*Chapter Twenty* {Let the Right One In}
"Knock, knock" Alvina says popping her head into Alaric's classroom. Damon instantly grins upon seeing her. He waves her in and she enters the room.
"What is she doing here?" Alaric asks confused.
"Yeah, what's going on?" Alvina asks.
"You're here to help get Stefan back" Damon tells her.
"Stefan's gone?" Alvina frowns her eyebrows.
"Tomb vampires got him, we're getting him back" Damon explains and Alvina shrugs nodding. He turns to Alaric. "She's a fairy, bite lethal to vampires, useful" Alaric glances at Alvina who grins widely and gives him a small wave. "Now that we're all on the same page, Elena" He says turning towards Jeremy's sister.
"Stefan's in the house" Elena explains. "Damon's a vampire. He can't get in. We need one of you two to get in. I wold go, but-"
"But your life is valuable" Damon says. "So is yours" He adds glancing at Alvina.
"Why, thank you" Alvina grins feeling special. He smirks and turns to Alaric.
"Yours on the other hand..." Damon shrugs. He knew Alvina would be able to get into the house without a problem but they didn't know how many vampires they would be dealing with and Damon didn't want Alvina to get stuck on the inside on her own. He wouldn't be able to bare it if something happened to her.
"Stefan told me about your ring" Elena says.
"What about it?" Alaric asks.
"Let me recap" Damon says growing bored with the slow conversation. "You tried to kill me. I defended myself. You died. Then, according too my brother, your ring brought you back to life. Am I leaving anything out?" Damon asks.
"Yeah, the part where I try and kill you again, only this time, I don't miss" Alaric snips and Alvina laughs.
"People have been taking shots at him for decades, good luck" Alvina jokes knowing she wouldn't let the teacher take her best friend from her.
"Mr. Saltzman, please, it's Stefan" Elena stresses.
"I'm sorry, Elena, but it's not my problem"
"That's a shame because the woman in charge of the crowd can help you find your wife" Damon baits.
"Your lying"
"Am I?" Damon taunts. "Why don't you ask her yourself?... Coward. Come on, ladies"
"Alright, wait! I'll go" Alaric says falling for Damon's bluff. Damon smirks turning back around.
"Teacher by day, vampire hunter by night" Damon says as Alaric lays his weapons on the table.
"I've you to thank for that" Alaric eyes Damon.
Alvina grins and picks up a weapon curiously. Alaric grabs it and sets it back down before she could shoot someone. Alvina pouts and picks up a different weapon only for Alaric to do the same thing. She glares and continues to grab weapons and he continues to take them away and set them down. Damon watches the interaction with extreme amusement.
"What are these?" Elena asks picking up some darts. Alaric explains what they are but Alvina simply drowns everyone out as she eyes the various weapons. "I'm going with you guys" Elena says obviously sometime later in the conversation. Damon instantly disagrees. "You need me, I'll get in. You could distract the, and I'll get Stefan out"
"You'll get yourself killed. You're not going in there" Damon snapped. Elena insists but Damon hardly budges. "So, when you get me and Al inside, get out as quickly as you can. We know how to sneak around where they can't hear us. You'll basically just be in the way" Elena pesters Damon again about being a bigger part of the plan. "Fine" Damon grumbles giving in. "Elena, you can drive the getaway car. You're not going in the house"
"You cant stop me" Elena says and Alvina snorts finding her arrogance very amusing. "It's Stefan we're talking about here, you don't understand"
"Oh, I understand" Damon nods extremely jealous about Elena's protectiveness over his brother. "He's the reason you live. His love lifts you up where you belong. I get it" Damon growls. Alvina gives him a empathetic look but he ignores her.
"Can you just not joke around for 2 seconds?" Elena complains.
"I can't protect you, Elena" He admits. "I don't know how many vampires there are in there." He snaps his fingers. "That's how long it takes you to get your head ripped off. I have to be able to get in and get out. I can't be distracted with your safety. Or this will end up a bloodbath that none of us walk away from, including Stefan. Al can protect herself, she's scary good at taking vampires on, I've seen it."
"If we're gonna go, let's go" Alaric pipes in awkwardly. Damon nods and the two men walk ahead of them.
"Don't be upset with Damon, he's just trying to protect you" Alvina explains to her as they follow after them. "He wants to keep you safe and get Stefan out alive."
"I can protect myself" Elena insists.
"Not against a small army of vampires" She tells her. "Elena, you have to know your limitations or else you're gonna get yourself killed and what good will that do?" Alvina asks her before walking ahead.
They walk to Damon's car and squeeze in. When they arrive to the house Alaric, Alvina and Damon leave Elena behind and head towards the house.
"So, why exactly am I here in the pouring rain?" Alvina complains instantly getting soaking wet.
