*Chapter Forty Four* {Know Thy Enemy}

"Bonnie? What are you doing here?" Alvina asks, finding the Bennett witch standing just inside of the Boarding House. She quickly turns towards the fairy. "Oh God, are you ok?" Alvina questions, concern coursing through her body. Bonnie looked sickly, as if she could barely keep her eyes open and was running an hour of sleep.

"I need to talk to you," Bonnie states, her eyes bouncing around in paranoia. "In private," Alvina doesn't question it.

"Alright, come on," Alvina gently rubs Bonnie's arm while directing her out of the boarding house. The two climb into Bonnie's car, Alvina driving upon insistence. Only when Alvina knows they're outside of earshot does she question Bonnie.

"I need a favor," Bonnie states, fidgeting in her seat. Alvina nods slowly, her eyes glancing towards Bonnie as her mind tries to put together what's going on. Eventually, Alvina pulls the car off to the side and shift to face her.

"Your heart is pounding, try to calm down a little," Alvina says, reaching for her hand. Bonnie grips it tightly while avoiding eye contact. "What's going on? What do you need me to do?" Bonnie opens and closes her mouth multiple times, her mind reeling for the right words. Alvina tries to comfort her but it doesn't seem to really work.

"Do you know where Elijah is?" Bonnie finally whispers, her head hanging down. Alvina pinches her eyebrows.

"Not exactly but Damon was in charge of his body so he shouldn't be too hard to find," Alvina shrugs. "Damon's a lot of things but hiding things is not his forte," Bonnie forces a small smile. "What do you need him for?" Bonnie presses her lips together, her heart rate speeding up once more.

"I can't sleep," She whispers, reluctantly meeting Alvina's gaze. Once their eyes lock, Bonnie finds it impossible to look away. Soon she's suffering from word vomit. "He's in my head, I can't get him out. I tried to keep distance from him but it feels impossible. I don't know who to talk to, I don't know who I can even tell. I can't talk to Elena and I certainly cannot tell Damon and Stefan. I can hardly even admit it myself but I can't not admit it," Bonnie whimpers. "One second he was there and then he was gone and I can't find him and I tried to move on but I can't. I can still... I can still feel him,"

Had Bonnie been to a mere human she would have sounded like a lunatic. However, Alvina instantly picked up on what Bonnie was trying to say. Alvina couldn't help but to feel sympathetic to Bonnie as the witch sits ridged and anxious.

"Bonnie," Alvina whispers, squeezing her hand. "Elijah's your soulmate," She states. Bonnie's eyes close and her head drops.

"I don't know if I can trust him... I know nobody else does... I tried to fight it, to ignore it but..." Bonnie sighs, her head leaning back against the headrest.

"I know," Alvina says, her thumb brushing over Bonnie's skin comfortingly. "You need him back," Bonnie slowly nods.

"And I know he wants Elena to go through with the ritual, I know he has other plans and secrets but maybe I can talk to him. Maybe I can get him to tell us the whole truth, to tell us everything," Bonnie blurts, hopefully.

Alvina takes a moment for the news to settle. Elijah is one of the main people in this equation that wants Klaus dead. He knows how to do it, he has to power to do it. With the dagger in his chest, with him out of the equation, keeping Klaus alive seems more possible. Her entire being is screaming at her to keep Elijah down, to keep him out of the way. It's the logical choice for the safety of her mate.

Then she looks at Bonnie. A blind person could see the desperation in her eyes. She thinks back to when she was so close to finding Enzo. She was so close she could taste it. She remembered how she felt, the desperation. Nothing was going to stop her from getting Enzo and one look at Bonnie told her that she was going to be the same way for Elijah.

Helping Bonnie is the right thing, Alvina knows this. That doesn't make her any less hesitant. As she looks at Bonnie she can tell the witch is confused with her pause. Bonnie didn't know about Alvina's connection to Klaus therefore didn't understand why she was hesitating to help bring Elijah back.

"I'll help you get Elijah," Alvina assures her. The relief Bonnie feels is evident.  "But," Alvina adds regaining her attention. "Klaus lives,"

"What?" Bonnie pinches her eyebrows. "Why do you care about Klaus?" Alvina simply raises an eyebrow and waits for the dots to connect. It takes Bonnie a few moments. "No..." She whispers and Alvina slowly nods. Bonnie leans back a bit, the game changing information settling in her mind. "Does Jeremy know?"

"Enzo and I just told him," Alvina says. "He's obviously conflicted," Bonnie slowly nods. "I've been trying to figure out a way too keep both Klaus and Elena alive but I just don't know how,"

"And if it comes down to it?" Bonnie asks, slowly.

"I choose Klaus," Alvina states with no hesitation. "I know Elena is your friend, I know she's Jeremy's sister, but Klaus is our soulmate. If I can find a way for them both to live, I'll do it. But if I can't..." Alvina simply shrugs.

Bonnie wanted to argue. She wanted to demand for Elena's safety but the argument dies in her throat. Her mind goes to Elijah. She knows if she was in Alvina's place she'd be the same. She loves Elena, they've known each other their entire lives, yet having a soulmate dramatically changes your priorities. Despite Bonnie being hesitant to accept Elijah, even she knows that he's the most important person to her.

