05. Old Legends

──•~❉᯽❉~•──

A COUPLE OF DAYS HAVE PASSED SINCE THE INCIDENT. Everything was sort of back to normal, well at least for Dylan. There were times when Edward would make side conversations with Bella, whenever they bumped into each other.

The other day when they had a class field trip, Dylan had noticed the pair talking while they all walked through the greenhouse. She wasn't able to hear the conversation from being pulled away by Jessica. When she asked Bella about it later that day, she didn't say much and Dylan left at that.

In history class, Rosalie ignored the Swan girl altogether. It made her sad, knowing whatever happened between Edward and Bella, somehow resulted in the blonde icing her out. She tried making conversation, cracking jokes here and there, or talking about the gossip that was flowing around school.

But, nothing worked and Dylan had a strong feeling that Edward had something to do about it.

Jabbing a fork in her salad, Dylan expressed a laugh at something Eric had said. Shoving a mouthful of lettuce into her mouth. It was lunch period, a normal day, as well as it can be.

"You guys, we should go to La Push tomorrow. I heard the surf is gonna be killer." Jessica announced, fixing her headband.

"I'll be able to show off my surfer skills and prove all of you clowns wrong." Eric declared, mimicking a surfing pose.

"And finish that rematch that we didn't end up finishing right Jess?" Mike raised a playful eyebrow at the girl, who visibly blushed.

She raised her hand, pointing a finger at the table. "You're going down." Jessica teased, making Mike smile.

"Wait, why are you trying to prove them wrong?" Dylan asked, pointing at Eric with a curious smile. This made the group snicker and he rolled his eyes in return.

"Apparently," He quoted with his fingers. "I'm the weakest link at surfing. Which I think is no longer true, considering I've been practicing." Eric bragged with a smirk.

Another snicker was heard, "Yeah we'll see about that." Jessica challenged. Along with Mike nodding in agreement.

Dylan raised a hand to Eric, "Rooting for you." She encouraged him as Eric happily smiled and high-fived her.

"Appreciate the support bestie." He raved, to which Dylan giggled at that as she continued to eat her salad.

"Do you surf?" Mike asked, and Dylan glanced up from her plate, swallowing the last bite of food.

"If you don't have a board you can totally borrow one of mine." Jessica quickly said after him, moving her fork around her food.

The Swan girl winced, "Sadly I don't surf. Not a great swimmer." Even though she loved the ocean, Dylan didn't find the time to learn, especially since she was busy doing other sports back in Arizona. However, when she did go swimming, it was only in shallow waters.

"Well you're in luck because it just so happens that I don't surf either, It'll just be you and I then. We can share a Twizzler-sized bucket." Angela piped up next to her, softly smiling at the girl.

"While we gossip," Dylan added, while they both laughed. A bag was suddenly dropped beside her making her look up to see Bella. "Hey," She greeted her twin.

"La Push, baby. You in?" Eric asked the girl with a smile.

"Should I know what that means?" Bella questioned, confused.

"La Push Beach down at the Quileute Rez. We're all going tomorrow." Mike informed her. "Yeah, there's a big swell coming in," Jessica added.

Eric abruptly stood up from his seat, "And I don't just surf the internet." He said, doing another surfer pose. Mike stood up with him, copying his stance.

"Eric, you stood up once, and it was a foam board," Jessica commented.

Dylan couldn't help but chuckle. "He's a pro surfer now Jess, remember? He practiced." Mike snorted from his spot at what she said.

"Dylan," Eric suppressed a hurt expression, clutching his chest. "I thought you had faith in me?"

The light brunette playfully smiled. "Eric I do, I'm just teasing." This made the Asian boy sigh in relief.

Dylan looked from beside her, seeing Bella standing there, looking like she had something running on her mind. The girl tapped her hand, gaining her attention. Dylan nodded towards her, in a way of asking if she was alright. Bella only smiled and patted her hand, letting the younger twin know that she was okay.

"There's whale watching, too. Come with us." Angela pleads after the bickering is calmed down between Eric and Jessica. Dylan grabbed Bella's arm silently begging with her eyes to agree.

"La Push, baby. It's La Push." Eric dragged the letters, as Bella stole a cucumber from Dylan's plate.

Bella smiled, "Okay, I'll go if you stop saying that, okay?" She chucked, taking a bite of the green vegetable. The table full of teens laugh at her comment, agreeing with her.

Dylan let go of Bella's arm, allowing her to walk away to get some lunch. The girl is pulled into a brighter mood now that Bella agrees to go. Looking forward to spending more time with their group of friends.

"Hey Dylan, can you give this to Ms. Hernandez, since you have her next period? I forgot to give this to her." Dylan looks over at Angela, who pulls out a book from her backpack.

She nodded and took it from her. "Yeah, I can give it to her." The blue-eyed girl promised, leaning down to pick up her bag from the floor.

