*Chapter Forty Nine* {The Last Day}
"Are you positive Elena will survive?" Jeremy asks, sitting on the bed. His eyes are glued on Alvina as she slips her shirt over her head. She meets his gaze as she pushes her arms through the sleeves.
"She's going to be just fine, baby," Alvina promises. She walks up to him, her hands grazing his cheeks on their way to his hair. His hands come up to hold her wrists. "Bonnie is going to make sure she lives. She has a backup plan if the elixir fails. Elena will be safe,"
Jeremy smiles up at her. Alvina lowers to place a kiss on his forehead. Her lips linger as her hand lightly massages his head. Jeremy sighs, soaking up her affection until she pulls away from him.
"I know Stefan and Elena were planning on spending the day together but you should crash their party... Spending some time with her. You'll probably feel better," Jeremy sighs but slowly nods.
"Need to pick up my brotherly duty and annoy her for a while," Jeremy smirks.
"Exactly," She winks at him.
"And what will you two do?" Jeremy asks as she steps away from him.
"Make sure everything's in place for tonight, we don't want any surprises." Enzo tells him.
"Bonnie's dealing with a pretty big spell, I want to make sure she's prepared. She might need my help with something," Alvina tells him.
Jeremy nods, standing up. He grabs his jacket and slips it on. Alvina nibbles at her lip for a moment before speaking up. Jeremy turns to her.
"When Klaus comes to get Elena... Don't fight him," Alvina tells him. She hated how his expression fell but she felt the need to say this. She didn't want him doing something rash at the last second. "He won't hurt you but he's a resourceful man. He'll get her one way or another. Please, trust Bonnie to keep her alive," Jeremy lowers his gaze but nods. Alvina sighs, giving Enzo a look.
"I should get going, Stefan's probably at the house by now," Jeremy says, moving toward the door but Enzo steps in front of him. Jeremy avoids his gaze until Enzo gently pinches his encouraging him to make eye contact.
"We're not going to lose tonight, darling," Enzo promises. "Everything will go according to plan, everyone we love will make it out of this," He states, holding Jeremy's gaze for a moment before pulling him in for a tight hug. Enzo turns his head slightly, kissing the side of Jeremy's head. "I love you,"
Jeremy pulls back, giving Enzo a small kiss before stepping back. Jeremy glances back at Alvina, who gives him a grin. She skips up to him when he opens his arms. He gives her hug a tight squeeze before leaving to find his sister.
"I should get going too, Bonnie's going to be expecting me any minute now,"
"Go, I'll be fine," Enzo assures her. Alvina smiles, wrapping her arms around his waist. He kisses the top of her head before letting her go to find Bonnie.
Elijah has a small home not far from the Salvatore's place. Alvina's not entirely sure if it's actually his or not but that's where he's been staying. It's out of sight and not easily found. A perfect place for Bonnie and Elijah to have time to themselves without someone interrupting them.
When she arrives she find both Elijah and Bonnie inside the main room. Elijah is conversing with someone over the phone while Bonnie is looking over a grimoire.
"Hey, V," Bonnie greets, lookin up from the book. Alvina perks at the nickname. "How's Jeremy and Elena?"
Elijah turns to Alvina, giving her a small smile before taking his call into the other room wanting to give you two some privacy. Alvina walks deeper into the room and perches herself on the cushion beside Bonnie.
"They're spending the day together. Jeremy's... Anxious but he trusts you and our plan," Alvina assures her. "Have you been practicing?"
"Elijah's volunteered to be my guinea pig," Bonnie teases, causing Alvina to smirk. "When the time comes, I'll be able to get into his head,"
"Get the information that you need and get out," Alvina advises, as gently as she can manage not particularly liking the idea of her rooting around her mates mind. "The information you're looking for will be fairly close to the surface, shouldn't be hard to find,"
"I'll be quick, I promise," Bonnie assures her. "I can show you, if you want," Bonnie suggest, shifting toward her more.
"I trust you, Bonnie," Alvina promises. "But I'll leave my thoughts to myself,"
"I understand," Bonnie nods, not pushing her for more.
"But I am curious as to what this spell requires," Alvina mentions. "I know you can do it, but how are you going too?"
Bonnie begins to fill Alvina in on the part of the plan she didn't already know while Enzo, on the other side of town, searches for Damon. The last time he talked to Damon about where his loyalties lied Damon was uncertain. Enzo didn't know if Damon had some secret plan to sabotage everything in order to keep Elena from doing the ritual.
"I should have known that you would be here," Enzo comments, claiming the seat beside him.
