Chapter 1
“One more chance in this game , mortal. One last chance. If you win, you will be free to stay with her , if you don’t , I’ll be making sure that neither one of you will find each other.” Death said in a harsh and cool tone as the dead soul stood in front of him. He was a rare kind of soul, the searching soul. Searching souls had always been searching, whether something or someone they have missed in their former lives.
“I’ll be with her this time. That I am sure of.” He said to Death , his face of determination never seemed to wear off. He’s been looking for her for centuries, millenia even . Maybe this time, he could finally find her.
Death rolled its eyes before opening a portal for him to enter, “Final chance. Good luck.”
He smiled to death and stepped inside the portal.
“Ugh fuck.” Levi grumbled in his bed as he looked to the closed window of his bedroom , groaning, he sat up from bed, covering his bare chest with a blanket. He looked over to the digital clock that stood on top of his side table, its bright red time illuminating a small space of his bed.
03:13 A.M
“Not these fucking thoughts and memories again.” He continued to grumble as he got out of bed and looked around. It was dark inside, he could make out some of the silhouettes of the objects of his room, the cold wind from his air conditioner brushed through his skin as he shivered in response. He grabbed for his blanket and placed it over his shoulders, the rest dragging on the floor as he stumbled across the room to his door. Reaching what he believes is the door, he opened it, switching the lights that were on the wall. Its brightly luminescence illuminating the hallway , his eyes blinked several times as he hissed, trying to get his eyes adjusted to the sudden brightness.
Leaving the door of his room open , he walked to his kitchen, opening the fridge, its light inside illuminating it.
“There’s not much food. And it had to be three AM when the urges hit.” He grumbled, slamming the door of the fridge shut as he walked back inside his room.
He grabbed his dark blue with a huge print of wings on the back of the jacket , he placed it over himself and zipped the zipper up, grabbing his wallet and placing it in his blanket, walking out the door , closing the door behind him. Grabbing his keys and slipping a pair of slippers and a mask, he closed the door of his condominium , locking it behind him.
The hallway of the floor was bright, with the lights on and the rest quiet. It was three in the morning , afterall. The people who are probably alive are cramming students, screaming babies, exhausted parents of said screaming babies, and importantly, those writers writing at 3 am.
Levi sighed as he continued to walk till he reached the elevator of his floor, pressing the button. His foot tapped against the floor as he looked at the door and then to the ceiling, until the door opened. Stepping inside and closing it , he pressed the Ground Floor button as the door slowly closed in front of him. The short trip down made him feel uneasy. No he doesn't like them, he just feels uneasy. Alone. It's like the only thing he could hear is his heart beating and his breathing until he heard the elevator door and opened, stepping outside of it as the door closed behind him.
He only saw the workers who were working the midnight shift. Leaving through the door, he walked the dim lights of the street. Almost all stores in the surrounding areas were closed , little to no people around , the street lights were dimmed as he walked to the closest and still open convenient store.
He stopped as he heard a dog barking, looking around, he saw a small black dog with a leash on barking at him, growling as he got closer to inspect it.
"Where's your owner?" He asked the dog as he knelt down , a few meters away from the dog. The dog continued to bark at him. He looked around for their owner but didn't find them, sighing he sat down on the chair beside the still yapping dog. It seemed to calm down as it looked up to him and went closer, catching on his scent.
"I hope your owner didn't abandon you, " He told the dog, looking at it before looking at the window of the store, “You’re too useful to be abandoned.”
He sat on the chair , along with the dog. It's still angry at him but didn’t mind him . The door opened and a woman in a Pine green hoodie stepped out, a plastic bag held on her hand. She went closer to the dog and held onto the leash.
“Are you the owner?” He asked her, standing up and walking to the door of the store. She looked up and nodded her head.
“Yeah, I’m his owner. Thanks for watching over Rocco.”
“Porco?”
She laughed and shook her head , “No, Rocco.” She corrected, rolling her r. Levi laughed and nodded his head ,
“I’m sorry that I misheard the dog’s name.” He apologized , his hand grabbed on the door handle.
“It’s fine. Happens a lot.” She answered , Rocco looked in the direction of the streetlight and pulled on his leash, she smiled nervously as she started to walk away .
“I’ll see you around!” She said behind her back and started to run, her dog leading her on the way. Levi sighed and opened the door to the store.
The store was pretty much empty, in terms of people , with only himself, the person working their shift , and the security guard, he was taken off his temperature and used the alcohol bottle spray for his hands. He went to the drinks and opened the freezer, the immediate cold air escaped and he shivered as his hands grabbed onto a bottle of Beer , closing the door after. He also grabbed a donut before heading to the counter, placing it in front of the counter, he then paid for it and left the store, walking back at the dimly lit streets again.
The way back to his condominium was just as quiet as his walk to the store, with the exception of Rocco the dog and his female owner.
