*Chapter Forty Three* {The House Guest}
"At least he's not mad at us," Alvina whispers, threading her fingers through Jeremy's hair. Her mate snuggles closer to her, his head nuzzling into her neck. Enzo, who's laying beside them on his side, places a gentle kiss on Jeremy's sleeping head.
"No, he's just trying to be the silent game's world champion," Enzo grumbles. Alvina smirks a bit.
"It's a lot to take in, he'll talk when he's ready," She whispers, trailing her finger tips down Jeremy's arm while using her fingernails on the opposite hand to massage his head.
"Whoever this Niklaus Mikaelson is, he better be worth all the trouble," Enzo growls. Alvina hums silently. The three of them lay in silence, Jeremy's soft snores being the only sound in the room.
"What are the odds that M.P. is gonna turn out normal and easy?" Alvina wonders. Enzo glances down at his tattooed forearm.
"With our luck, he'll be just as much of a pain in the ass as the rest of us," Enzo mutters. Alvina hums, leaning her head against Jeremy's.
"Out poor baby is gonna have to put up with so much shit," She whispers.
"He definitely drew the short straw to get stuck with us," Enzo comments. Alvina's eyes glance towards him.
"At least his life won't be boring," Alvina whispers. Enzo smiles, extending his arm to rest on hers. Alvina turns her hand up and brushes her fingers against his skin. "I love you... We both do," She tells him.
"And I love you both," Enzo reassures her. His arm slithers around her waist and pulls them both against him, Jeremy squished securely between them. "Now, what?" Enzo growls, hearing a disruption from somewhere in the house. Alvina ignores it until the voices become loud enough for Jeremy to hear. Alvina watches him stir but luckily he continues to sleep.
"Stop it, Katherine!" Stefan shouts, catching Alvina's attention. She briefly wondered when Katherine had escaped the tomb. The shouting continued which annoys Alvina as Jeremy threatens to wake up.
"Oh, for fuck's sakes," Alvina growls, shuffling away from Jeremy but Enzo holds her still.
"Stay with him, I'll go check it out," Enzo says, sliding off the bed. Alvina sighs having wanted to go threaten the others but lets Enzo go handle it.
"We all want the same thing... Klaus dead," Katherine's voice reaches Enzo's ear. Enzo pauses outside the room. "Yet here you all are, running around like chickens with their heads cut off,"
"I don't need your help and I don't want it," Elena argues.
"And that's incredibly stupid of you. Do you know where Klaus is? When he's coming, what he looks like?" Katherine questions.
"If you know something, say it or get out," Damon demands.
"Fine," Katherine sighs. "Then I'll just go to the Grill and have some lunch... Maybe Aunt Jenna's free for a bite," Katherine smirks walking out of the room and right into Enzo's chest.
"Word of advice," Enzo tells her. She pauses, sending him a cautious yet curious look. "Unless you want to have another round of fairy venom, I'd stay away from Jenna," Katherine pales slightly as she recalls the torture and pain Alvina had put her threw with a mere bite.
Wordlessly, Katherine steps around Enzo and exits the home. Enzo watches until she's out of sight before walking into the room where Stefan, Damon and Elena are.
"So, she's out and about," Enzo comments. Stefan shrugs a bit but looks thoroughly annoyed. Enzo could see the weight bearing down on Stefan's shoulders, a weight they've all been carrying for a while.
"Where's Jeremy?" Elena asks, her eyes searching behind Enzo for her brother.
"In bed sleeping," Enzo tells her. "He had a... rough night," He explains, vaguely. Elena instantly looks uncomfortable as her mind instantly goes to the dirty. Enzo smirks a bit catching her line of thought by the blush on her cheeks. He would rather have had Jeremy exhausted by the acts Elena is trying to avoid thinking.
"He has school..." Elena reminds him. Enzo shakes his head going to cut her off. School is the last thing Enzo cares about. After the information Jeremy has just been fed, he deserves a day off to get his thoughts straight. Although, Elena doesn't know that because she's still in the dark on the whole soulmate thing. Something everyone's agreed to keep from her.
"Why don't you let Alvina and I take care of him while you focus on yourself," Enzo cuts her off a bit sterner than intended. He simply wanted her to get off of Jeremy's back without revealing the true story. Although, he isn't exactly worried about hurting her feelings nor offending her. Elena purses her lips before walking out of the room, Stefan following after her.
"So, what are you doing out here?" Damon asks him. Enzo arches an eyebrow. "I don't think I've ever seen you without Thing One or Thing Two by your side," Damon teases.
"Well, I came to see what all the shouting was about," Enzo tells him. "You're lucky Jeremy has a good grip on Alvina or else you'd have a very annoyed fairy to deal with," Damon smirks a bit before brushing past Enzo. "So, still planning on finding a way to get Klaus out of this alive?" Enzo asks, following him into the Parlor. "You gave Alvina your word-"
"I know," Damon cuts him off. "It's easier said than done," He sighs walking behind the bar. "Have you heard the stories of this guy? He doesn't exactly sound like the easiest person to stop,"
"If we can't figure this out, we're gonna have one nasty war on our hands," Enzo tells him. Damon spares him a glance before grabbing the bourbon. "If it comes down between him and Elena, you know where Alvina stands," Damon glances at him. "Jeremy's going to get caught in the middle, Stefan's going to fight for Elena and I'm going to protect my mates. If it comes down to it, where are you going to stand?" Enzo questions. Damon clenches his jaw.
"Well, I'm taking suggestions on what to do," Damon snips, feeling the pressure of the situation bearing on his shoulders. "Any ideas?"
