Need for Speed

Caitlin is cuffed to the same desk, the other desks moved further away from her so she can't reach them. She is expecting to be scolded but she looks up to see Jay gazing at her. She turns away, not liking the admiration in his look.

He walks up to her and leans down to look at her. "You have to break to see who you truly are." He smiles, reaching to touch her face. She flinches back, but still lets him. She realized how little pull she still had over him when he ignored her at Jitters and right now, she was the only thing that had kept Joe and Barry alive. "You're almost there." He says softly.

He runs off.

Caitlin turns and looks out the window at the night sky. At least I'm back on Earth 1. She thought. At least I'm not in that cave.

"What more do you need?" Harry scolds. "I told you he would kill those officers. I told you he would employ more metas. What more do you need!" He yells.

Harry looks a mix of angry and desperate. Cisco is standing, zoned out in the corner. It's not his call. He already knows his answer. Wally and Jessie are sitting at the control desk. They came to check on everyone after they saw what happened at Jitters on the news. Joe is standing and staring solemnly at the ground, not sure how to feel after having lost so many people at Jitters. Henry and Iris are the only two arguing.

"We don't know what's going to happen." Iris defends.

"I do. He is going to tear this city apart. Faster than he did mine." Harry argues. "And right now, there is nothing we can do about it." He turns to Barry who hasn't said anything since they got back. "But he can."

Barry looks up, staring at Harry. He nods.

Henry walks over to him. "Son, you don't have to do this. It doesn't have to be up to you to save everyone."

"It does." Barry corrects. "I'm the one who opened the black hole that showed Zoom this Earth. I'm the one who brought him back. I'm the one who gave up my speed. This is all because of me. It has to be me. And Harry's right. This is how we save Caitlin."

"Barry, this could kill you." Iris reminds him, walking up and putting her hand on his arm. She looks up at him, a stern look on her face.

"One of the cops killed tonight...he has a son. Same age I was when mom was murdered." He looks over at his dad. "Now another kid has to grow up without a parent. No more. I need to do this." Barry turns to Harry. "How does this work?"

Harry leads all of them into the room where he's been working on the machine that will help Barry get his speed back. He explains the process. Barry will be hooked up to the machine. It will inject him with the same chemicals he was exposed to the night of the first explosion. Cisco will use the weather wand to draw static from the sky and direct lightning to the machine. The accelerator will go off and...if all goes to plan, the Flash will return.

"That's a lot of things that can go wrong." Joe comments.

"And we're sure this isn't going to affect anyone outside of S.T.A.R. Labs?" Barry confirms. Harry nods.

"The explosion will be contained to right here."

"Will we be affected?" Cisco asks. "Caitlin and I were right outside the accelerator last time and we got-" He gestures showing him and Caitlin getting blown back from the explosion.

"We should be safe." Harry says, still focusing on his calculations.

Henry sighs. "I still don't like this."

"I have to do this, dad." Barry says, walking up to Henry. "I'm the Flash."

"The Flash is so much more than just his speed." Henry reminds him.

"But none of those other things matter if I don't have the speed to use them." Barry argues, smiling weakly.

Barry walks over to have Harry show him how it will work and get him set up. Cisco finishes up on the weather wand.

"Do you trust him?" Henry asks Cisco and Joe.

"I trust that he thinks he knows what he's doing." Joe says.

"She would trust him." Cisco answers. "I trust him."

Harry comes back, Barry fully strapped into the machine.

"Ramon. Roof." Harry instructs.

Cisco runs out with the wand and up to the roof.

"Ready, Allen?" Harry asks. Barry takes a deep breath and nods. "Then here we go. Injecting the chemicals."

"Injecting?" Iris asks.

"He was exposed to a combination of chemicals from his lab that night." Harry explains.

"So you're injecting them directly into him?" Iris angrily and skeptically asks.

"Yes. The conditions must be repeated exactly."

Barry is twitching, writing in pain from the chemicals entering his body.

Henry is squeezing the rail on the platform they're standing on. Joe is biting his knuckle. Iris is staring, horrified, at Barry.

"Now, Ramon!" Harry shouts into the comms.

Cisco raises the wand into the air. Lightning surrounds the building and strikes directly on the roof. Cisco jumps when the lightning catches the wand and is redirected to the antenna.

*****

Back at CCPD Jay's attention is caught by the lightning he sees out the window. He notices that it's only striking over S.T.A.R. Labs.

"No!" He shouts, running out of the room.

Caitlin shifts as much as she can to get a better look. She sees the single continuous lightning strike just over where S.T.A.R. Labs would be.

"No." She breathes out. "Barry..."

*****

Harry turns on the accelerator as lightning hits the antenna. Barry screams out in pain as his body absorbs the impact. Iris, Joe, and Henry watch as Barry's body turns red, lightning surrounding it. Harry watches Barry's scans on the computer.

"Turn it off!" Iris screams.

Harry looks up to see Barry yelling, his body....disintegrating. Pieces of his suit are ripping off. His skin is burning. A final burst of the accelerator forces the group to look away from the blast. When they turn back, Barry is gone.

Harry turns off the machine. A tear drops out of Iris's eye. Joe steps forward to double check what he's seeing. Henry's hands are shaking, still gripping the rail. Cisco runs in.

