Zoom in the Shadows
Caitlin wakes up, gasping for air.
"Snow!" Harry jumps awake.
"I'm fine." She assures him, pulling her knees to her and leaning over. She takes a deep breath and looks at him, giving him a weak smile. "I'm fine."
They sit in silence for a moment before Caitlin turns to hop off the bed.
"What are you doing?"
"I rested. You said I could help." She reminds him.
He sighs and follows her into the cortex. "We've been trying to think of a way to take out more metas at once. Or, ideally, all the Earth 2 metas at once."
Caitlin stands in front of the board Harry's been working on and looks at the dead ends him and Cisco have been working through.
"Woo!" Cisco bounces into the room, Wally and Henry close behind. "Only lost two windows tonight." Cisco cheers.
"Cisco." Wally says, putting his hands on his shoulders to calm him down. Cisco looks at Wally's stern face and turns to see what he's looking at.
"Caitlin?" Cisco breathes out.
She smiles weakly at him and nods.
Cisco runs up to her, throwing his arms around her, and this time she's able to hug back. She buries her head in his hair and he bites his lip to keep from crying.
"What happened? How'd you get out? Are you hurt?" Cisco rambles, pulling back and looking her over. Caitlin half-heartedly laughs at his excitement and shakes her head. "You smell, by the way." He says with a grin. She chuckles and he pulls her in for another hug.
She looks at Wally and smiles, then at Henry. She wants to smile, but she knows why he's here. She knows he just lost his son. She can't bring herself to smile at him.
"C'mon kid, what do you say we get you checked out?" Henry says, smiling at her and walking her into her lab, gently holding onto her arm.
No one is saying anything to her, not sure where her head is at and not wanting to overwhelm her. She wishes someone would say something. Anything about Barry. About the metas. About something, other than just watching Henry and waiting for him to tell them what's wrong with her. She watches as Cisco runs out of the room.
Out in the hallway, Barry gets off the elevator, exhausted from the night. He only gets two steps before Cisco comes running into the lobby.
"Barry!"
Barry raises his eyebrows waiting for him to continue.
"It's Caitlin." Cisco says, slightly out of breath.
Barry's eyes widen. "What about her?" He asks, terrified of what Cisco is gonna tell him.
"She's here." Cisco says with a small smile.
Barry races off into the cortex. When a gust of air blows past Caitlin she gasps and flinches back. She looks up and sees Barry, a face of disbelief that matches hers, staring back at her.
"Cait." He breathes out, disbelief turning into happy relief.
Caitlin gets off the bed and walks up to him, looking him over to make sure he's there. He's careful not to startle her so he just stands still. She reaches out and touches the emblem on his chest, the one she's been holding. Her breathing as shaky as her hands. She looks up at him and he gives her a comforting smile.
"You-you're...he said you were dead." She mutters to him.
"I'm here, Cait." He says, gently reaching out for her hand, keeping his eyes locked on hers. "I'm okay."
Caitlin throws her arms around his neck, jumping up to him. He quickly wraps his arms around her, keeping her up, and buries his head in the crook of her neck. Barry lowers her, allowing her feet to touch the ground, and pulls her closer. He looks up at his dad behind her, his eyes asking how she is. Henry just shrugs, not having been able to see much yet.
Barry pulls away, pressing his head to hers for a moment. He nods and she goes back to sit on the bed. Barry moves to stand by Harry, Cisco, and Wally who are all still watching. Barry is finally able to take in her clothes, her wrists, her face. Her sunken cheeks and the circles under eyes. He swallows, floored by every thought entering his head of what she could've been through this last week.
"A little dehydrated and undernourished." Henry says. He puts some medicine on her wrists and wraps them. "But other than that, you're good to go." He assures her.
She smiles at him. "Fluids and rest?"
He laughs and nods. "Doctor's orders."
Caitlin stands and walks into the back of her lab to grab some medicine.
"How is she, really?" Barry quietly asks his dad.
Henry sighs. "She's weak. Shaky. A good meal and sleep will go a long way." Henry turns to him. "You don't know what she's been through, so just be patient and gentle. Physically she may be fine in a day or two, but mentally...emotionally, she may need some time. Give her that."
Barry nods. "As much as she needs."
Caitlin walks back out, a couple of bottles of pills in her hand. "Ready?" She asks, smiling weakly at Barry. He walks toward her and bends to pick her up, but she backs away. "Could we, uh...maybe not run?" He tilts his head in confusion but smiles and nods anyway.
