Chapter one, first encounter

Gwen Cullen sat across was her older adoptive brother, staring at him in disbelief. "Edward this is absurd. I can't believe you want me to stay behind!"

Fear and sadness lingered in her voice, not liking the thought of staying behind alone in Forks. Especially with the wolves lingering, all ready and wanting to end her.

Her family had decided to leave Forks early that day, the reason being to give Bella the chance to live a normal human life. At least that's what Edward kept saying and everyone agreed seeing the desperation on his face.

Edward sighed, grabbing her hands lightly. "Please Gwen, I can't just leave her behind unprotected."

The mind reader loved the human so much and the thought of leaving hurt. But it was a decision that needed to be made according to Edward.

They both knew what Edward's words meant, Bella tended to find trouble and get hurt stupidly. And Edward trusted the blonde more than anyone, both being alone and together at the same time.

"What about the wolves? You know they freak me out, especially with the last incident." Both vampires shuddered at the reminder. Before the treaty was formed, Gwen was seconds away from being ripped apart by the shifters. That incident still haunts her and Gwen still hates being in Forks because of that.

"I know, But Gwen I trust you and I know how close you and Bella are. But if you don't want to, it's fine. I also want you with me, I'll miss you too much to be away." Edward softly says, causing the blonde to nod knowing it's true.

While the human was researching vampires, she coincidentally researched Gwen since she looked very familiar. That led the human to find an article about Gwen Raven. That was something Edward couldn't deny and hide. Most humans are gullible and never make that connection so fast.

There have been incidents where some humans connect Gwen to her past but they normally just leave before any actual answers can be made.

Gwen felt her lip tremble, knowing there was only one right decision. "I'll stay but I'll miss you all so much."

Edward immediately pulled the blonde into a tight hug, feeling both thankful and sad.

The mindreader and healer have never been apart before. From the moment Gwen woke up as a vampire, she immediately stuck to Edward like glue. Finding comfort in him.

Carlisle has always believed it was because of their similar personality. Their father figure was also very pleased to see Edward immediately take the blonde under his wing teaching her everything about their new life and helping Gwen explore her gift.

Gwen hugged Edward back, not wanting to let him go. "Call me please, and if you ever need me I'll be there right away, okay?"

Edward nods giving her a small smile, he was leaving the family to be on his own for a while, and that worried Gwen. Knowing that sometimes her brother was too hard on himself.

"Promise?" Gwen asks holding out her pinky, Edward chuckles softly. Gwen was the baby of the family so everyone had a soft soft for her and treated her that way.

"Promise." The mindreader says connecting his pinky to hers.

Carlisle overhearing the conversation between the two siblings, Edward already reading his mind stepped away from the blonde.

"Gwen, are you sure?" The doctor wasn't sure if leaving behind his youngest was the best choice. He also knew Esme would hate the idea.

"I'm sure Dad, Bella will need someone and I can't leave knowing she'll be hurting. I'll tell everyone I want to finish the nursing program at the hospital." Gwen says hugging Carlisle tightly. The father figure hugs her back tight, "All alright, but you had to promise to call and stay away from the wolves."

Gwen immediately nodded, she wasn't about to argue that.

"Are you sure about the hospital internship? I can get you out of that." Carlisle reassured his daughter.

"Dad, you know I belong there." It was true, Gwen had a unique but powerful gift. Carlisle is still shocked and researching her capability.

The bright cheerful girl has the ability to heal injuries, of any type. Like broken bones, scars, viruses, and things like that. But over the years it's expanded, she once cured a cancer patient and has saved others from death. Decades ago, she would pose as a Doctor since she had many degrees and knowledge. But that was getting harder with new laws, human evolution, and well the obvious...her appearance.

Everyone knowing what was going to happen hugged the blonde and made her promise to call, especially her mother figure who looked sad.

After everyone packed their belongings, Carlisle made the call to the hospital informing them of his leave but making sure to say his daughter would stay and continue her studies.

It was hard for Rose to let go of the tiny blonde who had become her younger sister. "I really don't agree with this, but I trust your judgment."

"I'll see you soon alright, this isn't forever," Gwen says tears forming in her eyes that will never fall just burn. The girls hug before they see Emmett with his arms crossed, not looking happy.

"Em, I'll be okay. You don't have to worry." Emmett and Gwen, being the two youngest have always been close and the older one wasn't happy about leaving her behind.

