Chapter 2: Keefe

"Just watch what you eat," Elwin concluded, "and bring Ro next time. I have need to have a special talk with her." Keefe nodded. Ro had given him a slight dose of Gurgle Gut when he sang another verse of The Ballad of Bo and Ro, and he'd been puking ever since. After Elwin helped him, they went out to clean up the mess he made while walking to the Healing Center. Keefe was taking a few extra vials of some dark blue elixir, in case Ro decided to prank him again. He was just tucking it away in a pocket near his ankles and turning toward the door when it burst open. A girl immediately toppled in, knocking him over. When he fluttered his eyes open, he found himself staring into a pair of honey brown eyes.

Sophie. Everything about her was perfect. Her wavy blonde hair that fell a little past her shoulders. Her rich brown eyes with little golden flecks in them. The way her mouth curved when she smiled. Her soft, airy laugh. He could go on and on, but it would've been really awkward lying there with Elwin watching them, so Keefe scrambled back. Sophie seemed to be having a little more trouble than him standing up quickly, so he offered his hand. When Sophie took it, Keefe blushed slightly, but quickly managed to slow the blood rush.

"What happened this time, Sophie?" Elwin asked, gesturing to a cot for her to take a seat.

"It's the verminion. It finally found a chance to ambush me," Sophie replied.

"Where'd you get hurt?"

"My right leg. I heard something crack, but Edaline said it was only a little damage."

Keefe snickered. "Leave it to Foster to find a way to get hurt again."

Elwin ignored him and flashed a purple orb of light around Sophie's right leg. "Hmm, there seems to be some spots of bone that are empty. You're staying here tonight," he decided. He handed her a small vial of marrow regenerator, and she gagged it down. Keefe tried not to laugh as her face went through different stages of displeasure.

After he made sure Sophie took the marrow regenerator, Elwin left for his lab to brew up some more foul elixirs. Keefe was glad none of them were for him.

Keefe walked over to her cot. "You always get hurt. Are you seriously that valuable? If we were playing chess, you'd definitely be the queen—dominating the entire board."

Sophie teasingly asked, "Then who's the king?"

Keefe ruffled his hair. "Me, of course. If anyone takes me down, you're all coming with me. Even you, my queen." He immediately blushed at what he said, and he noticed Sophie doing the same. Keefe turned away. "Well, see you tomorrow, Lady Fos-Boss."

"I'll be waiting," Sophie whispered as Keefe closed the door.

Sorry it's a little short! I tried to make it longer, but this seemed like a good stopping point. I'm doing two in a day, since I forgot to update yesterday. Hope you all enjoyed it!
