Calls and Confessions
Caitlin looks up at the attorney. "Does this mean," she starts.
"Everything. It's all yours." Mr. Turk clarifies for her. "Except 50% of S.T.A.R. Labs and its assets, which will go to Mr. Allen here. You two can settle that on your own or we can sit down and determine how you would like to divide the assets." He flips through the papers in his folder and hands another paper to each of them. "Here is a list of all of S.T.A.R. Lab's assets." He watches as they both scan the papers, their eyes widening the further down the pages they go. "Would you like to determine ownership on your own or,"
"Yes." They say simultaneously.
"Alright." He takes a clipped stack of papers out of his folder and slides it over to Caitlin. "Dr. Snow, here is a list of all properties included in Dr. Wells' estate."
Caitlin scans the paper and puts it down, closing her eyes and taking a deep breath. Barry turns to her and reaches to put his hand on her knee, giving it a reassuring squeeze and keeping it there. She turns to look at him, confusion and exhaustion clear in her eyes.
"I don't know what to do with this." She says quietly, staring at her desk.
"Well the only thing you have to decide is whether you are keeping it or not. Mr. Allen, I informed you of the circumstances surrounding your inheritance of S.T.A.R. Labs?" Barry nods. "Good. Dr. Snow. Like Mr. Allen, Dr. Wells' has left you a video message on this drive." He hands her an old flash drive. She stares at it for a few seconds before reaching out to take it from him, carefully, as if grabbing it wrong might make it explode. "When you have finished watching it, a notification will be sent to my office. Upon receiving, I will finalize the paperwork passing ownership to you and Mr. Allen. If I do not receive the notification by the end of the week, the properties will pass into receivership and you will bare no further responsibility."
Caitlin doesn't say anything. She's staring at the drive.
"Well, I will take my leave." He lays a card down on her desk. "All the information you need should be in this folder." He puts his hand down on the folder he's left on her desk. "Give me a call if you have any further questions. Either of you."
He nods to Barry who looks up at him and nods back, giving him a half-smile. "Thanks." Barry says quietly, staying seated next to Caitlin.
Mr. Turk stands and walks out.
"Cait?" Barry turns, scooting his chair closer to her.
"Hola, salut, hello, and good afternoon, dear friends!" Cisco shouts entering the room.
Caitlin looks up, a judgmental look on her face. "One day you're gonna enter a room full of people and not say a word."
"Yes." He says, sitting down. He leans forward. "My funeral. But that's just because they won't hear what I'm saying." He whispers. "What's this?" He asks, picking up the large folder.
He opens the folder and starts flipping through it. He looks up at Caitlin.
"All mine." She says, feigning excitement.
"Remember when we discussed you upping your budget?" Cisco says, raising his eyebrows at her. "Now you have zero excuse not to." He lays the folder down and notices her fidgeting with a drive. "And that?"
She looks up. "Um...video message. Apparently." She turns to Barry. "You got one too?"
He nods, pulling a newer looking drive out of his shirt pocket and handing it to Caitlin.
"Alright old man." She says, eyeing his shirt pocket and narrowing her eyebrows.
He continues looking at the drive that she's now holding.
"Have you watched it yet?" She asks.
He shakes his head. "Can't, uh...can't bring myself to do it."
"What if we watched it together?" She suggests, looking under his head to make eye contact. She gives him a soft but genuine smile.
He looks up, staring at her for a moment before nodding lightly. "Yeah." He says softly.
"Cisco." Caitlin says, catching his eye and nodding toward the door. He stands and goes to close the door, locking it behind him and walking back, pulling the chair he was sitting in behind Caitlin's desk next to her and Barry.
"Ready?" She asks softly, turning to Barry. He nods and turns toward her computer screen.
She plugs in the drive and opens the file that pops up, pressing play.
The image on the screen is an empty room behind a vacant desk in S.T.A.R. Labs. Wells walks into frame, sitting down at the desk. He turns to check behind him, removes his glasses, and focuses on the camera.
He takes a deep breath and begins:
Hello Barry. If you're watching this that means something has gone horribly wrong. I'm dead, and the last fifteen years have been for nothing. Bummer. Fifteen years. Ha. You know what I've realized in all these years helping raise you? We were never truly enemies. I'm not the thing you hate, and so...I'm going to give you the thing you want most. It won't matter. You'll never be truly happy. Trust me. I know you.
Barry tenses next to Caitlin. She could see it out of the corner of her eye. His jaw is clenched and he is staring at the screen with anger and hate in his eyes. She reaches out and puts her hand on his knee. He reaches down and at first she thinks he's about to move her hand off, but instead he grabs her hand and interlocks it with his, squeezing it tightly.
Now, erase everything I've said up to this point. Give the following message to the police.
Barry's grip lightens and his face turns to one of confusion. The three stare at the screen waiting for the next message. Wells clears his throat and leans a little toward the camera.