Emmett hugged her so tight, it was good she couldn't break or needed to breathe. She was going to miss her whole family but time goes by fast, and she would see them again soon.

Alice and Jasper also hug her goodbye, both saying they'll miss having her constantly bug them. Which is such an older sibling thing to say.

As everyone left, all that stood was a partly empty house and Edward. "I'll take care of her, I promise."

Edward nodded, his face had a frown and his eyes had a hurtful expression. Leaving Bella would be hard for him, that much was obvious. But also leaving behind his little sister felt dreadful, they had always had a strong special bond since day one.

"I know you will but also take care of yourself. Don't do anything reckless. I love you Gwen." Edward says pulling her into another hug. Even though he had asked her to stay behind, another part of him wanted to just take her with him.

It was hard for Gwen too but she had to be the strong one and pull a smile to try and calm his nerves. "I love you more always."

The two pull away and Edward quickly leaves to do the hardest part yet.

Gwen looked around the house, it felt very cold and empty without her family. The healer sat on the couch and allowed herself a couple of minutes to dryly cry before she pulled herself together needing to go to the hospital for her shift.

Quickly changing, Gwen grabs her stethoscope and puts it around her neck. As she was walking to the car, her phone started to ring. Thinking it was Edward, she answers without looking but instead hears a very panicked Charlie Swan.

"Gwen, thank god you answered. Are you with Bella by any chance?" Charlie's voice sounds awful. Even over the phone, it was obvious how worried and scared he was.

"I'm not, she's not home yet?" Gwen questions as her mind starts thinking of possibilities knowing how reckless Bella was. Edward said he was going to break up with her in the woods close to her house. Did that not happen?

Charlie's voice creaked, "No, her truck is in the driveway and it's late, she should be home already. I was hoping she was with you or your brother." The word brother comes out with disgust. And Gwen would have laughed if the situation wasn't so serious.

"I'm sorry, she isn't. I was about to head to the hospital but what if I come over and try to look for her?" The healer tries to calm him down, Bella had to be safe and they needed to think positively.

"Please, some people are already here to start a search party, and we can use all the help we can get," Charlie tells the teenager, trying to sound as calm as possible.

"I'll be there in five." The blonde says before hanging up and quickly getting in her car. She texts her supervisor about her plans and head straight to the Swan residence.

She called Edward twice but no answer, the phone didn't even ring. He most likely broke it or it was dead. However, Gwen also didn't want to worry him so she didn't bother trying again.

When the healer finally arrived, there were many people outside the house in the background looking straight at the woods. They had people with maps in front of them and many flashlights.

Gwen immediately headed straight for Charlie Swan once she parked in front of the house. She saw him in a small group and for a moment the blonde regretted her decision about coming to help.

Jacob and Billy Black along with Harry Clearwater were around him, they were a part of the reservation council and knew of her family background.

"Charlie!" The blonde called out which made the group look up at her. Charlie was the only one who looked relieved and glad to see her as if somehow her being there helped.

The others tense up as Gwen approached, her gold ember eyes littering under the flashlight. Harry and Billy were fully aware of what she was while Jacob just didn't like the Cullen's.

Sometimes the ones who knew their secret often wondered why others didn't figure out the obvious differences. Here was a 18 year old teenager, pale skin, freezing skin, never seen eating and with gold eyes? In what world are gold eyes natural and real? She was also standing in cold weather, not wearing a jacket and walking in heels while everyone else was wearing huge jackets. The obvious answer was right in front of them but the humans didn't even bat an eye.

"No updates?" The blonde questions, feeling a bit shy and self-conscious under the eyes of Billy and Harry. Charlie noticed and shot his friends a glare.

"Nothing yet, we're going to split up and see if she's in the woods." Charlie shakes his head and replies anxiously. "Where's the rest of your family? Maybe she's with Edward and lost track of time?"

Gwen takes a nervous gulp shakes her head, and is about to say something when she meets Billy's eyes. They were making her uncomfortable and they knew it, Gwen figured they thought that Bella was one of them or that they had killed her.

"They left town, this morning. Carlisle found a new job opportunity..." She explained but flinched when she saw Billy's fist tighten and Harry mumbled a 'finally' under his breath so only she could hear.

"What about you? You're like what 17? They can't leave you behind alone?" Charlie once again looked worried thinking they abandoned her.