"What does Elijah say?" Enzo asks, crossing his arms over his chest.
"Elijah's out of the equation and even when he was he wanted Klaus dead," Enzo raises an eyebrow at him but doesn't comment on the matter. "Look, the last thing I want to do is hurt Alvina but I'm running out of options here," Damon tells him.
"If I were you, I'd take Elena and leave. Let her live life normally and out of Klaus's grasp," Enzo suggests but Damon slowly shakes his head.
"And then she lives her life on the run," Damon explains. "Besides, her life is here. She won't just leave Jeremy behind. She won't just leave her home to run away,"
"Ok, well... She could always become a vampire," Enzo suggests, but Damon shoots the idea down.
"She doesn't want too," Damon tells him. "She values her humanity, doesn't want to become like us,"
"Damon, if she stays here she's going to die," Damon clenches his jaw. "She may have you, Bonnie, Stefan, and Caroline looking after her but compared to what I've learned about Klaus, compared to Alvina, none of you will stand a chance," Enzo says. "And if Alvina gets involved, I'll have to as well," Damon sighs, drowning his drink.
"Yeah, I see the picture," Damon grumbles. Enzo watches him, pressing his lips together. "And what does Jeremy think about all this?" Enzo shrugs.
"He hasn't said a word since we talked last night," Enzo tells him. "We've explained everything we know to him and he's... processing,"
"And did you promise him to protect Elena?" Damon wonders, giving him a pointed look. Enzo's eyes narrow slightly.
"We told him we would do everything in our power to keep her alive but even he isn't naïve enough to know that Alvina and I can't truly go against Niklaus, not even for his sister," Enzo explains, an edge to his voice as Damon begins to get under his skin. "He's conflicted just like the rest of us," Damon sighs loudly and takes a big drink of bourbon.
Enzo studies his friend for a moment. The look of conflict is one he's grown accustomed too. He wished that Elena was another person. Anybody that wasn't his mate's sister, best friend's brothers girlfriend and best friends interest. However, if there's one thing he's learned in all his years is that the world is never kind.
"I wish it wasn't Elena, I truly do," Enzo tells him truthfully. "Either way, Jeremy is going to get hurt and I don't like that thought,"
Damon spares him a sympathetic look. Enzo returns it with a tight lipped smile. Damon felt bad for a moment about trying to ruffle his feathers over Enzo's promise to protect Elena despite knowing he might not be able to do it. He knew Enzo is loyal to a fault and failing to protect Elena will haunt him despite not truly liking the human girl.
"But in regards to which side you should stand on, look at things this way," Damon turns towards him more, his attention completely on Enzo. "Ask yourself this; are you going to side with a woman you just met and will be in your life for a few decade? Or the woman you've known for a life time and will know for many more in the future?"
Damon sighs, a small barely noticeable pang of guilt hitting him when his mind instantly sides with his fairy and not the woman he's been working to protect.
"Elena will die, if not by Klaus's hand than by someone or something else. If you side against Alvina, against me, and try to kill our mate... Will you be gaining as much as you'll be losing?" Damon sighs heavily, Enzo's words hitting him hard. "Besides, it's not like Elena Gilbert is the woman etched onto your arm," Damon's eyes glance down his his tattoo. "If you're asking me, friend to friend, you're wasting your time on the wrong people. In my opinion, you should start focusing on those who actually matter instead of those that are only going to be around for a brief moment in your life,"
"I hate it when you make since," Damon grumbles, lifting his glass to his lips. Enzo smirks, stepping back.
"Food for thought," Enzo shrugs, a sly smirk on his face knowing he's gotten to Damon. "Another piece of advice-"
"You should be a guidance counselor with all this advice you're giving me," Damon jabs.
"Call Emilia," Enzo continues without missing a beat. "I'm sure she'd love to hear from you," Damon frowns just a bit when he realizes that it's been a few weeks since he's called her. They've texted here and there but he realizes that he's missed the sound of her voice. "Tell her I said hi," Enzo says, leaving the parlor to return to his own mates leaving his raven haired friend to make a phone call.
When Enzo enters the room, his heart swells at the sight of his mates. Alvina seems to have dozed off in his absence. The two of them seemed even more snuggled together, under the comforter as they try to avoid the sun shining through the slit of the curtains.
Enzo adjusts the curtains for maximum darkness before sliding into bed. He doesn't fall asleep but he does fall into his mind. He thinks about his time in Augustine, his visibly flinches more than once at the rougher memories.
He smiles when he remembers them bringing Emilia into the cell beside his. She was a breath of fresh air, a firecracker. She had dimmed over the years but they could never put the fire out. She always spoke of escaping and getting her revenge. When she wasn't talking about that, she talked about the world and wondered how it changed. She has a desire for adventure but something tells him her adventures will lead her back to him. Only he knew she wasn't returning for him but for a certain dark haired moron.
Shuffling snaps him out of his thoughts. He turns his head watching Jeremy roll toward him. He smiles as he watches his eyes flutter open.
"Good morning," Enzo grumbles, lowly. Jeremy hums, shifting closer to his vampire. "How are you feeling?"
"Emotional," Jeremy mumbles, causing Enzo to chuckle quietly.
"We're going to be alright, my love," Enzo promises, holding him against his chest. "I don't know how this is going to work out but it will,"
"I wish I had your confidence," Jeremy whispers, nuzzling into his chest.
"I just need you to trust me. Trust me and Alvina," Enzo whispers, rubbing his back.
"I do," Jeremy mumbles. "But what I don't want to do is leave this bed," Enzo smirks, kissing the top of his head.
"Then this bed is where we shall reside for the day," Enzo promises.
