*Chapter Fifty Nine* {The End of the Affair}

"Looks familiar, doesn't it?" Klaus questions Stefan with a taunting tone.

"I can't believe this place is still here," Stefan admits. The small group enters an old quiet bar. There's no one else inside except for an older woman.

"You got to be kidding me," The woman states in disbelief. Her eyes bounce between Klaus and Stefan. She doesn't spare the others a glance just yet.

"So, a hybrid walks into a bar, says to the bartender-"

"Stop," She says, shaking her head. "You may be invincible, but that doesn't make you funny," Klaus's mates simultaneously smirk. "I remember you," She states, turning her attention to Stefan.

"Yeah, you're Gloria," Stefan recognizes. "Shouldn't you be..."

"Old and dead? Now, if I die, who's going to run this place, huh?"

"Gloria's a very powerful witch," Klaus explains.

"I can slow the aging down some - herbs and spells - but don't worry, it'll catch up to me one day,"

"Why don't all of you go to the bar and get yourselves something to drink," Klaus suggests, looking at his mates. "Fix me up something, will you?" Klaus tells Stefan. Enzo, Jeremy, and Stefan move to the bar, but Alvina stays. When Klaus turned his attention to them, so did Gloria. Her eyes instantly fell on Alvina.

"I'll be damned," Gloria mutters. Enzo stops walking and turns back around, having heard the witch. He realizes her attention is on his mate. He stays still, watching the interaction, ready to snap the witch's neck should she prove to be threatening to Alvina. "I've never met one of you before," Gloria moves closer but pauses when Klaus subtly takes a step between them. "I'll deal with you in a moment. She's more interesting,"

Alvina smirks at the flattering comment. Gloria steps closer, Klaus staying back this time but also watching closely.

"I thought your kind were extinct," Gloria tells her.

"They could be, for all I know," Alvina shrugs. "I've only ever met one other than my mother," Jeremy glares at the floor at the thought of the fairy hunter.

"Of course they're not extinct, silly girl," Gloria chides. "You're standing right in front of me,"

"I'm only half-fairy," Alvina explains.

"And you think that makes you lesser?" Gloria arches her eyebrow.

"They're not exactly welcome in the fairy community," Alvina says. "They're thought of as impure, an..." Alvina cuts herself off, not wanting to say the word, especially in front of her temperamental mates.

"Have you ever thought that what they see as flaws are actually your strengths?" Gloria questions. Alvina doesn't answer but contemplates the suggestions.

Does Gloria honestly think that she could be as powerful as a full-blooded fairy? It couldn't be possible.

Firstly, her magic is different from a pureblood's. It's less potent, not as strong. Secondly, her human side lessens her physically. So, no, she couldn't be as strong as purebloods. Right?

"Now, you," Gloria turns her attention to Klaus. "A hybrid out to make more hybrids? That kind of news travels,"

With Gloria's attention off of her, Alvina turns toward Enzo and Jeremy. The contemplative look is still on her face as her mind continues to process her thoughts. Enzo holds out his hand, and she gravitates toward him.

His fingers slide between hers as his lips plant a gentle kiss atop her head. She briefly nuzzles into his side before guiding him closer to the bar. Jeremy sends her a goofy smile succeeding in uplifting her spirits.

Gloria and Klaus continue to talk at one of the tables behind them while Stefan slowly makes the drinks. As he slides the glasses towards the three on the opposite side of the bar, Alvina notices a picture.

"Stefan," She whispers, keeping her gaze on the picture. He glances at her before following her eyes. When he sees it, he rips it from the wall.

"What is this?" He asks, gaining Klaus's attention.

"Well, I told you, Stefan. Chicago's a magical place," Klaus smirks.

"But this is me... With you," Stefan lifts the picture.

"Well, that answers a few things," Enzo mutters, lifting the glass to his lips.

"Let's take a trip, shall we?" Klaus suggests, his eyes scanning over his mates before moving to the exit. Stefan marches right after him, determined to get answers.

Alvina and Gloria share another look before the former leaves the bar with her mates.

Klaus leads them back to the warehouse, where Stefan continues to pester him with questions that go unanswered.

"Your sister... So, I knew another Original vampire," Stefan says.