"They didn't, I just turned 18 so I'm legally allowed to be alone. I wanted to finish the school year and my internship at the hospital before I joined them." Gwen explained but couldn't help but notice Billy and Harry's burning stare on the side of her face. Eyeing her from head to toe.

Charlie looked like he didn't like her answer but shook his head. His mind was running wild with ideas and worries. His newly aged 18-year-old daughter was missing and her 18-year-old friend was now living alone in the middle of the woods. This was a lose-lose situation, and he couldn't help but feel worried about both girls.

Harry puts a reassuring hand on Charlie's shoulder, seeing the anxiety and stress on his face. "We'll find her, Charlie." Charlie is glad for the comfort of his two friends.

"Charlie!" Jacob calls out pointing behind him and Charlie spins to where Jacob points. He immediately spots Bella in the arms of Sam Uley and lets out a sigh of relief.

He's carrying Bella over to him, alive but freezing.

"It's Sam Uley. He found her." Billy says as Charlie bolts to her, he's never moved faster in his life.

"She's alright!" Sam calls out making sure everyone hears. Gwen took a step back, she had never met any of the wolves and had an aching feeling Sam wouldn't be happy to see her after Carlisle confirmed their leaving.

He wraps his arms around Bella, lifting her from Sam's arms. "Thank you, Sam. Thank God."

Charlie cradled his daughter to his chest and felt her shivering cold. Sam gave him a firm nod before looking behind him at Harry and Billy. Billy gives Sam a nod of praise and gratitude. However, Sam's eyes immediately find Gwen Cullen who refuses to look at him.

Gwen doesn't breathe, Sam smelled awful to her nose. Instead watches as Charlie carries his daughter inside. She could feel Sam's glare and it seemed like he wasn't going to leave without talking to her first.

Jacob begins to follow Charlie but slowly turns around feeling eyes on his back. He turns to see Sam Uley staring at him. Jacob feeling very uncomfortable, quickly looks away.

The blonde healer wants nothing more than to follow Charlie inside and she is about to when she hears a strong voice behind her. "We need to talk."

Flinching, Gwen looked at Sam and nodded, the vampire glanced over at Billy and Harry to see them already looking at them before she followed in after the wolf heading straight for the dark woods.

Gwen immediately sensed two other presents near and it made her nervous as she was outnumbered. However, per the treaty, they were technically on her land but that didn't stop her from wrapping her arms around her softly.

Once they were deep enough, two wolves both with dark gray fur came out slowly behind Sam eyeing her cautiously.

The blonde took a step back but looked at Sam, waiting for him to start the conversation.

"You were supposed to be gone." His words were hard and firm causing the blonde to once again flinch. Her fear was quite obvious to the three and they were both glad and curious as to why.

"Is it just me or is she afraid of us?" Jared questions Paul through their mind link. But Paul just growls and gives a quick "Shut up, Jared."

"I have a nursing internship at the hospital...and I didn't want to leave Bella alone."

"Bella would be safer with you gone." Sam reminds her, with a glare and harsh tone.

"Bella won't be stable, she's hurting and I refuse to leave her alone." Gwen snaps back, equally upset now. No one has ever talked to her like that and it wasn't about to start now.

Paul snaps his teeth and growls loudly causing the blonde to turn her gaze to him annoyed. Their eyes meet and everything stops.

Paul looks at her and sees some glimpse of what seemed to be the future, something else that was strange was how her scent went from an awful smelling of death to a vanilla scent. Gwen felt this warm feeling in her chest but was very confused since she had never gotten that feeling before.

It seems like Sam and Jared were both looking between the pair with a mixed look of shock and disbelief. But they immediately noticed how she no longer reeked of death.

Before any words can be said Paul snarls at her angrily before running back through the words and disappearing. Gwen stared at him in stock, confused as to what happened before turning her gaze at Sam.

"What's his problem? Did he uh hurt his paw or something?" Gwen asked and Jared let out a sound that sounded like a laugh. Sam glared at him and waved his hand as if ordering him to leave. Which Jared followed.

"The treaty stands, stay out of trouble," Sam says not as harshly, not sure how to act around her anymore. She was technically Paul's Emily and he wouldn't like Paul or Jared to disrespect his imprint.

Gwen stared at him in disbelief and watched as he shifted and left.

"What the hell just happened?" She questions herself out loud before taking off back to the Swan residence to check up on Bella and drive to the hospital.

However, when she was running back, she heard a loud howl. Something weird happened and she needed to know what.