"Yo Dylan, What's uh, what's going on with that over there?"

Dylan looked over from putting the book into her bag. Tyler moved to sit next to her. "What?" She questioned, confused, until lining her vision of what he was pointing at.

Her sight lies on Bella and Edward having one of their conversations, by the salad bar. The entire table fully paid their entire attention to the pair. Dylan shrugged her shoulders, closing the zipper of the bag and dropping it on the floor by her feet.

Mike hopped off the empty table he was on and sat by Jessica, his eyes never leaving the rare sighting of the Cullen boy talking to his crush. "Yeah, actually what's that about?" He pressed, and Dylan could feel jealousy radiating off him.

"I-," Dylan paused her words, she didn't understand what was going on either. Bella wouldn't tell her anything and that worried her. "I have no idea." She finally spoke out after a few moments.

"I wonder what they're talking about?" Angela gushed out, expressing curiosity, and that made Dylan look back at the two.

"Probably nothing interesting." Jessica discarded the girl's question rather harshly. Frowning at the unfinished food in front of her.

The sound of waves pulling into the shoreline rang in Dylan's ears. The smell of the sea air filled her lungs as she sat in her friend's van, next to Bella. She had forgotten how beautiful La Push beach was.

It's been so long since she's been here. The lingering memories that appear in her head of the fun times she had. And most of them were with Jacob. Racing each other along the shoreline, playing with other kids from the reservation, and seeing who could find the coolest seashells.

She loved spending time here and the beauties that came with it.

"So, I keep thinking that Eric's gonna ask me to the prom, and then he just doesn't," Angela spoke out with a sigh.

"He probably will Angie. Maybe he wants to find the perfect time to ask you." Dylan looked over to her as Angela nodded, thinking.

"You should ask him," Bella suggested, turning to face her. The girl shook her head, completely disagreeing with the idea. "Take control. You're a strong independent woman." Bella stated.

Angela grew conflicted with the idea but also felt encouraged by it. "I am?" She asked, and Bella nodded. "Yes."

"Screw the norms, ask him." Dylan agreed, confidently. Her friend smiled at that before Jessica came over and asked to help zip up her suit.

From her peripheral vision, Dylan saw three figures walking their way. Making her look and a smile immediately light up her face. "Hey, Jake!" She greeted brightly, causing Jacobs's grin to widen.

"Dylan, Bella" He greets back, leaning against the open door of the van.

"Guys, this is Jacob." Bella introduces him to the girls, as Dylan slides open the door more, inviting Jacob over so he can sit. The three of them greeted each other before he sat beside her.

"What are you, like stalking us?" Bella playfully said.

Jacob scoffs "You're on my rez, remember?" Dylan laughs at Bella as she realizes how dumbfounded she sounded, nodding sheepishly.

"Are you surfing?" Jacob asked, grabbing a Twizzler that Dylan gave him. Bella shook her head, "Definitely not."

The blue-eyed girl snorted from in between them, "Imagine you surfing Bella?"

Bella chuckles, taking a bite of the rope candy. "One word, disastrous." Dylan giggled, fidgeting with the candy in her hand.

The boy beside Dylan leaned closer, "And I suppose you're not surfing because you still can't swim. Am I wrong?" He whispered lightly. A playful glint in his warm brown eyes.

She stared back at him, narrowing."I despise how much you know, Jake."

He chuckled, while the girl smiled before laying her head on his shoulder. Breaking the small gap of how close their faces were. He smiled at this action, his cheeks tinted a pink color.

"You guys should keep Bella company. Her date bailed." Jessica speaks to Jacob's friends and Eric gasps out. "What date?"

The younger Swan looked at him blankly. "Who do you think?" She questioned him. Trying to give him clues, he only blinked and Dylan mentally facepalmed.

Jessica laughed almost in a mocking way. "She invited Edward."

"To be polite, that's it." The older twin defended herself, trying to make it seem like Edward didn't reject her invitation.

"I think it's nice she invited him. Nobody ever does." Anegla's soft voice saves the awkward situation Jessica created.

"Yeah, 'cause Cullen's a freak." Mike intervened, meaning every word he said.

One of Jacob's friends scoffs a laugh, "You got that right."

Dylan sits up, letting out a breath. "I honestly agree with Angela. I mean doesn't he reject everyone? Jess, you should know a thing or two about that?"

Even though the younger Swan had a playful smile on her face, her words struck a sting at the Stanleys girl's heart. And she meant to do that. Jessica got quiet and averted her eyes to the floor. Finding herself being put in her place by the Swan girl's words.

"You guys know him?" Bella asked the two native boys, standing there. Taking interest in the topic of the Cullen boy.

"The Cullens don't come here." He answered her question. His tone was laced with pure dislike of them.

