CHAPTER TWO: A SURPRISE

It was early in the morning, and Maddie and Five was laying in bed asleep.

Maddie opened her eyes to see Five's eyes closed, but every few minutes, he would tighten his hold, or kiss her cheek, or run his fingers through her hair.

She sifted onto her other side so her back was against his chest. He responded by tightening his hold and drawing her closer, but this time, it seemed more like a reflex. From his steady, rhythmic breathing, she could tell he was asleep, so she let out a smile.

Five let out a sigh, dragging his hand down his face as the sound of his alarm went off.

"Mhm" she mumbled as she turn in her half sleep. Five moved his arm from under her, turning to reach the alarm to turn it off.

She felt a strong arm sneaking around her waist from behind and husky morning voice in her ear "Morning, Love" he said. She smiled and turn around to see a smirking face, a face she love "Morning, handsome" she said with a smile before she turned around and try to get back to sleep "How are you feeling today?" he asked "A little better. I just need 20 more minutes" she said, tired "So no nausea?" he asked and she lightly shook her head.

The two still get this 'new love' feeling everyday.

"Can you go make breakfast?" she asked "That's not fair, I made it yesterday" he said laughing "Okay, there's the deal Mr. Hargreeves. You go make it and I'll give you a kiss" she smiled at him.

"Deal, but then you have to wake up" he said "Okay, fine" she let out a sigh before she yawned as she stretched her arms out to the side.

"How did you sleep?" he asked "Fine" she said before looking at him "You?" she asked "I slept wonderful" he said before he leaned closer.

But when their lips were about to touch, Maddie felt nausea so she jumped out of the bed while holding her hand over her mouth before running into the bathroom "Is my breath that bad?" he asked.

"What's wrong?" he asked as he rubbed his eyes while Maddie was in the bathroom.

"Love" Five got up before he walked over to the bathroom to see her throwing up in the toilet. He rushed over to her before he kneeled down behind her and rubs her back while holding her hair back.

"Love are you okay?" he asked but she didn't answer, she continued throwing up.

After a few minutes she lean back "I think I'm okay now. Must have been the food we had yesterday" she said "But I ate the same and I didn't get it" he said.

Maddie sat onto the closed toilet seat, as she whipped her mouth with her hand "Maybe is just an astomach bug" she said "Yeah, maybe" he said.

The next day

"Honey, what's the date today?" she asked "August 10, why?" he asked and she flips through her calendar.

"Shit..." she said "Maddie, what is it?" he asked "I'm late" she said "Late for what? We don't have any plans today" he said and she looked at him "No, Five, my period's late" she walked over to the mirror in the bedroom.

"What are you doing?" he asked as he watch her slowly lift up her shirt.

She looked down at her stomach through the mirror "Does my stomach look big to you?" she asked as she put her hands on her stomach "What are you talking about?" he asked "Does it look big?" she asked "I don't know. You look fine" he said.

"I haven't had my period in two months" she said "So?" Five asked "So...?" he asked "So...A woman missing her period is a big thing. It can mean a lot of things...Like she is stress or she is...." Maddie froze.

"She is what?" Five asked.

"Pregnant" she finished.

"What are you saying? You're pregnant?" he asked "Well my period had being late before, but that was because of stress, but it has never being two months late before and also I'm not stress right now, but the morning sickness earlier, it kinda adds up" she said and they both widened their eyes "You don't think..." she nodded "I think I might be pregnant" she said.

Five didn't say anything "Why aren't you saying anything?" she asked "I don't know what to say" he said before he took a deep breath.

"A baby" he said quiet "I could be a father" he smiled for a second but then his smile dropped.

"How is that going to work. I have never taking care of a baby before?" he said as he kept walking back and forth, he was so focus on his thoughts that he forgot his wife were in the room with him.

"And what about if Reginald finds out or some other bad people finds out" he scoffed "How can I protect it without my powers" he said quiet again as he let out a sigh.

"Five. Are you okay?" she asked.

"What were you thinking about getting pregnant?" he asked "Do you think I chose this. Remember, making a baby is a two person job" she said.

"What are we going to do?" he was panicking a little bit.

"Five" she said and he stopped before he looked at her "Five, I might not be pregnant. I could just be having my period late and probably have a stomach bug or something" she said "Late period? For two months?" he asked "I don't know" she said as she sat down on the bed.

"Honey. I'm scared" she said as she let out a sob "I'm happy too, trust me if I am pregnant I would give the baby the whole world...But" she said "But?" he asked as he sat down next to her and she laid her head on his shoulder before looking down at the floor.