"Did it work?" He reaches the front of the platform and sees that Barry is gone. "Where'd he-" He turns and sees Iris's and Joe's face. He turns to Harry.

"What did you do to my son?" Henry firmly shouts.

Zoom enters the room. He reaches down and picks up a large piece of Barry's destroyed suit.

"You thought you could give the Flash back his speed?" He taunts. He chuckles. "Well done. You killed him instead." Zoom runs out.

"No. No, he's not." Cisco walks up to the machine. He looks around it and runs back to the computers. "He could've run somewhere. He could-" He tries to track Barry but finds nothing.

Iris is sobbing into Joe's chest. Henry is trying to catch his breath. Harry keeps staring at the machine as if, any minute now, something is gonna happen to show that he didn't just kill Barry.

*****

Zoom stops in front of Caitlin. She turns away from the window and looks at him.

"They killed him." He says coldly.

Caitlin's breath catches in her throat. "You're lying." She spits out.

Zoom takes his mask off. "I'm not, Cait." He says softly, giving her an apologetic look.

Jay tosses the piece of Barry's suit that he grabbed from the labs to her. She stares at it, her eyes glazed over.

"B-" She chokes out only a letter.

She reaches out for the emblem in the center of the fabric and pulls it off. The edges of the fabric are burned and there is soot all over the suit. The emblem is partially melted and dirty, but it's his. She can tell. Her hands are shaking. She weakly rubs the soot off the lightning bolt. Her mouth is slightly open, her eyes watering so much she can barely see. Her breathing is hitched.

"You're lying." She squeaks out, her voice small. "You're-they wouldn't. He-" She chokes again and feels the burn in her throat. She tries to swallow it but can't.

"He's gone, Cait." Jay says, kneeling down next to her.

"No!" She says, pushing him back. "No, he can't be." Tears are pouring out of her crazed eyes. "He-" She can't finish. "Barry." She sobs out softly. "He can't be gone." She whispers to herself. She curls up against the desk, hugging her knees to her chest and burying her head in them, the emblem enclosed in her hands and pressed to her face. She sobs, her body shaking, into her knees.

Jay tries to reach for her, but she jerks away. "Don't touch me!" She snaps.

"Cait, I had nothing to do with this." Jay says calmly.

She scoots back as far as she can.

"Barry chose to do this. He chose to put himself at risk." Jay argues. She isn't saying anything. "He knew he wasn't strong enough to stop me. Don't you see, Caitlin. There is no victory without power."

Caitlin looks up at him. Anger and disgust on her face. Tear marks down her cheeks, and eyes still glossy.

"Sometimes it is given to you." He holds his hand up, vibrating it. He stops and smiles at her. "And sometimes," he turns to the main entrance to the station where more and more meta humans are starting to gather, "you have to take it." He puts his mask on and stands, walking into the other room.

Caitlin looks in horror at the amount of metas in the other room. She backs away, around the desk so all she can see is the wall and the window. She drops her head again, burying the emblem into her chest, and letting another tear drop down her cheek.

*****

Harry lets out a deep breath and walks back to the computer. "Jessie, come down here." He says into the comms to the time vault. "Jessie." No answer. "Wally?" No answer.

Joe and Harry run out of the room. They run down the hallway and past the time vault. In the lobby in front of the elevator they see Jessie and Wally both laying on the floor.

"Jessie!" Harry shouts, kneeling next to his daughter.

Joe kneels next to Wally. "Wal?" He says softly, noticing Wally waking up.

"Jessie." Harry begs. "Jessie, honey, wake up." She's breathing and he can feel a pulse, but she isn't waking up.

Harry carries her into Caitlin's lab and lays her on the med bed. Wally wakes up completely and follows Harry. Joe runs back into the other room.

"Henry. Wells' daughter. She needs you." Joe says.

Henry doesn't move.

"Henry." Joe squats down next to him. "She needs a doctor."

Henry takes a deep breath and slowly gets to his feet, walking out of the room. Cisco is still wandering around the machine. He hoists himself up into the part of the machine that Barry was connected to. He sees a ripped piece of the suit. He reaches out for it.

Cisco looks around and sees smoke, lightning flashing in and out of it, surrounding him. It's loud, but in a muffled sense. He looks ahead of him and in the distance, he sees Barry, just standing in a dense part of the fog.

"He's alive." Cisco breathes out when the lab reappears around him.

"What?" Iris asks. She stands up from the platform and walks toward him.

"He's alive, Barry's alive. I just saw him."

Cisco runs out of the room, followed closely by Iris.

"He's alive!" He announces when he walks into Caitlin's lab.

"What?" Henry asks, turning away from Jessie. Harry looks up too.

"Barry. I vibed him. He's in some vortex-like thing. But he's alive."

"Vortex?" Harry asks. "What kind of vortex?"

"I don't know. It was all cloudy. Sounded like being in a storm. There was lightning flashing everywhere." Cisco describes.

Harry's eyes go wide. "He's in the speed force."

"The speed force?" Henry asks. "Can we get him out?"

Harry looks down at Jessie.

"Wells," Joe starts. "I feel you. As a parent, I do. But there is nothing you can do for Jessie right now. Let Henry help her. You help Cisco figure out how to get Barry back."

Harry looks at him, and back down at Jessie. He looks at Henry who is looking back with pleading eyes. He nods. "Ramon, let's get to work."
