𝐂𝐇𝐀𝐏𝐓𝐄𝐑 𝟓: Colette - math
I do not like this subject.
They call it "math".
I call it "mental abuse to humans". Well, actually I didn't make that up, I've read that sentence somewhere in the internet.
But now I can't get it out of my head anymore.
"Colette. What about you?", asks Miss Scene, our math teacher, suddenly.
"Pardon?", I ask, looking up in surprise. The blackboard is filled with white numbers, the chalk shrunk.
When did that happen?!
Miss Scene sighs: "Any ideas what the correct solution might be?"
Ehm ... no.
"Maybe seven?", I guess slowly.
I hear someone laughing, my face starts to get warm.
"We were talking about the question if the root of two is an irrational number. Seven is not really fitting."
"It is.", I say quickly.
"Excuse me?", says Miss Scenic, frowning.
"Oh, non, I mean: The root of two is an irrational number.", I correct myself. The laughing gets louder.
"Good.", Miss Scenic smiles at me, before she turns around and walks back to the blackboard again.
That was ... close.
I can feel my heart beating. Faster than it's supposed to.
I slowly start panicking.
Not now, not now, not-
I start searching for my pills, but I can't find them, my thoughts run around in my head like a carousel or something like that.
I'm starting to feel dizzy.
Not good, not good, not-
And then it all stops. My head feels like it is filled with soft feathers, my heart beats in normal speed again.
Shit.
Slowly, between all these weird numbers on the chalkboard, words are appearing.
Don't think about something dumb or mauvais now, Colette
The first sentence is readable. And, of course, everyone is reading it.
I can feel their looks on me, most of them are confused. But some are worried.
I look slowly up, to the boy next to me.
His name is Matthew. Matthew Green.
He lives in the village, and he's one of those popular rich kids. He never really noticed me, but I've definitely noticed him.
I spent hours thinking about him when Homecoming was coming up, but in the end he went with this random cheerleader.
Those kids don't talk to girls with stipends like me.
But right now he looks at me.
Surprised.
Shocked, maybe.
Matthew has no idea what is going on. Just like most of the others.
Oh my god, Matthew Green is looking at me!
The new sentence appears. Miss Scenic is just standing there in complete disbelief.
"Can I go to the bathroom, please?", I say shyly, trying to ignore the fact that my thoughts are slowly getting presented to everyone in this classroom right now.
I have to get to Mrs Erlingham. Now!
"Alright.", she says, still with this shocked expression.
I run out of the room, crossing the empty hallway.
Oh I love this school!
I'm serious, it's so pretty!
I've watched the first season of "Riverdale" with Gwendolyn and Olivia (my roomies), and I must say: Riverdale High kind of reminds me of our school.
It has this classic American charm, that I just love!
My family and I used to live in a small village, very close to Paris for a long time and in my old home in Arizone, I've really missed that belle ville.
But here, it's just ...
"Miss Laurent, why aren't you in your class?"
I turn around and start talking immediately: "Mrs Erlingham, thank god! It's happening again! My thoughts are written on the blackboard, and I can't ... I just ..."
I can't control it. How would I, I don't even understand why it's happening.
"Calm down, Miss Laurent, It's gonna be okay!", Mrs Erlingham says. "Alright?"
I nod. I can't speak, I can feel the tears in my eyes.
One word and they'll be flowing all over my cheeks.
"Good. Now, please go to your room, take your time and one of your pills there, okay?"
I nod again.
"See you later then.", the headmistress says, smiling at me before she quickly walks into the classroom I just ran out.