"You're by yourself?" Damon asks, looking around for his counterparts. "Didn't know you could function this far from the others," Damon jests. Enzo smirks ordering a drink. "You have that look on your face, what's up?"
"You haven't been causing any trouble lately, do your batteries need to be changed?" Enzo asks, a lopsided smirk on his lips. Damon laughs sarcastically.
"If you're worried I'm going to do something, don't" Damon tells him. "You were right... As much as I care about Elena I care about Alvina more," Enzo grins a bit. "And on top of that, I need to step back and just let Stefan worry about her. Especially, with Emilia coming to town soon," Damon says, a light grin coming to his lips.
"Good, I won't take all the credit of knocking some sense into you but at least 95%" Enzo declares.
"You're taking 95%?" Damon asks, looking at him. "I deserve more than 5%,"
"Fine, I'll take 94%" Enzo smirks. Damon rolls his eyes drowning his drink.
"Where are your counterparts anyway?" Damon asks, ordering another drink.
"Well, Jeremy is -" Enzo's voice dies in his throat as he senses a new presence behind them. Damon frowns his eyebrows before noticing someone walking up to them.
"Good evening, gentlemen," An accented voice greets. Damon looks at the newcomer before glancing at Enzo's tense form.
"Klaus, I presume?" Damon connects the dots. Enzo slowly turns around looking at his mate for the first time in his own skin.
"In the flesh," Klaus confirms. His eyes move from Damon to Enzo. Enzo leans back against the bar, shamelessly taking in Klaus's appears while casually sipping on his liquor. A smirk comes to Klaus's lips, pride filling his chest as Enzo hardly blinks.
"Oh, God," Damon groans, rolling his eyes. "You're bad enough with Al and Jeremy," Enzo smirks, returning his gaze to his friend.
"We still have one more to find, mate" Enzo tells him.
"If you two will excuse me, I'm going to go scratch my eyes out," Damon states, standing up. Klaus is half tempted to make Damon stay in order to assure himself that he won't intervene with the ritual. However, a glance at Enzo and all he wants is a moment with him.
Enzo motions to the empty seat beside him before turning around. Klaus sits beside him and orders a drink for himself.
"Shouldn't you be getting ready for some ancient ritual?" Enzo asks him.
"I have everything I need, just waiting on the moon," Klaus tells him. "I have to know, is anyone going to try and stop me? I was warned about meeting some resistance,"
"If you're going to get resistance it's going to be through Stefan," Enzo tells him leaving Bonnie and Elijah's plan out. "Jeremy might try something but I know that you won't hurt him," Enzo states, sending him a hard looks.
"He's mine as he is yours, of course I won't hurt him," Klaus assures Enzo. "Physically at least," He mumbles, lowering his head to look into his drink.
"You'll have an eternity to make it up," Enzo assures him. Klaus glances at him, smiling a bit at the thought of having them by his side for so long.
"Has Alvina told you my proposal for after the ritual?" Klaus questions.
"Yes and I'm with her," Enzo tells him. "Whatever Jeremy decides, he'll need both of us after the ritual," Klaus frowns a bit giving Enzo an unsettling feeling. "Bring it up with Jeremy and I'll... talk to him about it," Enzo tells him. Klaus raises his eyebrows. "Once Elena is... gone there won't be much left for him here. He'll just be reminded of what he's lost,"
"And being with me won't remind him?" Klaus asks.
"It's a complicated situation," Enzo tells him. "The closer you two get, with the soul bond and whatever you do to try to make it up to him, he won't hate you forever. Leaving town right after she dies is pretty quick paced but the sooner you start kissing his ass the better," Enzo lightly jokes.
Klaus smiles thoughtfully. He brings the glass up to his lips and drinks the contents. Enzo watches him before slowly reaching out. Klaus tenses when Enzo's hand rests atop of his own igniting their bond.
Enzo smiles feeling Klaus's initials changing color on his inner forearm. Klaus hesitantly turns his palm upward. Enzo stands and gives his hand a gentle squeeze.
"Good luck tonight," Enzo says, before leaving the Mystic Grill. Klaus watches him walk away, a light smirk on his lips.
Once outside, Enzo moves the sleeve covering his marks in order to observe his newly golden initials. His thumb brushes over the mark before he recovers it.
"Enzo," Damon announces, jogging over to him. "I need your help with something,"
"What is it?"
"I need your help with a breakout," Damon states, looking around anxiously for Klaus.
"Damon," Enzo says, warningly.