"I've never taking care of a baby in my life" she said "There's a first time for everything" he said "What if I'm not a good mother...I don't know the first thing about baby or kids" she said "Honey, you would be a great mother" he said "What makes you so sure?" you asked "Because I know you believe it or not. You are the most caring person I know. You don't let your past bring you down. You have always seen the good in everything and everyone. You are so full of hope, joy and positive, no matter what situation we're in. You always seeing a bright thing in everything. You try to see the good in people and when you find that good in them, you try to help that person see it too. You are my light" he said "You make it sound like I'm your everything" she said with a chuckled.

"You are" he put her face in his hands before he gave her a kiss.

"I'm just...scared. Starting a family is scary, like your whole life revolves around a little human" she said "I know it can be scary, but for all new parents that's how it can be. I mean I've never being a dad before, I'm terrified, but I wouldn't want to do this with anyone else but you" he said.

"I love you" he smiled "And the truth is, I'm also scared to death" he said "What are we gonna do?" I asked "I don't know, but we will figure it out" he said before kissing her again.

"And even if you are not pregnant, then it's okay" he said "Yeah, I mean my period have being late before" she said "And you could have a stomach bug or something" he said and she nodded.

"But how do we find out?" he asked "Wait here" she got up and went to the bathroom.

After a minute she back to the room holding a pregnancy test "We want to know for sure, right" she said and he nodded "I'll go take it and then we can look at it together" she said and he nodded "Just know that whatever it says, we will get through it together and I'm not going to leave you" he kissed her cheek and she got up before she went to the bathroom.

Then she walked out again with the test upside down in her hands "How long do we have to wait?" he asked "Two minutes" she said before she sat next to him and he took her hand.

"Look I actually didn't think I would be ready for all of this with the baby carrier, the diapers, get woken up in the middle of the night by a baby crying. The late night feeding and all of that. But I think I can do it. I will be new to all of this daddy thing, but if it means that I'm doing it with you, our child. I will do whatever it takes" he said "I know you would" she nodded "I can't promise that I wouldn't screw it up from time to time. But I can promise that I wouldn't run away or leave. I won't back down" he said and she smiled.

"I want to be the guy that help you fulfill your dreams, and if kids is one of those dreams then I want to give that to you" he said "You know that you don't have to if you don't want to" she said "I do want to. I actually want to have kids with you" he said "Do you really mean that?" she asked and he nodded "I wouldn't say it if I didn't mean it" he said and she smiled.   

The couple both sat and waited for what felt like an eternity "I think it's time" he said and she nodded before she flipped the test over to see what it said.

Their eyes widened when they saw the two lines on the test.

"Two lines, does that mean---" "I'm pregnant. Oh, my God, we're going to have a baby" she said.

Five got up and walked over to the window "Five?" she got up and walked over to him "Honey?" she asked "I'm going to be a dad" he smiled as he turned to her and she saw that small tears were showing in his eyes.

She nodded with a smile "Am I going to be a good dad?" he asked and she took his hands in hers "You are going to be an amazing dad" she said and he kissed her.

"And you're going to be an amazing mom" he said "So, you're happy. I know this wasn't part of the plan" she said "I'm beyond happy. I'm so excited" he said and she smiled "You are?" she asked.

"So freaking excited" he smiled and she wrapped her arms around him, pulling him into a hug "I love you so much and I'm so excited too" she said.

"My favorite person is about to create my new favorite person" he said.

LATER THAT DAY

Maddie woke up around four in the morning to see that Five was not laying next to her "Five?" she looked around before she got up and began looking for him around the room.

Five was sitting by a bar at the Hotel. "Who am I kidding" he put his glass with alcohol on the counter in front of him "I'm gonna be a shitty dad" he took a sip of his glass.

"I doubt that" a voice said and Five looked to the left to see Freddy sitting next to him, his elbows on the counter and his back leaned against the counter while his legs were on cross.

"What are you doing here?" Five asked "Talking some sense in you" he said and Five scoffs "What are you doing here?" Freddy asked "Thinking" Five answered "About what?" Freddy asked.

"I can't be a dad" Five answered "Five, what are you talking about?" Freddy asked "I won't be a good dad. I'll just ruin the kid's life" Five said "Where is this coming from? You were so excited" Freddy said "Have you met me?" Five asked "No kids want me to be their dad" he took another sip of his glass.

"You are just having a breakdown and you think by fixing it, is drinking" Freddy said "I just don't know how it happen" Five said "Well, the flower and the bee, you see---" "I know how it happens" Five said, cutting him off.