They take Caitlin's car, which had been at S.T.A.R. Labs since the night she was taken, and drive back to her and Barry's home. They both walk in for the first time in a week. Caitlin takes a deep breath and smiles. Her and Barry walk into the kitchen and eat whatever they have that hasn't gone bad. Caitlin picks at her food, not feeling overly hungry even though her stomach says otherwise.
She heads up to the shower, throwing away the clothes she takes off. Barry walks in and starts to back out, thinking she might want to be alone.
"No." Caitlin stops him. "Stay, please."
Barry strips down and gets in the shower with her. She stands still, letting the water run on her, her face expressionless. He gently washes her, kissing her shoulder, her head, her cheek, wherever he can reach.
Caitlin stands behind him, washing his back. She leans her forehead against his back, wrapping her arms around the front of him. "I thought you were dead." She says softly.
Barry turns , pulling her to his chest. "It's a long story. But I'm here. I'm okay now." He moves her head away, tilting her chin up to face him. "I promise."
Caitlin raises up to kiss him. Her lips touch his gently, slowly pressing firmer against them. Barry wraps his arms as tightly around her as he can. She pulls away just enough to breathe through the water running between them and pushes him back, wrapping her hands around the back of his head. She pulls back after a few moments, taking a deep breath and resting her head against his chest.
"Bedtime." She whispers, smiling weakly up at him.
He chuckles and nods. They dry off and put on clean clothes, crawling into their bed. Caitlin stretches out, enjoying the space and the comfort of the bed. She curls up next to Barry, wrapping one arm around him and resting her head on his chest. He leans down and kisses the top of her head. Both quickly fall into the best sleep they've had in a week.
***************************
"How is she?" Cisco asks Barry in the labs later that afternoon after they've all gotten some sleep.
"Shaken." He says, trying to think of a word for it. "She seems fine, but sometimes, she just zones out."
"All things considered, that's good." Harry says. "She'll come around."
Barry nods, taking a deep breath. "So, how's it coming on the meta problem?"
"We have a maybe solution that may or may not even work and has a lot of problems." Cisco groans. "That magnet we used on Girder...what if we made something similar that would send out a pulse that affects all people with dark matter in their systems. Knock them out."
"But that would knock out all metas, not just the ones fighting, me included, and who knows how many people have residual dark matter from the explosion that aren't even metas." Barry points out.
"Like I said, a lot of problems." Cisco says.
"Well, hey. It's a start. We can work from that." Barry says, trying to sound optimistic. "I'm gonna go check in with Joe to see what's going on with them."
Barry checks in with Caitlin before he goes and heads to Jitters to meet with Joe and Singh.
Caitlin starts looking over all of Harry's and Cisco's notes about what Cisco has called the 'metapocalypse'. The metas' powers, the approximate numbers, the spread of violence, etc., are all laid out.
A quick flash of blue lightning catches her eye. She turns quickly in her chair but sees nothing. She takes a deep breath and turns back around, shaking off her paranoia. When she turns back around, Zoom is standing in front of her desk, mask on, blue lightning sparking around him. She can hear him breathing deeply through the mask.
Caitlin screams, backing away from her desk and standing out of her chair. As quickly as he appeared, he's gone, as if she blinked him away.
After taking a few deep breaths, she takes the anxiety pills she grabbed earlier this morning out of her purse and fumbles to take one. She closes her eyes and takes a few more deep breaths.
"Caitlin."
Caitlin jumps and turns around to see Jessie. "Oh, Jessie. What's up." She asks trying to calm herself.
"Sorry, didn't mean to startle you. I would ask how you're feeling, but having been there I know that'd be a stupid question." She gives her a sympathetic smile.
Caitlin shakes her head. "I'm fine. Really, just a little on edge I guess."
Jessie nods. "I was wondering if I could ask for a favor."
"Ask away."
"Could you, um, test me for dark matter?" Jessie hesitantly asks. Caitlin tilts her head in confusion. "When my dad set the particle accelerator off again to give Barry his powers back, I was hit by the blast. I thought maybe I was affected."
"Um, yeah. I'll test you." Caitlin says, trying to wrap her head around what Jessie just said. "Your dad did what?"
Jessie fills Caitlin in on what happened with Barry, just what little she knows, while Caitlin checks to see if there is any evidence of dark matter in her cells or if her DNA has been altered in any way.
