36 • What Are You?

unedited

Hyuna

My mind was a mass of darkness, swirling and engulfing me whole, binding me from anything. I did not realise it until now. The heavy drapes that were covering the lights from emitting were pulled and the rays spilled in, letting me see things that I never knew existed in the dark mind of mine.

Things were getting clearer and clearer to see.

I opened my eyes just to see the high ceiling and this time I saved the energy by not freaking out. I knew I was not home, back at my small apartment, where the cracks on the yellowish ceiling were prominent than anything. This, was a place that was awfully familiar to me, yet somehow not.

I felt the stare before I saw it. Turning to my side, I met his gaze and instantly I felt calm. The buzzing in my stomach was oddly comforting and I found myself inching closer to him. He watched me silently until I was only a hairbreadth away.

I reached up and he eyed me curiously, I placed a hand on his cheek and he sighed softly.

“You’re real.”

“As real as I can be.”

His voice was deep and smooth, the sinful butterflies made themselves known, fluttering inside my stomach, making me insane. It was weird that a man could make me feel this way. I have had a handful of relationship before but they all ended because I felt guilty for no reason. I felt ashamed.

So why was it that his mere presence has managed to turn me mad?

Why did I feel like he belonged here, right here with me?

It was confusing. It was like something was chained behind my head for a long time, buried deep behind the memories and pain that I have known all my life. I felt like he was the key to everything, and honestly if it was the case, then I am fine with it.

Oh god, have I become completely crazy?

“I’m not afraid, why’s that?” I said in a little voice, and due to our close proximity, I am sure he heard me. His eyes turned a bit darker as he placed a hand over mine.

“You have no reason to be afraid, love. Not with me, you don’t.” He spoke a bit louder than before, his face mirrored his voice; he was showing too much emotion than I can comprehend.

Startled with his reaction, I sucked a deep breath and made a move to pull my hand back, but it seemed to be a mistake as he growled and tightened his hand on mine, stopping me.

You have no reason to be afraid,” He repeated, “I will not let any harm to come your way, not when I just got you back.”

There were soft shuffling in the room, and so I sat up, eyes instantly catching the moving figure of a girl who was quietly tidying the already spotless room whilst trying to move around the room without waking me up.

Something tugged at the back of my memory and I said the name that first appeared in my mind.

“Juna.”

She stopped whatever she was doing and turned to me, head bowed in a respectful manner.

“I am sorry if I woke you up, my Lady.”

I waved my hand in dismissal. “No, I was already waking up, anyway.” I swung my legs from the comfort of the duvet and my feet immediately touched the soft carpeted floor.

Something clicked in my mind and I turned my head around at the empty bed. Did I dream about it?

“Where is, um…”

“The Prince is at his office. He asks me to escort you to the kitchen after you have freshened up.” She curtseyed again, and motioned to the adjoining room which I remembered as a huge bathroom with its own Jacuzzi.

I silently nodded and followed her, seeing that she had already prepared me a bath. I realised when she said ‘freshening up’ she meant by bath and shave. It was a relief that she left me alone to do my stuff, because I was sure I saw it somewhere in a historical drama that there were a maid to do everything for a royal or noble lady and that include washing. Since there was a Prince living in this place who was so keen on calling me his, I was nervous if any of those would happen.

When I finished, I shrugged on a robe and patted my hair dry whilst walking out of the bathroom. I was met with Juna waiting at the front door, with a dress and a pair of new undergarments.

“Uh, you scared me.” I mumbled, halting my steps into a stop. She shot me a small smile and we stood staring at each other for a few seconds.

“Um, is that for me?” I motioned to the stuff she had on her hands and she nodded, taking a step toward me. “Uh, I think I better dress myself.” She wordlessly handed me the clothes and I ran back into the bathroom before she changed her mind.

I walked back out and she was still there, laying stuff on the vanity. I walked to her, eyes wide at the countless make-up and accessories. She pulled me onto the chair and started her job, poking my face with her torture devices.

“Please wait here, miss. The prince will come in a moment.” She curtseyed and left, without as much letting me to thank her. I sighed, looking around at the room. Everything here was enormous, and I felt myself being dwarfed by it. My eyes landed on a painting, and my feet moved instantly. Out of the countless frames, I was pulled by this one the most. I was mesmerised, shocked.

The girl was sitting with a poise, her hair was held up in an elegant up-do, red lips contrasted with her pale skin. Her red dress matched her lips, and flowed gracefully on the ground. I sucked a breath, she looked so much like…

“You’re here,” I heard someone talk. Surprised, I twirled around and being the klutz I am, nearly fell on my tangled feet. Who am I kidding? I failed ballet.

A hand grabbed on my elbow, supporting me from falling on my face, saving me from an eternal shame. I gulped when his skin cold skin touched mine. It should be uncomfortable, I mean a human should not be that cold, but I crossed that thought instantly. If he was one of Daesung’s friend, then he must not be an ordinary human too. I’m still looking forward for a talking dog though.

I trailed my eyes up, past his broad chest onto his smirking face. Dang, this fucker was hot, and he knew it.

“Y-yeah, Juna brought me here.” I pulled my hand slowly and stepped back, looking at anywhere but him.

“Not as feisty anymore, huh?”

I looked up. “What?”

He shrugged innocently and walked toward the dining table. “Nothing, now shall we start with this lunch? Or brunch.” He chuckled, pulling a chair out and turned to me.

Oh…

I speed-walked to him and sat on the chair. When I was seated, he lowered his face next to mine and whispered, “I’m hungry.”

I gaped as he walked to his place and sat, chuckling along the way.

As soon as he was seated, a familiar middle-aged lady came in with a tray, Juna trailing after her. She placed the food in front of the prince and Juna did the same with mine. The smell invaded my nostrils and I let a soft groan. I was undoubtedly hungry, and I knew the food here was heavenly.

Well if I was going to be here for a while, better start emptying their fridge.

“Enjoy your meals, Your Highness,” the woman bowed, and to me she smiled, “Miss.” Then she strolled out, followed by Juna.

It was quiet as we started with our lunch, only the sound of our cutleries clinking with the plates were heard occasionally. He was taking his time eating, cutting the meat into smaller pieces, while I cut it into four parts and forked it into my mouth. I was right, it tasted good.

As I was eating, my focus was on him. But it seemed like I was not that subtle at all when he spoke.

“Staring is rude.”

I nearly choked on my food and he sighed, watching me as I washed the food down with the juice.

“W-who said I was staring?” I said, coughing a little.
He raised an eyebrow and I laughed nervously. “Actually I was meant to ask…”

“What are you?”