"I just don't know when, the last time we had unprotected sex was..." Five stopped himself as his eyes widened "Was at our wedding and that was two months ago" he said before he tug his hair.

"She was pregnant while we were fighting for our lives. That's why she was throwing up the that morning. We both thought it was because of the alcohol. We didn't know that it would happen that night" he said.

"Well, when you don't use condoms or other protection, there is a bigger chance for a woman to get pregnant" Freddy said "Well, we didn't have any protection and we wasn't thinking about the consequences" Five said "You took the chance. No one know could know that it will happen" Freddy said "But of course it would have happened. We could have seen it coming, I mean we did it three times that night" Five let out a sigh.

"But still I'm going to be a shitty dad" he said "No you are not" Freddy said "I would. I have no practise at all and have no idea how to be a good a parent" Five said "Do you think that Maddie knows how to be a good parent?" Freddy asked "She will" Five said "Look" Freddy turned around so he was facing the counter.

"You love Maddie, right?" he asked "More than anything" Five said "And I know that she loves you more than anything too. You love her and she love you. Everything will work out on its own. As long as you get through the hard things, together. So fucking man up and be that guy you really are deep down" Freddy said and Five looked at him.

The bartender looked over at Five and narrowed his eyes when he saw the young guy talking to himself as he saw no one was sitting next to him or near him.

"Go away" Five looked away from Freddy "I'm not going away, your mind created an imaged of me because your subconscious is trying to talk some sense in you, it's trying to tell you what you really think deep down. I'm only saying things your subconscious is saying to you deep down. You created an illusion of me, because you knew that you will listen to me" Freddy said.

"I wish you were really here. I miss you more than I thought I would, even so I have only known you for a little bit over a year" Five said "People can become very close to someone in just one year than an entire life" Freddy said and Five looked at him.

"Don't think too much about it. You have her, she has you. You are both alive, well and happy and that all you guys need" Freddy said as he looked at Five "Don't give up these things. All your life, you wanted to be with Maddie and now you have her. You have gotten that life you always wanted but never thought you could have, so don't screw things up now. Enjoy them as much as you can for as long as you can, because you never know what will happen and once those times have past, you can't never get them back. So don't waste them" Freddy smiled

"Five" a voice said and Five looked towards the voice to see Maddie walking towards to him. Five looked to the left to see that Freddy was gone causing him to let out a sigh.

"Five" Maddie said again "Shit" Five said with a sigh before he lifted up his glass but she took the glass from him "No more" she said before she sat down next to him, taking his hand.

"Could you get him some water?" she asked the bartender and he nodded "Of course" he said before he sat a glass of water in front of Five "Thank you" she said.

Five picked up the glass before taking a sip "Talk to me" she said "You're gonna hate me" he said "I could never hate you. Just please talk to me" she said "I'm just not cut out to be a dad" he said, putting down the glass.

"Hon---" "No, Love. I don't want to hear you tell me how great of a dad I'll be" he said, cutting her off "But you will be" she said "No, I won't" he shook his head lightly.

"Where is all this coming from?" she asked "I had a dream last night" he said "What happened in your dream?" she asked "You left me with the baby so you could go run some errands and it was horrible. I didn't know what to do or where anything was. The baby started crying, and I was rushing back and forth, couldn't do anything. And when I picked up the baby, I dropped it. I panicked and it made me realize how unprepared I am. And we had a shitty dad, so I'm going to be a shitty dad too" he said.

"That doesn't mean you're going to be a bad dad. Just because you had a shitty dad, doesn't mean you will be one, and we didn't even have a real mom. Do you think I'm going to be a bad mom?" she asked "No" he answered and she stroke her thumb up and down on his knuckles.

"But what if I don't have a strong connection with the baby?" he asked "That is absolutely impossible. You already have such a strong connection with the baby and it's not even born yet" she said and he looked at her "You're nothing like our dad. You're going to love the kid more than life itself. And you're going to be the best dad in the world" she said before taking a deep breath.

"Look. We're both going to be new at being parents. We're going to go through this together, and be there for each together, every step of the way. Always and forever, in good and bad ways" she said "Always and forever, in good and bad ways" he said "And you really are going to be an amazing dad, you're already an amazing husband" she said and he smiled before he kissed her head "I'm sorry, I think I just had a breakdown" he said "It's okay" she said "I love you so much" he said "I love you so much, too" she said before they press their lips against each other.

"Let's go back" she said and he nodded.