The atmosphere turned more awkward and Dylan tried her very best to talk about anything. Which worked while Jessica and the boys went off surfing. Soon after, Eric came back from his 'surfing', looking defeated. Jacob then suggested that the three of them take a walk along the shoreline.

Dylan caught up with Jacob, in the years of her being gone. It felt nice talking to her friend again. He made her laugh, smile, and a lot happier. Their shoulders would often touch on how engaged they were.

He was still the same person she became best friends with, all those years ago. Always has a bright smile on his face and his happy aura never leaves his side. Jacob felt like her safe space, where she could completely be herself around him. Dylan didn't have to limit how much she talked, in fear of annoying those around her. Because with Jacob, she could talk for days on end and he would gladly listen to every word Dylan would say.

"What did your friends mean about, you know, 'The Cullens don't come here," Bella asked Jacob who walked between them.

He smiled briefly, "You caught that, huh?" It was silent for a moment like he was debating whether he should continue. "I'm not supposed to say anything about it."

"Hey, I can keep a secret." Bella flirted and it made Dylan cringe. She bent down and picked up a seashell, trying to hide her displeased expression.

Jacob laughed, feeling flustered, "Really, it's just like an old scary story." He shrugged it off and picked up a sunray venus shell from the ground. Putting it in the pocket of his jacket.

"Well, I want to know." Bella flirted again, using a sweet voice.

It took everything in Dylan to not say anything, from how Bella was taking advantage of the situation. She looked over at Jacob, seeing him making up his mind before pressing his lips into a thin line.

"Okay, did you know Quileutes are supposedly descended from wolves?" Jacob gazed over at Dylan, smiling. So she wouldn't feel left out of the conversation.

Bella shared a look of disbelief, "What? Like, wolves?"

Jacob nodded, "Yeah. Well, that's the legend of our tribe." Bella frowned, not understanding how that connects to her question. "So what's the story about the Cullens?"

Dylan picked up one last colored sea shell, finding interest as well in the story Jacob was telling.

"Well, they're supposedly descended from this, like, enemy clan. My great-grandfather, the chief, found them hunting on our land. But they claimed to be something different, so we made a treaty with them. If they promised to stay off Quileute lands, then we wouldn't expose what they really were to the palefaces." He playfully nudged Dylan's arm, specifically at the word, paleface.

The girl rolled her eyes knowingly. "Hey, I've been trying, okay?" She said, referring to the attempted tans she tried getting in the summertime.

"You're fine the way you are Dylan." He resorted, trying to encourage her to embrace her paleness. Which was successful and earned him a smile spreading across her face.

"I thought they just moved here," Bella questioned once more.

"Or just moved back." Jacob theorized, and Dylan noticed Bella thinking more again.

A sudden scream startled the three as two girls ran past them. However, that didn't seem to stop Bella from asking more questions. "Well, what are they really?"

Dylan let out an annoyed sigh, tired of Bella's growing obsession with the Cullen family. "Bella, I think that's enough history lessons for the day." The girl reasoned as Bella lightly scoffed.

"It's just a story Bella." Jacob also agreed.

As the three continued walking, it had gotten quiet. Bella had kept to herself after the story Jacob had told. Dylan also stayed silent, but it wasn't because of that.

Jacob glanced at Dylan, frowning. "What has gotten you so quiet?"  He joked, although was concerned, knowing she had never been this quiet before.

The girl stopped counting in her mind and looked at her friend. "Huh?"She was confused until registering what he asked. "Oh!" Dylan laughed, grabbing ahold of the collected seashells from her pocket. "Just seeing how many shells I have and how I'm going to beat you" She expressed cockly, showing what she picked up.

Jacob chuckled and looked ahead. His face soon turned into curiosity when spotting something sticking up from the delicate sand. Stopping in his tracks he squats down as Dylan does the same. While Bella watches from her spot, hands tucked into her jacket pockets.

"Hm, looks like I won." He smirked, holding out a dark spotted-colored Miter Shell.

Frowning, Dylan laid out her collected shells on the sand, recounting them. "I have eight, you?"

"Eight." He answered with a nod, gesturing to his collection that lay neatly on the floor.

The younger Swan shook her head, they're tied, but he had the prettier shells. "No, absolutely not. Bella, who do you think should win?"

Dylan asked the girl, who now bent down with them. Bella bites down her lip, brown doe eyes darting back and forth. "I think," She said a minute later, looking at them with a smile.

"I think Jacob takes this one." She announced the winner as she stood up.

Jacob laughed with a cheery smile while Dylan's head hung down in defeat. "This is so unfair." She mumbles, standing up. "I'll get you next time Black."

He chuckled, and returned to his height, smiling down at her. "You're on Swan."

Dylan's pouting slowly turned back to a smile. She playfully bumped her shoulder against his as the three walked back to where they came from. Abandoning their sea shells.
