Prologue

Justice's slow dancing feels unbearable to some. That is why most choose vengeance, thinking she's a much better dancing partner. It all started when Apollo mocked Eros with cruelty and pride.

Both gods were famous for their outstanding talents in archery, but Apollo –also the god of medicine and knowledge– considered Eros, the god of love, to be too young and immature to be handling such a powerful weapon. After all, Apollo was far older than him and also an oracular god. People would come from all over the world to learn from him what their future held. It was believed that Apollo could heal people as well as cause disease by shooting them with his arrows, while Eros was only capable of spreading love and hate with his.

Therefore, when Apollo bragged of his superiority and vast experience, he implied that Eros' godly talents were useless compared to his. Apollo's sneering wouldn't go unanswered. Eros swore revenge.

Thus, one day Eros fired two arrows with a naughty plan in mind. He would prove Apollo wrong with the same weapon Apollo was thought to master beyond anybody else in the world.

Eros' first shot was a gold arrow, which struck Apollo and made him fall in love with Daphne, a naiad nymph of striking beauty whose father was the river god Peneus. His second shot was a lead arrow, used to strike Daphne and make her hate Apollo forever.

Thus, a dramatic, unrequited love affair ensued. No matter how elaborate and insistent Apollo's romantic advances were, Daphne rejected him over and over again. Besides the power of Eros' lead arrow in her, she had vowed to remain unmarried and untouched by any male, but Apollo wouldn't accept "no" for an answer.

The power of mad love and hate clouded their judgements. Eventually, an animalistic yet pitiful chase took place.

As a last resort during that chase, Daphne begged her father to free her from Apollo in a hopeless prayer shot into the sky. Her desperate plea echoed in the air until it reached her father's ears. In response, Peneus used his powers to metamorphose Daphne into a laurel tree. So, by the time Apollo was holding her, it was already too late. The metamorphosis was complete. She gladly sacrificed her body as the only way to escape from Apollo's sexual advances.

As a consequence, Apollo felt torn due to loss and vowed to love Daphne forever no matter what. Therefore, he used his powers of eternal youth and immortality to make Daphne's laurel leaves evergreen, and he would wear some on his head like a crown to show his undying love for her.

An undying, toxic love she had not sought to begin with. All because two male gods with too much pride wanted to hurt each other's feelings and feel superior over the other.

Despite the worth of this story, people chose to forget about it as time went by, considering it a mere myth from a long long time ago. My life is an echo of that past.

Centuries came and went. The words on the pages gathered dust as much as a lack of veracity.

Until 2141.

"Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it."

George Santayana