"If you can't handle it, then don't ask," Klaus deadpans. He leads them toward one of the coffins. Alvina steps forward as Klaus opens it. Inside she sees a beautiful desiccated woman. Alvina's eyes glance at Klaus as he looks at his sister with adoration.

"I don't recognize her," Stefan mutters, his voice hesitant. Alvina's eyes move to him, and she can see the conflicted look on his face.

"Well, don't tell her that. Rebekah's temper is worse than mine," Klaus grins. "Time to wake up, little sister," She remains unconscious. "Any day now, Rebekah... She's being dramatic," Klaus rolls his eyes.

"Look, why don't you just tell me what the hell is going on? I mean, you obviously want me here for a reason, right?" Stefan snaps.

"Well, you have many useful talents,"

"Do I?"

"In fact, I learned some of my favorite tricks from you. I was your number one fan," Klaus tells him, walking away from his sister.

"Why should I believe any of this?" Stefan asks, following right after him.

"When she wakes up, tell her to meet us at Gloria's Bar," Klaus compels a human man while ignoring Stefan. "Then volunteer your carotid artery and let her feed until you die,"

"Where are you going?"

"You think I'm lying, Stefan. You and I knew each other. You trusted me with one of your secrets, and now I'm going to prove it to you,"

"How?"

"We're going to your old apartment,"

It didn't take them long to get to the rundown apartment building. Klaus and Stefan take the lead, with the other three following after them.

"What a charming little homestead," Klaus says. He approaches a door but pauses before going in. The door is already open. Klaus glances at Stefan before entering. "Do you feel that?" He questions. "Is anybody here?"

"It's been vacant for decades. People must break in all the time. Why'd you bring me here?" Stefan questions, looking around the apartment.

"Your friend, Liam Grant, the one who drank his wife's blood..." Jeremy grimaces at the mental image. "I never could figure out why you wanted his name. And then you told me your little secret. It was all part of your special little ritual," Klaus smirks.

"To write it down," Stefan whispers, remembering.

"And relive the kill... over and over again," Klaus opens a hidden door. Stefan steps closer until he enters the hidden room. Klaus steps away. He doesn't notice Stefan tensing, but Alvina does. She shifts ever so slightly to see what's startled him.

Her eyes widen a fraction at seeing Elena hidden in the corner. She knew if Elena is here, then Damon's not far away. Alvina's jaw clenches. Of course, that raven-haired moron wouldn't listen to her.

"You believe me now?" Klaus asks.

"Look what I found," Stefan says loudly. Klaus turns to see Stefan holding up a bottle. "1918. Single malt,"

"My favorite," Klaus smirks, taking the bottle from him. "Let's go and find someone to pair it with,"

"Why don't you three go ahead," Alvina suggests. "Jeremy and I will hang back," Klaus arches his eyebrows. "Alcohol and blood aren't really a mix we're looking for," She shrugs. "We'll catch up later,"

"Don't have too much fun," Enzo smirks, winking at her before leaving the apartment. Klaus looks between Alvina and Jeremy before nodding. He follows Enzo out with a reluctant Stefan behind him.

"They're gone," Alvina says loudly. Jeremy frowns her eyebrows at her but watches as she reopens the door to the hidden room.

"Elena," Jeremy whispers. The siblings smile at each other before quickly embracing the other. Alvina hangs back, letting the two have a private moment.

"Are you alright?" Elena asks, pulling from the hug first. Her eyes look him over.

"I'm fine," He assures her. "What are you doing here?" He asks. "Don't you understand what will happen if Klaus finds out your alive?" He snaps. "We've been following him all over America to keep him away from you, and here you are," He glares at her, his happiness quickly turning into frustration. "These past few months will be for nothing because you're too stupid to stay away!"

"I just want you and Stefan to come home," Elena whispers. "I miss you, Jer... Aunt Jenna misses you... We want you home," Jeremy's expression softens.

"I can't come home," Jeremy tells her. "Look, if Klaus finds you, he will kill you. You need to go home, live your life and be there for Jenna. She needs you,"

"She needs us both," Elena insists. Jeremy smiles and pulls her into another tight hug.

"I'm not going back," He whispers to her. "My place is here, with my mates," He tells her. He pulls back and steps away. "You need to go back to Mystic Falls," He says.

"Jeremy... Please," Elena whispers. He gives her a sad smile.