"Look, Liz can't find Caroline anywhere and I think Klaus took her for his ritual. I have to get her back for her," Damon tells him. "Klaus has to have a spare at this point, right? We just have to get Caroline,"
"Fine, I'll help you get her," Enzo gives in. Damon smirks clapping him on the back. "We need to hurry, time's not on our side,"
Together the two of them make for the woods. Enzo follows him toward the Fell's Church Tomb. Enzo stays out of sight, watching for anyone who will try to stop them while Damon approaches the entrance.
"Which one are you trying to save? The blond, or the wolf? Did you really think Klaus would leave them unprotected?" Klaus's wizard, questions.
"Wishful thinking," Damon shrugs, before rushing the warlock. Damon strangles him for only a few moments before he's thrown back. The warlock stands up but before he can do anything, Enzo appears behind him and snaps his neck. "Couldn't have stepped in sooner?" Damon groans, standing up.
"Thought you had it handled," Enzo smirks, before turning his head to see a human with a gun.
"What are you doing here?" Damon question. Enzo slowly squares himself toward the boy.
"Where's Caroline?" The boy asks, gripping the gun tightly in his hand. Enzo sighs, looking up at the sky noticing it beginning to dim quickly. They didn't have time for this.
"Listen, man. Not a good time to play the hero," Damon tells him. Enzo rolls his eyes when Matt cocks his gun, still aiming it at Damon.
"Where is she?" Matt snaps. "And what did he do to her?"
"I'm just here to rescue her," Damon states, keeping his attention on him. Deciding that they've entertained the boy enough, Enzo rushes him and rips the rifle from his hands. In a swift movement, he knocks the kid out with the gun.
"Oops," Enzo mutters, seeing the boy laying on the ground, his head resting on the grass in an awkward angle. Damon walks up and stands beside him.
"You killed Matt," Damon mutters.
"Hope he wasn't someone important," Enzo mutters, without an ounce of guilt.
"Not necessarily but you've just pissed off a couple of people," Damon warns him.
"As long as those people aren't Alvina, Jeremy and Klaus, I don't care," Enzo tells him.
"Well, Klaus doesn't even know him and I doubt Alvina knows him. Jeremy might be upset but they weren't really close or anything," Damon tells him.
"Well, then, go save your vampire and let's get out of here. The sun's setting, I don't know when Klaus will send someone to pick them up," Enzo tells him.
"Alright, but just a fair warning, the vampire I'm saving was Matt's girlfriend," Damon explains.
"As long as she wasn't his mate then I don't care," Enzo informs him. Damon merely shrugs and jogs down into the tomb. While Damon works on rescuing blondie, Enzo looks back at Matt. "Now, what to do with you?" Enzo whispers.
He glances down at the rifle and takes out the bullets. He frowns noticing the bullets were wooden. Had he gotten the chance, he would have most likely fired a bullet into Damon's heart.
Movement behind him gains his attention. Turning around he sees Damon walking out with two others. He frowns his eyebrows at the random guy with them.
"Who's he?"
"Klaus's werewolf," Damon explains, grumpily.
"Anybody else you would like to liberate, while we're out and about?" Enzo questions, crossing his arms. Damon shoots him a look.
"Anybody else's boyfriend you wanna kill while we're at it?" Damon shoots back.
"Matt!" Caroline falls beside him. Her mouth drops open as her hands hover around his neck, hesitant to touch him. Tyler moves to kneel beside Caroline. His mouth agape, unbelieving that his best friend is laying in front of him dead. "You killed him!?" Caroline screams, glaring at Damon.
Damon's eyes widen a fraction. He holds his hands up and points a finger at Enzo. Caroline's fierce glare shoots toward Enzo. Enzo just shrugs not bothered by her anger. Faster than the eye can process, Caroline launches herself at Enzo but her attack it predictable. His hand wraps around her throat and he lifts her off the ground.
"Is that anyway to treat your rescue team?" Enzo asks, tilting his head. Caroline snarls. "I'm helping you out for Damon, if you attack me when I let you go, I'll rip your heart out and leave you to rot beside your boyfriend... er- ex-boyfriend," Enzo smirks.
"Caroline, now's not the time," Damon says, coming up beside Enzo. Caroline is released and manages to hold herself back from attacking again. She snarls at him but Enzo just stares at her, ready to defend himself should he need too.
"Tyler?" Caroline asks, hearing him groan behind the vampires. Enzo turns toward the werewolf.
"It's starting," Tyler groans.
"Oh, great. Of course, you decide to save a werewolf during a full moon," Enzo glares at Damon. Damon just shrugs.
"We need to get moving," Damon states. "Grab the ex-boyfriend and let's go," Caroline slowly moves towards Matt. Tear well up in her eye as she picks him up
"Ready kiddo's?" Enzo asks, smirking at the two of them before following after Damon.