My name is Harrison Wells. Being of sound mind and body, I freely confess to the murder of Nora Allen in her home on the night of March 18th in the year 2000.
All three of their mouths are dropped open and their eyes are wide. Barry's hand goes limp in Caitlin's and she squeezes it, her mouth curling into a smile. Her and Cisco both turn to Barry to see tears in his eyes and his face slowly morphing into excitement.
"He confessed." Cisco states to the whole room.
Barry turns to them. "This is it. This is what I need to clear my dad."
Cisco and Caitlin both smile at him. "Go." Caitlin says, ejecting the drive and pulling it out of her computer, handing it to him. "Cisco and I can handle this here." She says motioning to the radiation tag they need to test. "Go get him."
Barry smiles widely, grabbing the drive from Caitlin and pulling her in tightly for a hug. Cisco joins in and wraps his arms around both of them. Once they release him, he's gone from the room.
"Guess we'll have to find another ride home." He states, turning to her. She's smiling. "So, watching yours next?" He suggests.
"Not a chance." She says in a light-hearted tone but being very serious. "Let's take a look at this tag."
After they're done at her lab, Caitlin and Cisco start walking to The Bean House.
"So, what did Wally want?" Caitlin asks.
"He's working on some car design. Uses biofuel, but that's just a small part of it. It's a massive project for someone his age, but he seems to know what he's doing." Cisco explains. "Did you know his mom was sick?"
"Yeah. That's why he needed the internship. Needed the money for her medical bills. And he spends a lot of time at my place since she's at the hospital a lot." Caitlin explains.
"Says he wouldn't be passing his classes if it wasn't for you." Cisco laughs.
Caitlin laughs. "That's giving me way too much credit. I help, but he's a smart kid. He stays up later than me most nights when he stays over just finishing up homework or studying."
Cisco looks down. "You've really made a life here haven't you?"
"I've tried." She says. "It's not quite what I had. But I can't just pick up and leave it."
He nods. "I know."
They walk into the coffee shop and order, sitting down.
"We should call Barry. See what they said about the video." Caitlin suggests. Cisco nods in agreement but doesn't move to do anything. "You're gonna have to call. I don't have his number."
Cisco furrows his eyebrows. "You deleted his number? Thought you weren't hiding from him?"
"I didn't delete it. When I tried to call, it said it was disconnected." She explains, looking down. "Guess he just didn't bother giving me the new number."
"That's...that's what you always meant when you kept saying you couldn't call him?" Cisco says in realization.
Caitlin nods, looking skeptically at Cisco. "What else would I mean?"
"I don't know. I thought you were being dramatic."
"That's you, Cisco." She jokes.
He pauses for a second and lets out a loud sigh laying his head on the table.
"What?" Caitlin asks.
"Just, you two drive me crazy." He takes his phone out and calls Barry.
"Hey Cisco!" Barry says, sounding cheerful.
"Hey. What did you find out about the video?" Cisco asks.
"The D.A. says all the details match up. They need to look into it a little more, but it's looking good." Barry explains. Cisco can hear him smiling.
"He says it's looking good." Cisco tells Caitlin. She smiles widely and claps.
"Any chance you'd wanna come pick us up when you get a minute?" Cisco asks Barry.
"Uh yeah. Are you guys still at the lab?" Barry asks.
"No, we're at a coffee shop down the street. We'll wait out back."
"Okay. Give me about five minutes to finish talking to Joe and I'll be there." Barry says.
"Okay." Cisco says, about to hang up. "Oh, and Barry?" He says. Barry grunts. "You might want to consider giving your new number to Caitlin."
"My what?" Barry says. "Oh..." He says in realization. "I called her a few months ago. She should have it."
"He says he called you a few months ago. You should have his number." Cisco explains.
"We never talked." Caitlin defends. "Give me the phone."
Cisco hands her the phone.
"When did you call?" Caitlin asks.
"I don't know. About a month after you left." He says.
"Did we talk?" She asks, wondering if she was half-asleep or something.
"No." He says, sounding guilty. "You uh, you answered, and I hung up."
"Well then how the hell was I supposed to know it was you?" She laughs.
"Sorry. I kinda forgot I had a new number. I assumed you knew it was me." Barry explains.
Caitlin laughs. "That's fine. I'll get it from Cisco. See you in a bit."
"Five minutes." He says, sounding excited.
She hangs up. "Why did he get a new number in the first place?" She asks.
"His phone broke while we were moving Iris and Eddie out. When he went to get a new one, he decided to finally get off Joe's family plan and they gave him a new number."
"That seems unnecessary." She says.
"That's what I said. Why not stay on the family plan?" Cisco says, finishing off his coffee.
"No not that. He's an adult, he can pay for his own phone. I meant the number." Caitlin laughs.
"Oh. Well being on a plan saves money." Cisco defends.