"I love you, Elena," Jeremy says before walking out of the apartment. She goes to follow, but Alvina steps in her way.

"I'm tired of having this conversation with you, Elena," Alvina says. "I've already told you that I would try to get Stefan out of Klaus's grasp, but it would take time. I've also told you that down the road, Jeremy can come to see you. But do you listen? No. Coming here is dangerous. It's not just dangerous for you but all of us. You could ruin everything because of your impatience and your selfishness,"

"Is it so bad to want my family back together? Haven't I lost enough?" Elena asks.

"You being here puts the remainder of your family in danger, Elena. When will you realize that?... Yes, you have lost a lot for someone so young, but you have so much more you can and will lose if you continue to act like this," Alvina explains to her. "I know this is hard, but that's life; it's full of hard decisions. You doing this makes everything harder, especially on Jeremy. So, why don't you give him a break and a piece of mind and go back to Mystic Falls,"

"Not until I talk to Stefan," Elena shakes her head. Alvina sighs slowly.

"I understand I can't make you do one thing or another," Alvina admits. "But if your actions prove to be dangerous to any of my mates, I will kill you."

"Endangering them isn't my goal," Elena says, stepping back.

"It might not be, but actions have consequences," Alvina tells her. "Now, before I leave, where's that single-brain celled moron and his lovely mate?"

"Where do you think?" Elena asks, lifting her eyebrows. "They're looking for Stefan," Alvina pouts, and Elena rolls her eyes. "They know that if they find Stefan, they'll find Klaus, and that will lead them to you and Enzo," Alvina lights up a bit before rolling her eyes.

"And here I thought Emi would be able to reign the idiot in, not join him on his crusades," Alvina mutters, walking toward the door. "Behave Elena... If you can,"

Alvina walks out of the building and finds Jeremy pacing on the sidewalk. Alvina sighs silently and steps into his path. He looks at her. He smiles, but Alvina can see the pain in his eyes.

"Baby..." Alvina whispers, lifting her hands to caress his face. He closes his eyes, raising his own hands to wrap around her wrists. She smiles when his head turns to kiss her palm.

"We should meet up with the others before they come looking for us," Jeremy mutters. Alvina slowly nods but doesn't move. His eyes open after pressing his forehead against hers. She kisses his lips softly.

"Come on... Maybe we can manage some fun before shit goes down," She winks at him. Jeremy smiles and lets her drag him down the street.

When they make it to the bar, it's filled with people. Alvina holds onto his hand tightly and leads him through the crowd. When they reach the three men, they see them all taking a shot.

"Well, now I feel left out,"

"Sweetheart!" Klaus grins. "Come, join us," He beckons both of them forward. Alvina goes to sit, but her eyes catch a familiar girl sitting at the bar.

"Why don't you sit down, baby," Alvina tells Jeremy. "And I'll go get our next round," She kisses his cheek, winks at her other two mates, and heads for the bar. "Emilia, you look stunning as always," Alvina compliments while shoving the man sitting on the adjacent barstool. He tries to argue but scurries off when catching a brief glimpse of Alvina's vicious pointy teeth.

"I was never into women, but that look is just sexy," Emilia flirts. Alvina winks and sits down.

"As lovely as it is to see you, what are you doing here?" Alvina asks.

"Well, I was all for staying in Mystic Falls, but as you probably know, Damon is very stubborn," Emilia says. Alvina snorts and nods. "He's very adamant on getting you, Stefan, Jeremy, and Enzo back to the Falls,"

"Everyone's so impatient," Alvina sighs. "He's going to get himself killed,"

"That's what I'm hoping to avoid," Emilia says.

"We can only keep Klaus looking the other way for so long," Alvina tells her. "If she and Damon keep coming around, they'll be found. If that happens, then people will actually die,"

"I know," Emilia grumbles. "I'll try and get them to leave, but you know how they are," Alvina hums and flags Gloria down. "I'll see you around," Emilia mutters before slipping into the crowd.

Alvina grabs the drinks she ordered and returns to the table. She notices that Stefan's missing but doesn't mention it. Halfway through their drink and Damon appears beside them. Alvina instantly glares at him.

"I see they've opened the doors to the riff-raff now," Klaus says.

