Chapter 65

Ashley was covering for the doctors who went on holiday for Chuseok. She, some foreign doctors along with the residents was doing the shifts alternatively.
She didn't sign up for night shifts, but she was doing it willingly this time.

"So, what's going on?" Park Aera put a clipboard on Ashley's desk.
"Everything's good?"

"Yeah," Ashley smiled, "have a seat, unnie."

The elder one didn't go on vacation this time considering both her husband and son were in the states. Her husband was an American having a small business here in Korea and went to visit his ill mother in the states.

" So what's going on with you and Taehyung?"

"What?" Ashley froze in place.

"Well, I saw you two together here," She paused to see Ashley's reaction.
"And I know it's him cause you know, Yuri never stopped blabbering about that VIP patient."

"Unnie...." Ashley started but cut off by her words-

"Not to mention all the smiles you two exchanged and the name saved in your phone as " Tae"... I saw it quite a few times already when you were in OR."

Ashley was really pale and stiffened at this point but still tried to grasp onto her last straw, "I don't know what are you referring to unnie. Now, what is this paper? About which patient?"

Park Aera was smiling at this point,
"You know, I am not that dumb, right? I can add up two and two."

Ashley didn't answer her.

"Hey, you can trust me. I am just curious."

Ashley looked at her, her eyes were sincere.

"Well, unnie..."

"So, it's true, isn't it?" she exclaimed excitedly, "Are you two in a relationship?"

"I am begging you unnie, please don't tell anybody about it," Ashley pleaded. "Not a single soul."

"How did you know each other? I mean it's pretty clear that you two knew each other beforehand!"

"It's a long story," Ashley sighed giving up.

"Come on, girl," The elder one smiled, "I am really happy seeing our one boy getting along with someone!"

"You are?" Ashley was quite surprised. She was well aware of the toxic fan culture.

"I'll zip it," she gestured her lips to zip on.
"Now tell me. "

"Well, ok," Ashley smiled a little and told her everything in the shortest way possible.

"Huh? Thats how you are trying to close me up? Don't worry, I'll come back for details again." Park Aera laughed, "So tell me, did you two exchanged the L word already?"

"Wow...too much information, unnie!" Ashley frowned smiling.

"You did!" smiled park Aera. "God, I  am so excited for you guys! It feels so unreal!"

"I know, right?" Ashley smiled.

"Can I meet him?...no, that wouldn't be appropriate! Can I have an autograph? My son would die for it. For real."

"I'll arrange it, promise," Ashley smiled.

"Don't forget, I'll come back for details for sure," Park Aera winked and went out to her station.

Ashley brought out her phone to call Taehyung and quickly changed the caller's name into " T ". It was already late, but he received it anyway.

"Hey," Taehyung's sleepy voice came out from the opposite of the phone.

"I love you, Tae."

"What happened to you?" Taehyung chuckled, still groggy from sleep.

"Something," Ashley laughed.

A sudden knock was on the door and the door flew open.

Ashley was startled.

Park Aera almost shouted, " Come at once. The car ran into embankment due to fog causing a series crash on the highway."

Ashley instantly cut the call and headed out towards E.R.

It was in the middle of the night when the first call came.
The paramedic was practically shouting on the phone in E.R.

The doctor attending the call to guide the paramedics through the process was at loss giving the instructions on the phone continuously. There was a huge car piled up, four dead on the spot, thirty-plus injured. Paramedics are bringing them here as it was the closest to the hospital. Two-run along doctors went with them. The residents were all called back, some arrangements were made to transfer few patients to other hospitals if needed. Hell was broken inside E.R. To prepare estimated everything. The doctor on the phone was continuously updated about the injury types of patients. Ashley prepared her team for any urgent surgery. Unfortunately, she was running short in hands. She brought her team to E.R. to do some help if no surgery is needed.