"Cisco, I have no problem with you still being on my plan. You pay me half anyway." He lets out a relieved sigh. "But Barry owns half of a renowned laboratory now, he can afford his own plan."
They laugh and walk out to the back to see Barry is leaning against the wall waiting for them.
"You're early." Cisco says when they walk out.
"That's new." Caitlin jokes.
Barry laughs and walks up to them, grabbing them and running them home.
They land in S.T.A.R. Labs where Stein and Joe are waiting.
"While we wait for news on the release of Mr. Allen, shall we take care of our Atom Smasher?" Stein suggests.
"Atom Smasher?" Cisco asks.
"Well yes, he absorbs atomic power, and he smashes." Steins explains.
Cisco hugs him and smiles. "I love it. Welcome to the team."
Caitlin, Joe, and Barry laugh while Stein detaches himself from Cisco.
"Thank you, Mr. Ramon. But while his name has been discovered, his weakness has not."
"Well, I actually had a thought about that." Caitlin interjects. They all turn to her. "Well. He likes radiation. That radiation tag was drained, not broken. He absorbs it from everything around him."
"Yeah. It makes him stronger." Barry says, rubbing his stomach where he was hit by Atom Smasher earlier that day
"Till it doesn't." Caitlin says.
"Over saturation." Stein says, looking excitedly at Caitlin.
"Let's give him more radiation than he can handle." Caitlin says.
"Where are we gonna get that much radiation?" Joe asks.
"The reactor downtown should be enough." Caitlin says.
"We lock him in there and flood it, he could grow strong enough to take out this whole town." Cisco states.
"Or overindulge and shrink back completely." Caitlin corrects.
"I don't love that logic." Joe says. "When does anything work like that?"
"It's our best shot right now." Barry says, turning to Caitlin. She smiles at him for supporting her.
"Fine. But how do we bring Rothstein out?" Joe asks.
"I have an idea for that." Cisco says, smiling widely.
*****************
"You guys all ready?" Barry asks before turning on the distress light with the sheet of metal over it that has a lightning bolt cut out of the center that Cisco made.
"Ready." Cisco and Caitlin say over the comms.
Barry turns on the light, aiming it over Central City. "How long do you think it'll take?"
Next thing he knows, Atom Smasher has appeared in front of him.
"Nice of you to drop by." Barry says, shutting off the light.
"How did you know that was gonna work?" Caitlin asks Cisco.
"Read it in a comic book somewhere." Cisco responds.
"Now I don't have to track you down." Atom Smasher says.
"No. But you do have to catch me." Barry says, taking off toward the reactor.
"He moves quite fast for a man of his size." Stein observes behind Caitlin and Cisco who both nod in agreement.
They watch as Barry's tracker goes inside the reactor, followed closely by Rothstein's.
"Didn't think I could catch you, did you?" Rothstein taunts.
"Actually, I was counting on it." Barry says.
"Now Cisco!" Barry yells through the comms.
Cisco shuts the door to the reactor and watches Barry's tracker beep outside of the reactor just as it shuts. He raises the radiation levels inside.
"He's getting bigger." Barry tells them.
"More, Cisco." Caitlin instructs, watching the radiation levels. Cisco turns it up.
They wait a moment. "He's shrinking back to normal." Barry says.
They all sigh in relief. Stein puts his hands on Caitlin's shoulder. "Well done, dear." She smiles up at him and turns back to the screen.
"He's still shrinking." Barry says, sounding concerned.
"Turn off the radiation." Caitlin instructs Cisco.
They wait to hear from Barry. They hear nothing at first. Barry walks into the reactor and up to Rothstein.
"Why did you want to kill me?" They hear Barry ask through the comms.
"He promised he'd take me home if I killed you." Rothstein chokes out.
"Who? Who promised you that?" Barry asks.
"Zoom." Rothstein barely whispers out before his voice cuts off.
Caitlin's eyes go wide. "Barry?" She asks weakly through the comms.
"He's dead." Barry says lightly.
Caitlin looks away from the screen, her eyes wide and her breathing heavy. She turns away from Cisco and Stein and puts her head in her hands, her elbows resting on her knees.
Cisco puts his hand on her back. "Caitlin. You didn't know." She turns to look at him. "No. Get that look off your face." He says, noticing the guilty and ashamed look. "You didn't do this. You didn't know."
She sighs and turns as Joe walks into the cortex.
"Where's Barry?" He asks.
"Just got done taking care of Rothstein. Should be back any minute." Cisco says.
"The D.A. called back." Joe announces to the room.
"And?" Barry asks, just having run into the room.
"And," Joe starts, his smile spreading across his entire face. "They're releasing your dad tomorrow afternoon."
Barry jumps on Joe, hugging him and Joe pats him on the back as he hugs back. Barry's smile is wide, and his eyes are watering. Stein puts his arms around Cisco and Caitlin, the three of them watching Joe and Barry. Barry lets go of Joe and looks over at them, all of them smiling widely at him.
