.

Pulling down the top rail, she promptly stopped her movements. Remembering the window being closed as she had always kept it that way. That's when she saw broken splinters of wood scattered on the seal and on the floor beneath her shoes.

Dylan's body froze, the raise of goosebumps forming on her body. The hairs on the back of her neck stood up, the feeling of being watched looming over her. Her breathing quickened while she slowly turned to face the room. The relief never came as her blue eyes glanced around finding nothing.

She slowly made her way towards the door. Afraid to make any noise or sudden movement. Her body screamed at her to run, while her mind warned cautiously not to. When she was a foot away from the door, a dark chuckle surfaces in the air. In fright, Dylan lunges, forward to the handle, but a pale hand emerges from behind, roughly pulling her back.

Before she could let out a scream, everything went black.

I'd always skip this part of the movie because it's heartbreaking seeing Charlie get hurt. 😭

We also reached 2.18k! Thank you so much, you guys! As a way to celebrate, I planned something special for the prom scene. 🫶🏻🫶🏻
