The Alley of Awe

Professor McGonagall, as previously stated, arrived in July. Upon seeing the witch through the peephole in the door, Lily excitedly let her in, and then instantly rushed out in a quest to get Severus.

"Miss Evans, what are you doing?" The professor asked curiously.

"Getting Severus," Lily replied, pulling on a coat, and then her shoes.

McGonagall was astonished.

"But he lives so far away!"

Lily turned to the woman.

"You said he could come with us," she said fiercely.

"And so he shall," the professor said softly. "We can go by Floo. I've fixed your two fireplaces up for the day."

The three Evanses shared a look of confusion. Petunia was out for the day with a friend. She quickly explained.

"By using this powder," she took a jar out of pocket, "we can be transported to your friend Mr Snape's house through means of your fireplaces. Due to the fact that yours are obviously owned by non-magical people, or Muggles as we call them, I've had to connect them to the Floo Network for one day."

"Ah," Mr Evans nodded, understanding. Mrs Evans looked worried, but nodded nevertheless. Lily appeared extremely eager.

"I'll go first," she declared, walking towards the professor.

"Take a good handful – yes, good, very good. Now toss the powder onto the flames, step into them, and state your destination clearly."

Lily followed the professor's directions, and vanished from sight.

"Now, your turns," McGonagall commented, handing the jar to Lily's parents.

They took a decent handful each, and followed their daughter through the fireplace, before McGonagall stepped into the flames, too, and disappeared with a crackle.

Stepping into the Snape's house was a huge surprise for all four travellers. Severus stood, speechless, in the living room, but otherwise appeared to make sense of their sudden arrival. Lily was looking around with a curious air.

"Severus, is that your father? Shouldn't we wake him? Isn't he coming with us?" Lily asked, indicating the snoring man on the sofa.

"No, I mean yes, I mean no," Severus gabbled nervously, eyeing them all as they surveyed the mess that was his living room. "Yes, it is my father, and no to the other two."

"Oh." Lily seemed surprised, but continued to look round, now more quietly.

"My mother's not coming," Severus told Professor McGonagall, who seemed disappointed by this news. "Migraine."

"Do you need to inform her of your leaving?" Inquired the professor.

"No," muttered Severus.

"Him?" She pointed at his father.

He shook his head sharply.

"Very well. Lead the way, Miss Evans. The destination is The Leaky Cauldron."

Severus may have been surprised when they entered a gloomy tavern, McGonagall thought interestedly, but he did not show it in any way. The Evanses, on the other hand, were gobsmacked, and seemed to be waiting for an explanation.

"This is the pub that connects Diagon Alley to Muggle London. When we have finished, I will take you through that way to show you where it is for any future visits."

Lily was positively bouncing on the balls of her feet in joy, waiting impatiently for them to enter the alley. McGonagall, however, had one more thing to do first.

"Morning, Tom."

Now, Diagon Alley was everything Severus and Lily could have hoped for, and more. Lily, dragging Severus, ran way in front of her parents, looking round with limitless enthusiasm, and exclaiming, at the top of her voice, about the many attractions she could see.

"Miss Evans, the bank first," McGonagall directed. "You will want to exchange your money into wizarding currency," she told Mr Evans.

The bank was fairly busy, but McGonagall, earning respect from her fellow shoppers, managed to get the Evanses to the front of the queue, and once both they, and Severus had Galleons, Sickles and Knuts clutched in their hands, they left to visit the many shops. Severus mainly watched Lily buy everything, as he was borrowing almost all he needed from his mother, and had been embarrassed when the teacher asked him why he was not standing on the stool to have his robes fitted.

The latter was, in fact, receiving a large amount of attention. The Transfiguration professor was a feared aspect of Hogwarts life, and was forever speaking to past and present pupils as they roamed the alley.

"Professor McGonagall," Ollivander said quietly, as they entered his shop. Lily was the most excited about this part. "9½ inches, fir, dragon heartstring, wasn't it?"

"Indeed it was, Mr Ollivander," McGonagall responded. "I am here for Mr Snape and Miss Evans."

"I see," was all the strange man said, his pale silver eyes roving over them all. "Miss Evans, if you would go first."

Lily went through about three wands before she found her match in a wand of 10¼ inches, made of willow. She had twirled it with irritation, annoyed that it had taken so long, and then had produced flowers from the end of it. Within seconds it was wrapped up, packaged and carefully cradled in Lily's arms.

Severus was slightly frightened of the old man.

"I know just the one for you," Ollivander mused, scanning his shelves with shaking hands. He glanced back at Severus briefly before bending down to the floor and removing a dusty box from the bottom shelf. "Nine and three-quarter inches, made of elder with a thestral hair core. Not for most." He handed it over. "This wand will see death, lots of it," he added, and only Severus heard.

The boy pondered, unsettled, over the wand maker's words, but decided to ease his superstition by waving the wand. He'd never felt anything stranger, more immense, more powerful, in his life. The surge of magic he felt beneath his fingertips caused him to feel pins and needles, and then the magic flowed down the wand, reaching the tip. The ensuing explosion was, there was only one word for it – amazing.

A force field seemed to spread from the wand, shattering everything nearby. A vase smashed on the floor; the table splintered, shards going everywhere; the windows imploded, and the wand itself went red hot, causing Severus to drop it on the floor. He stared at the mess, dumbfounded.

"What_?" McGonagall started, but didn't finish, as Ollivander had his own wand out.

"Reparo," he muttered. The room was instantly mended. "I think you may have found yourself a brilliant find, Professor."

McGonagall had her mouth open, and shut it at these words.

"I think so," she managed, finally, weakly.

*****

A.N. I originally thought I would have Lily waking Tobias up, but decided against it. That will happen in a future chapter, be warned.

McGonagall's job to do was simply to greet Tom, if anybody thought it was more than that.

I have decided to use Evanses instead of Evans', just so you know. If anybody is a grammar expert (and I guess Wattpad is the place to find them!) please inform me of the correct choice. I will be changing the spelling of previous chapters soon.

Surprised by Severus' wand choice?

Thank you for reading and PLEASE COMMENT!!
