I scooped Reuben up and exited the room, but went slowly. I didn't want to tell Jesse. But I had to. Somehow. I looked up at Jesse's pale face and I felt my courage falter. How could I do this? I took a deep breath and nervously sat beside him.

"So?" He asked, his hands shaking a little. I reached out to hold it and he looked down at our hands silently. "Reuben.. he has to be euthanized." he sat back and swallowed. I turned away, the light in his eyes... I shook my head a little, trying to clear my thoughts. Reuben gave a feeble bark and licked Jesse's hand.

"When?" Jesse asked quietly and I told him the date. "It's for the best, Jesse. You don't want him to suffer, do you?" I reasoned and he shook his head.

"I just..." Jesse stood up and I handed Reuben to him. Reuben looked up at Jesse with trusting eyes and buried it's head into his chest. "Just spend time with him." I replied quietly.

And that was what all I said.