"Oh, honey, I've been called worse," Damon smirks. Alvina looks around and notices the bar is emptying after Gloria shouted the last call. She also notices Emilia lingering in the background, looking anxious. Alvina didn't blame her.

"You don't give up, do you?"

"Well, you took my only brother, best friend, and long-lost cellmate," Damon shrugs. "Give them back along with the teenager; schools gonna start up here soon, ya know, and you'll never have to see me again," Damon promises.

"Well, I am torn," Klaus states. "You see, I promised those people I wouldn't let you die, but how many freebies did I really sign up for?" He wonders, causing Enzo and Alvina to share a look. "And clearly you want to die; otherwise, you wouldn't be here, so..."

"What can I say? I'm a thrill-seeker," Damon smirks.

The next few moments move so fast Jeremy has a hard time keeping up. First, Klaus's hand strikes out to grab Damon's throat. This triggers Emilia's need to protect her mate, and she comes rushing forward. Knowing that Klaus wouldn't hesitate to kill her if she interfered, Enzo meets her halfway and holds her back.

Thirdly, Alvina transforms into her fairy faster than Jeremy's seen her do. She's both stronger and faster in this form. She uses her strength to grab Klaus's wrist. With slight difficulty, she's able to separate him from Damon. When they're separated, Alvina grabs Damon and throws him to the other side of the bar while staying in front of Klaus. Her stance is defensive, but her expression is calm.

"You're not the first person to want to kill Damon," Alvina states. Enzo releases Emilia. In a second, she's beside Damon. "And you won't be the last," Alvina promises. "But like the others, I can't let you go through with it,"

"We had a deal, love," Klaus reminds her. "I don't kill Damon; he stays out of our way,"

"Congratulations," Alvina laughs stiffly. "You've realized what we all know; he's an idiot,"

"Hey," Damon protests, but Emilia violently pinches his arm. He squeals but silences himself when his mate glares at him.

"Don't kill him," Alvina pleads. "If anyone is going to kill him down the road, it's either going to be Emilia or me," Alvina admits. "But not you," Klaus and Alvina stare at each other.

There are a few tense moments before his eyes turn to Damon. He sees the way Emilia stands in front of him protectively how her arms are behind her to keep Damon in place. His eyes then go to Enzo, then glance to the side at Jeremy before returning to Alvina.

When would they finally reach the stage where they trust and protect him as fiercely as Emilia trusts and protects Damon?

While Klaus understood the slow progress, he was losing his patience. He had hoped that things would have been further along by now.

"You don't have to negotiate your brother's freedom," Klaus says, looking back at Damon. "When I'm done with him, he won't want to go back," He smirks as he creates more distance between himself and Damon. Everyone in the bar relaxes.

'Thank you' Alvina lips to Klaus before turning to Damon and Emilia. She subtly nods to the door. Damon's hesitant but Emilia drags him outside.

"Rebekah should be awake by now," Klaus states, watching Alvina return to her human form. "Fetch Stefan," He says.

Once they found Stefan, they returned to the warehouse. Klaus takes the lead with his mates a few paces behind them. Stefan stays around the corner.

"Rebekah... it's your big brother. Come out, come out, wherever you are," Klaus sings. Suddenly, she appears in front of Klaus and goes to stab him with a dagger but is stopped by Enzo. He was able to anticipate this, knowing that some kind of retaliation would happen. Knowing she would be stronger, he settled for snapping her wrist before she had the chance to defend herself.

Rebekah gasps and drops the dagger. She growls and moves towards Enzo, but this time Klaus stops her.

"Easy now," Klaus soothes. "It wouldn't have killed me,"

"Yeah, but it would have hurt," Rebekah grumbles, glaring at Enzo. She then notices Alvina and Jeremy. "Who are these people?"

"These are my mates," Klaus tells her. Her eyes snap back to him. "Enzo, Alvina, and Jeremy," A look of awe and a hint of happiness come to her eyes.

"Your mates?" She whispers, and Klaus smiles, nodding. "And where's mine?"

"You can come in," Klaus says loudly. Alvina's eyes widen as Stefan walks into the room, and Rebekah's eyes light up. Klaus steps up to Stefan and presses his hand on his shoulder. "Now you remember," He compels.

"Rebekah," Stefan whispers as all the memories come rushing back to him.

"Stefan," She smiles, racing into his arms.