"Snow, what are you doing?" Harry asks, walking in after Caitlin takes a blood sample from Jessie.
Caitlin starts walking back to the desk, not looking at Harry. "Breathing. Walking. Occasionally swallowing, but not much. My mouth has been a bit dry." She says while organizing her samples.
Harry sighs. "I meant with my daughter." He says, sounding annoyed.
Caitlin smirks. "Testing for dark matter."
"And why would you have her doing that?" Harry pointedly asks Jessie.
"Because I was hit by a dark matter explosion."
"Which we're gonna talk about, by the way." Caitlin scolds Harry who looks guiltily at her then back at Jessie.
"I had to have been affected." Jessie defends.
"Not necessarily." Caitlin cuts in. "I was hit by it last time and, other than losing my job and being recruited to a meta-crime-fighting team, I wasn't affected." She says sarcastically.
Harry smirks at her than looks back at Jessie, walking up to stand next to her. "You are not a meta human." He smiles at her. "You are, however, a young woman with a genius level IQ."
Jessie sighs and rolls her eyes but smiles.
"Now, get back to the house. It's gonna start getting dark soon."
Caitlin smiles at their interaction, glad that they're talking again without arguing. She starts running the samples just in case. A streak of blue lightning causes her to look up. She gasps and drops a vial on the ground. Her hands are shaking, and she closes her eyes.
"Not real." She mumbles to herself.
"Snow."
Caitlin opens her eyes to see Zoom gone from in front of her. She turns to see Harry staring worriedly at her.
"You alright?" He asks softly.
She smiles unconvincingly and nods. "I'm fine."
"He's not here." He assures her, putting a hand on her shoulder.
Caitlin looks at Harry, her eyes glazed. She swallows and nods. Barry runs into the cortex. Caitlin turns to him but turns back to Harry, giving him a look that asks him not to tell Barry.
Harry jumps when Caitlin squeals and he turns to see her trotting excitedly to Barry who is holding a large coffee for her. Cisco walks into the room to prepare for the night.
"What's the plan?" He asks, slumping in his chair.
"No progress with the dark matter pulse idea?" Barry asks.
Cisco shakes his head.
"What's the dark matter pulse idea?" Caitlin asks.
"Ramon and I thought we could target the metas with some type of pulse, but we haven't...quite figured it out yet."
An alarm going off draws the team's attention away. Barry, Harry, and Caitlin all look to Cisco who is sitting behind the control desk.
"Cisco!" Caitlin calls to him to get his attention. He snaps back to attention and looks at the alert.
"Mercury Labs." Cisco informs them.
Barry runs out to see what's going on.
"What'd you see?" Caitlin asks Cisco, assuming he zoned out from a vibe.
He narrows his eyes. "I saw a bird." He mumbles.
Caitlin looks at Harry who just shrugs.
"Guys, Mercury is collapsing!" Barry yells through the comms.
"Collapsing like...weeble or Jenga?" Cisco asks. Caitlin looks scolding and wide-eyed at him.
"Jenga." Barry says, uncertain.
"Is there any sign of an earthquake in that area?" Caitlin asks.
"In Central City?" Cisco questions.
"No. This is Zoom." Harry says darkly.
"Everyone is out." Barry informs them.
Barry runs back in, suit covered in dirt. The moment he comes to a stop another alert sounds.
"CCPD." Cisco says, looking cautiously up to Barry.
"Zoom." Harry says, looking at him.
A shiver goes down Caitlin's spine. Barry's jaw tightens and he looks at Caitlin for only a second before he runs out.
*********************
"I never had a murder board." Jay says when Barry enters the room.
Barry looks around his lab that he hasn't been in since Zoom took over CCPD. He sees his desk moved up against the window, a burnt piece of his suit laid on it. Chains dangling from the edge with open shackles on the ends. The same ones he saw in the lab. He knows Zoom's trying to get in his head, and he hates to admit that it's working.
"Never needed one. I got a front row seat to my mother's murder, while you got whisked away." Jay turns to him. "Too delicate, I suppose." Jay chuckles. "Not just a hologram after all are you, Flash."
"I'm not here for a conversation. Why'd you call me here? I know it's not to fight." Barry snaps.
"Oh? It's not?" Jay smirks.
"No. You prefer to have others do your dirty work for you while you sit up here and watch."