"In case things go south" He mutters to her watching Alaric go up to the house.
"How did they even get Stefan?" She asks.
"While he was hunting" Damon answers shortly. Alvina nods and quietens. "Come on" Damon says pulling her towards the front door.
"I can walk just fine on my own" Alvina grumbles shoving him off of her. He rolls his eyes and gives her a brotherly push. She narrows her eyes and shoves him back.
"Knock it off" He mutters hearing the owner of the house coming towards the door.
"You started it!" Alvina whines and Damon shushes her as the door opens. Alvina rolls her eyes and stomps on his foot. He groans and gives her a look but she just stands there innocently.
"Oh, I'm sorry, he's not allowed in the house" The woman tells Alaric.
"I know that, but you've gotta make an exception" Alaric tries to convince her.
"Get her out of the house" Damon orders but Alaric looks hesitant. "Now!" He snaps. Alaric guides her out of the house. "Miss Gibbons, tell me the truth. Are you married?" She's not. "Parents, children, anyone else who lives on this property?" There's no one else. After learning this, Damon kills the women which allows him to enter the house.
"You were supposed to compel her" Alaric snaps as Damon and Alvina enter the house.
"It doesn't work that way" Damon shrugs.
"She's human!"
"And I'm not!" Damon snaps. "So, I don't care. Now, get out of here and get rid of the body" Damon orders. "Come on, Al"
"Split up?" Alvina suggests and Damon nods.
"Holler if you need me" Damon mutters before going a different way. Alvina searches the house keeping to the shadows.
"Alvina!" Jeremy's voice screams from the forest. Alvina instantly leaves the house, leaving Damon to find Stefan on his own.
"Jeremy!?" She shouts listening for him. There's a moment of silence and her heart hammers in her chest.
"Alvina!" Alvina's head snaps to the side and she takes off deeper into the forest. She turns into her fairy form knowing she'd be able to move faster. "Alvina! Help me!"
"Jeremy?! Where are you?!" She shouts over the rain. She turns her head side-to-side hoping to catch a glimpse of him.
"Alvina!" She looks and sees him for a split second before he disappears. She quickly flies in his direction. "Alvina, please!"
"Where are you?!" She cries out becoming more frantic when a net slams into her and knocks her out of the sky and into the ground. She turns into her full groans self but remains in fairy form. She groans as she turns in the mud.
She tries to get out of the net but it's practically impossible. She looks at it in confusion not knowing what the net was made out of but it was weakening her. She looks around for the person who captured her.
"So, it's true" Alvina turns her head towards the voice. "You are a halfbreed"
"Who are you?" Alvina asks frowning her eyebrows as her breathing picks up. "Where's Jeremy?" She asks frantically.
"I don't know, probably where you left him" The man said kneeling in the mud beside her. "You should really learnt he difference between what's real and what's an illusion"
"What?" Alvina whispers in confusion. The man chuckles at her and Alvina realizes what he is. She can smell it, sense it. He's a fairy, like her, only a full blooded one. Alvina couldn't remember meeting a full blooded fairy beside her mother.
"So young, so weak, so ignorant" He chuckles shaking his head. "Do you even know the extent of your abilities?"
"What do you want with me? Why are you doing this?" She asks.
"Just doing a little exterminating" He shrugs nonchalantly. "Got an anonymous tip about a half-blooded fairy flying around here, an abomination" He spits.
Alvina glares at him not showing her fear. She remembers her mother telling her about how she would never be accepted with the other fairy's simply because she's half human. She had never imagined she would be hated so much that one would hunt her down, trap her and then what?
"What are you gonna do?" Alvina whispers.
"Sell you to the highest bidder" The man smirks picking up the net enclosing her in it. She tries to struggle but the most she did the weaker she became. "Enchanted iron" Alvina notices his arms and hands are covered. "It's a bitch, aint it?"
"Let me go" Alvina growls weakly.
"No can do" The man shakes his head. "I haven't come across someone like you in centuries, I'll get a pretty penny for ya"
"Jeremy?" Alvina tries to contact him through their connection but doesn't get through, the enchanted iron blocking their bond. Alvina tries to bury her fear as she thinks of a way to get out of this. "Where are you taking me?" Alvina whispers barely having enough energy to speak in a normal tone.
"Don't know yet" He shrugs trudging through the mud towards his truck. "I'm going to see how much the council will pay for you and then I'm gonna see how much Augustine will pay for you"
"Augustine?" Alvina asks tiredly.
"Yeah, nasty lot they are" The man nods. "You better pray the council will get ya because if you go to Augustine, you'll be in for one long road of pain"
Before Alvina could ask any questions they reach his van. Alvina sees a cage and she can only assume that it's made from the same material the net is made out of. The man sets her on the ground and opens the net. She tries to escape but he easily over powers her and tosses her into the cage locking her up.