"Then we better find a way for them both to live," Bonnie sighs. Alvina's lips slowly turn upwards. Almost instantly, the tension within the car disappeared. The cloud hanging over them left, the weight of the world just got a little lighter.

"If I know Damon, Elijah's hidden somewhere at the Boarding house," Alvina tells her. "Neither of the Salvatore's are home right now,"

"And what about Jeremy and Enzo?" Bonnie asks.

"If they have a problem, they can talk to me about it," Alvina states. Bonnie matches Alvina's grin as the fairy turns the car around. Alvina races down the road because not only does she enjoy the speed but also didn't know how long the Salvatore's would be out of the house.

"You do know I'm mortal, right?" Bonnie asks, gripping the 'Oh Shit' handle as if it were her lifeline.

"I find your lack of faith is disturbing," Alvina smirks. Bonnie sends her a deadpan look which only causes Alvina's grin to widen. Eventually, the fairy slows down as she pulls in front of the house.

"Thank you, for helping me," Bonnie whispers sincerely.

"Thank you for agreeing to try and keep Klaus alive," Alvina replies, shooting her a genuine smile.

"I will admit, it's still hard to wrap my head around it," Bonnie admits. Alvina shrugs nodding her head as the two of them climb out of the car.

"Tell me about it,"

"How long have you known?" Bonnie questions, the two jogging up the steps and strutting through the door.

"A while,"

"Who else knows?"

"Damon, Enzo, and Jeremy," Alvina tells her. "Also you and Elijah," She adds while listening for either of her mates. She hears a shower running and quiet moans. Alvina smirks, yet curses Bonnie for keeping her from joining the fun.

"Not telling Stefan?" Bonnie questions, completely oblivious to what's happening up stairs.

"Stefan's too obsessed with saving Elena. It's all he cares about." Alvina explains heading straight for the door to the basement. "I don't share a relationship with him like I do with Damon. I have Damon's loyalty and while Stefan likes me, I'm not foolish enough to think he'll be on my side of this," Bonnie slowly nods.

"Is that why you didn't tell me?" Bonnie asks, Alvina pauses at the door and turns toward Bonnie.

"You kidnapped a warlock, put him through extreme pain, just to figure out if Elijah was telling the truth on the topic of Klaus's death," Alvina deadpans. "It's the one thing you've been obsessed with since you first found out,"

"Fair point," Bonnie mutters. Alvina smirks a bit.

"I figured since you have Elijah, then you can understand a little bit,"

"If I refused the option of keeping Klaus alive, what would you do?" Bonnie asks. Alvina squares off towards Bonnie.

"I'm not even entirely sure if I trust you now," Alvina admits crossing her arms. "I won't hurt you unless I absolutely have too, Bonnie... I've known Damon for a very long time, we're close. One day, he hits a low point and snaps. Almost kills Jeremy. Because he almost kills Jeremy, I had to physically hold myself back from killing him. I wanted to kill him, I wanted to rip his head from his shoulders for even looking at Jeremy maliciously. You seem nice Bonnie, I want to be friends. But if you try to hurt Klaus, I not exercise the same restraint,"

Bonnie knew Alvina wasn't lying. She could hear it in Alvina's voice, could see it in her eyes. The seriousness sends a wave of fear through her body. She hasn't seen Alvina in action but she's heard stories, they're not pleasant.

"You don't trust me but you're still helping me,"

"I like to think I'm not a complete bitch," Alvina comments turning back to the door. Bonnie smirks. "Besides, I know being mated to Elijah has you questioning who you can trust," Alvina adds, jogging down the steps to the houses lowest level. Bonnie follows. "I don't know if I can trust you but I'm trying to show you that you can trust me. I don't lie, I'll tell you what will get you killed,"

"Yeah, you don't exactly sugarcoat things," Bonnie states. Alvina smirks shaking her head.

"Nope," Alvina boasts, unapologetically. "Now, if I were as original as Damon, where would I hide a body?" Alvina mutters, walking around the large basement. "Where else other than in plain sight?" Alvina smirks finding him easily.

Bonnie releases a gasp at the state Elijah is in. The dagger is in his chest and his clothes are dusted and charred. Alvina assumes Damon had tried to burn him but it obviously didn't work.

Slowly, Alvina glances toward Bonnie. Alvina knew if it were her finding her soulmate in this condition, there would be hell to pay. She could see the anger in Bonnie along with the fear and hesitation.

"I knew about the plan," Bonnie whispers. "I knew what they were going to do with him... He's going to be so mad,"

"I wouldn't if it were me," Alvina states. Bonnie glances at her. "If Jeremy or Enzo had done this to me, I'd be annoyed but I wouldn't be mad. Those are the only two people who can hurt me without retaliation. They could physically rip my heart out and I would still love them with my entire being," Bonnie smiles, although there's still doubt in her eyes. "You could always just leave him like this, not like he's going anywhere,"

"No," Bonnie shakes her head. She takes a breath and walks closer. "I can't just leave him like this,"

"He won't hurt you, he won't be angry... He'll understand. Especially if you two just talk things out," Bonnie sends her another smile. "Take the dagger out, talk things through, and just remember, if Klaus dies I will raise hell," Alvina warns before leaving to give Bonnie some privacy.