The first batch came in no time dropping two teenagers with dislocated hip bones and crushed ribs. The patients kept on coming. Things were getting worse when a person with cardiac arrest came in.

The doctor on phone with paramedics shouted from his booth,
"Get all these O.R. ready. We got two patients with internal hemorrhage, multiple fractures, one premature labor case, and One with stroke. Damn this night!!"

"I got this," Dr. Saul came out.
He was one of the neurosurgeons, here."Bring the stroke patient into my O.R. ASAP."

Park aera nodded in response. Ashley helped with the lightly injured patient there as she was, not needed in surgery at that moment until someone called her from the ESI 1.

"Dr. Ruth, we got two females with TBI ( traumatic brain injury). Mother and daughter."

Ashley rushed towards the room.

"Subject female, age 21, unresponsive at the site, foreign object inserted through the side of the skull up to brain's parietal lobe of the left side." Someone stated the facts and gave her a sheet of CAT scan and x-ray. They were already done within a short time.

"Subject female, age 54, open wound at the skull with possible whiplash injury and concussion".

Another x-ray was shoved at her hand. She took a look at both of them. No doubt, they both needed surgery. ASAP.

"Hang another bag of blood," the duty doctor shouted to his resident.
"She is losing blood pressure."

Ashley took a closer look at both the patient. The elderly woman was oozing out blood from her broken nose.

"Take them to surgery. Now. I'll take one. Page Dr. Shawn to take another one. We are gonna lose both if not taken into surgery now!"

"About that," Nurse hesitated. "All O.R are blocked."

"Every one of them?" Ashley couldn't believe her ears. "Not a single one is free?" she didn't recommend transferring them to another hospital. This mother-daughter won't make it till then.

The nurse talked with someone on the intercom. Ashley heard a heated conversation between the nurse and the opposite person on the phone.
She slammed down the phone and blurted out dryly, "One OR will be free in five minutes."

"We need two!" Ashley panicked.

"Dr. Ruth," duty doctor called her calmly, "Make a choice."

"H.....How?....!" Ashley whispered.
How could she decide to whom she should operate? And who should be the one left out for now?

"It's your call, Dr. Ruth. At least save one. The more time you'll spend thinking, they are drifting away here!"

"Dr," Ashley forgot to breathe. "How can I decide whom I want to live and whom to die? It's their lives for god's sake!"

"What do you want? Both of them to die?" Dr. Asked bitterly. "You have no choice. Pick one."

Ashley's palms went clammy. She inspected both the patient. She never felt so helpless in her life. What should she do?

"Pick someone who you can guarantee to save. Hurry doctor."

Ashley sighed and pointed at the
young girl. "Get her to my OR. Call Dr. Shawn. Tell him to treat the mother here as much as possible and conduct the surgery here if possible and take her to surgery if any of the OR gets free. Let's get it."

Taehyung was enjoying the night view lit with fireworks after a nap.

"Oppa," Eun Jin called him from behind, "eomma is calling you for dinner. Everyone is waiting."

"Come here," Taehyung pulled her by the wrist to stand beside him on the balcony. "Five minutes more."

"Eomma told that you were gonna bring that doctor," Eun Jin pouted,
"Where is she? "

"She told you too?" Taehyung smiled.

"Told us both. She is awesome," Eun Jin was excited like a kid, "She is so cool. You won't believe when she was on duty the day after, she... "

" Enough of your blabbering," Taehyung draped his one hand around her shoulder, "Where is Jeong Gyu?"

"He and abeoji are having one hand again," she referred to never-ending rounds of Go of both males.

"Fireworks looks great!" Taehyung commented.

"Oppa, do you miss her?" Eun Jin grinned.

"let's go," Taehyung pulled her by her wrist, "or eomma will burn the place down any second now.

Yes, he did miss her. He wished to see the fireworks together. He wished she was having a good time but he knew that emergency call. Things are probably going crazy there.
He just didn't know how much tension was going down there.