"Well, well, well, look at you" Alvina slowly lifts her head seeing Pearl standing outside of the cage. "You better get used to these bars" Pearl smirks. Alvina growls glaring at her.
"I'm going to kill you" Alvina growls but Pearl laughs.
"Good luck" Pearl whispers before disappearing. The man that captured her covers the cage with a tarp and begins to drive in town. The tarp flaps and Alvina can see through a sliver of an opening.
She notices them driving into town and Alvina assumes he's going to meet up with either Liz Forbes or Mayor Lockwood. She keeps her eye out for anyone she recognizes knowing she's going to need a miracle if she can get out of this one. If the council finds out who and what she is, they'll kill her. If the man takes her to this 'Augustine' place, she can only imagine the things they'd do to her.
Alvina strains her ears through the sound of the rain and can just barely hear the man talking to Sheriff Forbes. They take their conversation inside and Alvina knows her time is running out. She tries to stick her hand though the cage but the holes at too small and the iron burns her.
"Jeremy!" Alvina yells as loud as her voice will allow her. The wind carries her cry for help right too him before he can enter the grill. He pauses by the door and looks around for her. "Jeremy! Jeremy! I'm over here!" Alvina says frantically. "In the truck! Jeremy, please!"
"Vina?" Jeremy asks approaching the truck hesitantly. He instantly becomes soaked from the rain but doesn't care.
"Jeremy, I'm under the tarp" She trembles. He lowers the tailgate and flips the tarp up. His eyes widen. "You have to get me out of here" She shivers.
"What the hell?" He whispers and notices a lock on the cage. "How'd you get in there, what's going on?"
"Jeremy, I don't have time to explain, please get me out"
"Ok, Ok, I'll be right back" Jeremy says lowering the tarp so no one else notices her in the cage. He quickly moves around the truck looking for anything to break the lock with. He smirks when he find a pair of bolt cutters.
"Jeremy" Alvina whimpers.
"I'm right here, baby" Jeremy reassures her. He flips the tarp back up and quickly breaks the lock. He tosses the cutters to the side and opens the cage. "Come here" He reaches in with his arms open. She shuffles closer to him.
His arms wrap around her and he holds her close to him. He carries her out of the cage and moves quickly away from the truck moments before the other fairy and Sheriff Forbes returns. The moment she's in his arms she feels safe, secure. She grips his jacket, clinging to him as her body shakes from the rain.
"Who was that guy?" Jeremy asks finding some shelter from the rain. He sets her down on the ground and against one of the buildings.
"I-I don't know" She stutters slightly while rubbing her arms. He instantly takes his jacket off and wraps it around her. "He's a fair, like me, but full blooded"
"Why is he after you?" He asks.
"He's a hunter, Pearl tipped him off on where I was. He's gonna sell me to the council or this place called 'Augustine'" Jeremy frowns his eyebrows never having heard of the latter. "Jeremy, he's a full Fairy. We have to get as far away from him as possible. I'm sure he can still sense me, the rain is keeping him from following my scent but he'll be able to hear us once he realizes I'm gone"
"Ok, we go back to the boarding house-"
"No, you're place." Alvina says instantly. "Pearl can't get into your house and that man won't risk going into a neighborhood as a fairy"
"Alright, my place" Jeremy says picking her back up. She curls into his arms and he tightens his grip. He moves quickly but if feels like ages before they're finally within the safety of their home.
"Why would a fairy hunt another fairy?" Jeremy asks.
"I'm a half breed, to full bloods, I shouldn't be alive" Alvina explains angering Jeremy. "He'll keep coming for me, Jeremy" She whispers.
In all the months Jeremy's known Alvina he's never seen her scared like this. Whoever this guy is truly scares her. It angered him when he thinks about how close he was to losing her.
"He's not going to get you, I promise" Jeremy says resting her on his bed. He kneels in front of her and takes her head in his hands. "I won't let him."
"He has this... material" Alvina frowns her eyebrows. "I've never come across it before"
"What is it?" Jeremy asks.
"He called it 'Enchanted Iron'" She explains. "It weakened me, I couldn't use my abilities, I couldn't reach out to you" She whispers tears filling her eyes. "I was completely vulnerable and weak. All I could think about was what he was gonna do, who he was gonna sell me too. I couldn't figure out a way to get back to you" She sniffles trying to keep in control of her emotions.
"It's alright, it's alright, you're safe now" Jeremy whispers sitting beside her. She cries curling into his arms. "I've got you now" He mutters rocking them slowly. "I've got you"
"I love you, Jeremy" She whispers hugging him tightly. He kisses the top of her head.
"I love you, too" He whispers back resting his head on top of hers. "It's gonna be alright, baby, I'm not gonna let anything happen to you"