Jay chuckles. "You'd be more honorable, wouldn't you? See, Barry, that's your problem. Morals. You always have to do the good thing. Be the hero." Jay looks to the window.
Barry notices and walks to the window to look out. He sees the metas starting to walk out onto the street. More specifically, he sees a meta in a black suit, standing outside the building across the street, smirking at him.
"While you're busy being a hero." Jay says, causing Barry to turn to him. "I'll be winning."
Barry runs out to the building next door. The woman in the black suit turns and, now up close, Barry realizes she's yet another doppelganger of a friend, Laurel Lance. Laurel was a good friend of Felicity and Oliver's who tragically died not long ago.
"Zoom said I should be expecting you." She says, circling him.
"If he told you anything about me, you should look much more afraid."
The woman scoffs. "I'm not the one who should be scared."
"So, what do they call you." Barry asks.
"Black Siren." Before Barry can ask why, she leans over and screams, a sonic wave coming out of her mouth.
Barry falls to the ground groaning in pain. The ringing in his ears is deafening.
"Barry get out of there. Anything over 200 decibels will kill you." Harry says through the comms.
Barry gets to his feet just in time to get punched by Siren. He falls back, still disoriented by her scream. Barry looks up at her preparing to scream, but she's thrown to the side when a S.T.A.R. Labs van backs up into her.
"Hop in, Slugger." Henry says, opening the back doors.
"Where to?" Wally asks from the driver's seat.
"The labs. We're ending this tonight." Barry says, resting against the door as Wally speeds off.
**********************
"Siren brought that building down." Barry says as he storms into the cortex. "She's gonna bring half of Central City down by morning if we don't stop her."
"What are you gonna do, muzzle her?" Harry asks.
"No." Barry snaps. "This has to stop. We can't last another night of these meta attacks."
"What do you suggest we do?" Harry snaps, tired of feeling helpless. "Sleep gas the entire town?"
"Rounding them up with everyone asleep would be better than trying to do it now. It's like running the gauntlet out there right now." Barry sighs. They all stay silent for a few moments.
Caitlin perks up and runs out of the cortex. The boys all look at each other in confusion. She runs back in with Hartley's gauntlets. She hands them to Cisco.
"Can you figure out how to knock Harry out with these?" She asks.
Cisco stares at her. "I mean, gladly, but why?"
"Because, people on Earth 2 vibrate at a different frequency, right?" Caitlin asks. "So, if we figure out what frequency and intensity would knock Harry out..."
"I think I'm smelling what you're stepping in." Cisco says, staring at the gauntlets.
"Yeah." Harry says, walking up to them.
"Can we have it ready tonight?" Barry asks.
"Should have it ready within the hour." Harry says.
Harry and Cisco run out of the cortex to their workshop. Barry walks up to Caitlin and wraps his arm over her shoulder, kissing her on the side of her head.
"I love you." He says.
She smiles. "I love you too." They stand there for a second before Caitlin clears her throat. "So, uh...when were you gonna tell me about you disintegrating into the speed force?"
Barry coughs and steps away from her. "Well, y'know, you already knew about me 'dying' so I figured-"
"That I knew you dissolved into another dimension? Yeah, no. That wasn't the first thing that came to mind."
Barry chuckles and starts slowly backing out of the cortex. "It's a great story."
Caitlin smiles at him. "I can't wait to hear it." Barry winks and runs out.
Caitlin laughs and starts to walk toward the workshop. Blue lightning speeds by her and Zoom stops in front of her. She lets out a scream and jumps back, tripping over her feet and falling to the ground. She curls up, covering her face in defense. "No, no, no." She mumbles to herself.
"Caitlin!" Cisco shouts running down the hall. He sees her curled up on the floor. "Caitlin." He says softer, kneeling down beside her. "Hey," he gently pulls her hands away from her face. "It's me, it's me. Breathe."
"I'm sorry." Caitlin squeaks out. "I just, I saw-"
"I know." Cisco says. "Harry told me." Cisco rubs the sides of her arms. "He's not here."
Caitlin swallows and takes a deep breath, burying her head in her knees. "I see him...everywhere."
"Okay, you literally just escaped a psychopath who kidnapped you, so I think whatever you're feeling right now is normal." Cisco defends. "I know I'm not supposed to ask about it, but if you ever need to talk about what happened in there...you know you can talk to me."
"I know, Cisco." Caitlin smiles weakly at him.
"We're gonna get through this." He says, pulling her in for a hug. "I promise."
