Running towards the house in only a large shirt, I quickly entered, expecting bullets to be flying.
Instead, all I can see is a man, probably in his fifties, shouting at a crying Claudia, who was hiding a sobbing Ivy from the drunk man.
"Hey, what's going on?" I asked, trying to divert the attention, so that Ivy could run off and hide in the closet, like I had instructed on the first day of my stay.
"Okay, Ivy? If we are ever under attack, or something bad is happening, I want you to run as fast as you can to the closet, got it? But only if I say 'hey, what's going on?'. Do you understand that? Its extremely important,"
Ivy nodded, her brown hair covering her blue eyes.
"So what do you have to do in a scary situation?" I asked, just to make sure she had understood what I had said.
I mean, it is a lot to ask for from a seven year old child, I thought sympathetically.
"If we are attacked, wait for you to say 'hey, what's going on?'. When you say it, hide in the closet under the stairs," she muttered, her eyebrows scrunched up in concentration.
"Good girl!" I said, pulling her into a hug while flipping the hair away from her eyes, her arms wrapping around me almost instantly.
"Don't worry Alueda, this is just my ex-husband," Claudia said, wiping her tears as she pointed towards the wasted man opposite her.
I could tell she wasn't happy about him being here, but that she really didn't want me to get in between her nightmare.
"You must be Cameron's girlfriend! I wish I was there when he first brought you home... You seem like a very pretty lady," the drunkster commented, giving me a wink.
Disgusting, I thought, my insides churning in repugnance as I put my face in blank.
"Tell me dear, where is my dear son? And my daughter? Oh, she was always so beautiful... I wonder how she looks now!" He slurred, making me realise exactly why Claudia had been so tense when I entered.
It was pretty obvious he didn't have any good intentions, and just the mention of Ivy... He was a serious bastard, I realised, the disgust intensifying.
"Hey, mate? Can you do me a favour and leave?" I asked politely, fighting the urge to cross my arms over my chest knowing it would only make Elsu's shirt rile up my thigh.
He looked at me, staring at me without any emotion.
"You don't own the house."
That took be aback. He seemed sober, as if his addiction to alcohol was a fraud.
"Maybe not, but I am staying here, so get the fuck out or I'm calling the police," I warned, my eyes scanning the room to take in anything I could use if he decided to attack.
His glare intensified, his face contorting into one of realization, as if something had just clicked in his mind.
"You're not my son's girlfriend, are you? You don't deserve such an amazing man... You're just a lab rat," He sneered, making me take a step back.
Memories suddenly flooded my mind.
"You seriously believe a lab rat can take us out?" One of the men spat, his voice full of venom.
"Yes," I mustered out, my wings spreading wide as eight armed me jumped on top of me, most of them getting small cuts of poison.
The one that had spoken laughed, his irritating voice playing with me, "Oh, come on, you're just an experiment, a test to defy human nature... You aren't even real. You're just a bunch of cells misplaced,"
Grabbing the two guns from my pockets, I twirled, shooting all eight of the men attacking me, before turning around and staring at the man.
"Does this feel real?" I asked, sending him a punch, knocking him towards the floor, before shooting him.
Then I realised something.
That man hadn't been the only one to call me lab rat, it had been all of them.
Well, the ones that had had a chance to speak, I thought arrogantly, happy to not have let those idiots mutter a word.
"Okay, if you do not get out of this house right now, I am arresting you," I said, my eyes not wavering from the drunk man in front of me.
"And what will you say, eh, lab rat?" He said smugly, his eyes shining in defyinance.
"Oh, I won't take you to the police... I'll take you to HOMELUA, so that you can visit your lovely friends..." I replied, smiling at him.
Next time, I'm putting shorts on, I decided, the ache to cross my arms intensifying.
"That seemed to catch his attention, because the next thing I knew, he was taking long strides towards me, his arm up, getting ready to punch me.
"Eliot! Stop that! She is our son's girlfriend, so act proper, will you?" Claudia intervened, the fear from before long gone as she walked towards us, standing in between us.
"You're going out with Cam Cam? Oh, I'm going to have a serious talk with him when he gets back from his friends house," He said, his eyes clouding as he sent me a glare, making me internally shiver.
Was I really that bad?
Sticking my head up high despite my insecurities, I glared back at him, my voice never wavering, "Shut the fuck up and get the hell out. Just because there isn't any evidence of you trying to kill us, does not mean I can't pull you in,"
He didn't move an inch, his eyes travelling over Claudia's head as she tried pushing us apart.
"Please go away Eliot, I can't handle this right now," Claudia said, her voice tired.
That seemed to make him realise what was happening, his eyes leaving mine and travelling to Claudia, "I'll leave, but know that I'll be back, and if luck is on your side, you'll be far gone." He said, looking at me, "Or I'll make you. Dead people don't come back, right?"
A shiver went down my back, my eyes never leaving his retreating figure as he shoved himself past me, his shoulder bumping into mine.
Once he had gone, I turned to Claudia, her tired figure falling into the new soft sofa.
"You do know you are going to have to give me his full name and all the information you know about him, right? He's with the men threatening all our lives,"
