Chapter 22

Third Person

Alex and Matt stood on the doorway as they looked at the scene in front of them. Alex slowly moved towards them as Matt stood frozen on his place unable to tear his eyes off them.

Alex stopped at the foot of Althea's body as she laid there almost lifeless, her body wrapped in bandages, her dress covered with red patches of wet and dry blood. It hurt his heart to see her like that. Even though he had promised himself that he would do anything in his power to protect this tiny human, he had failed to do so.

He finally teared his eyes from her body and looked at the Alpha, disregarding the little witch who sat beside him. The Alpha sat on his knees as he looked at Althea's face with so much pain. His hands clenched into tight fist, sat on his lap as if he was holding back from touching the human, stopping himself from doing what his heart desired.

Alex squinted his eyes as he observed the Alpha. His jaws were clenched, veins in his arms were popping out and his face stoic. But his eyes were what let him down. They held so much in them. Alex thought of all the possibilities and finally came to a conclusion.

This Alpha that had been distancing himself from females in general, for the past year was finally showing so much emotions for one female. For this human. His eyes grew wider as he realised what the little human meant to him.

But soon disappointment took over his shock as he glanced between her body and back to the Alpha again. He had let her get hurt. The one person that he was meant to protect. He had hurt her. This human was his goddess sent blessing for the Alpha. The one that he was meant to love and cherish.

His own hands clenched by his sides as he once again swore to himself that he would protect this human. Althea.

No wonder even her name was Althea. Now he knew why he felt his blood curling the first time he saw her. It was his goddess asking him to protect this fragile life that she had sent.

"I don't know why you let her go despite knowing the fact that she was sent for you." Alex finally spoke looking down at the Alpha who bent his head even lower in shame.

"I don't know why you did it, Aries. But if you don't treat her right or protect her the way you are meant to, I swear to my goddess that I will take her from you." The Alpha raised his head upon Alex's threat to take his mate away from him.

He jumped so fast that he was now standing low on his feet, between Alex and his mate. His eyes dark while his canines lengthening.

The little witch moved away from their deadly presence, however, closer to Althea's body as she started to once again fear these werewolves. The Alpha bared his elongated canines at Alex and growled at him, daring him to try. But this did not have any effects on Alex as he was set on making the arrogant Alpha see what he was doing.

So, Alex continued regardless as he looked into his dark eyes. "By the power of the goddess bestowed upon me, I will protect her from this day forth. Even if it is from you."

The room sat in silence as all eyes turned on him now. "So, please Aries. Protect her like you could have protected her. Or else I will. Like I should have."

Aries lets out a deep growl at that. "Let's not start a war over this."

Aries was taken aback by how serious Alex was about his declaration. He finally calmed himself enough to stand straight on his full length, eye to eye with Alex. His face clear of his previous fury.

"You won't have to worry about protecting her." Aries turns around and takes Althea in his arms. The familiar electric current running through his arms making him pause for a second before he stands up with her secure in his arms. Without making another eye contact, he walks out the door with the little witch timidly following close behind him.

Once again, she laid on the white hospital bed, back on his pack while Aries sat on the chair by the bed. He leaned with his elbows propped on the bed, his eyes on Althea's delicate face. Her neck wrapped in clean bandages just like the rest of her wounds.

Aries could hardly contain his fury upon seeing her raw cuts. He was mad at himself as he was the one to blame for this. If he hadn't said those hard words at her, she wouldn't have run away. She wouldn't be in pain.

He had told her to leave. He had once again asked his mate to leave. The one he was meant to love. To protect. It reminded him of the time when he had spoken those harsh words at Althea.

He was blinded by his grief of losing Noah, his only family, that he didn't realise the words he spoke and the person he threw it at. Not until it was too late. Rage had filled his mind and his heart, until it eventually corrupted his body and his soul too. And he ended up making the biggest mistake of his life. He told her to leave.

The one thing that Althea had promised him that she would do if he ever told her to. And he just went on and said it. He rejected his love. He rejected Althea. Now he had nothing but excuses for his own doing. Like right now.

He was once again blinded by his rage. For his heart wanted the new Althea. The human, Althea.

When he was finally able to see past his own misery, he thought back to the cottage as he stared at Althea's neck. "What happened back there?"

I growled lowly but he knew that the witch who sat on the chair on the other side pf the bed could hear him. So could Matt who stood by the door, his expression hard as he controlled his emotions.

She glanced at him for a second before she turns her head to look at Althea's neck. She gulped loudly as fear creeps over her body. But before it reaches her eyes, she shakes it off.

"I'm so sorry. It was because of me." She says quietly. Guiltily. "I was the one he wanted." She whispers and a soft growl follows from the door.

"And because I left her there, he got her."

"Who is he?" Aries growls loudly, anger once again coursing through his veins.

Her body shudders as she remembers his face. Hate builds up inside her as she now looks at him with the same feeling. "Why should I trust you to be any better?"

She dares question this Alpha on his own land.

Aries stands on his feet as his eyes go dark. His chest raised up and down as his breathing got heavy with anger. "I won't ask again, little witch. Who hurt her?" He snarled at her.

She thought she knew better than to trust a werewolf, but she had gone against herself and came into their land. Now she had nowhere to run or hide. From this monster that stood in front of her. Her body shake in fear as she too gets off the chair and takes two staggering steps back.

When she thought about it, she could in fact run away, but looking at Althea, she just couldn't get herself to leave her defenceless against these monsters. So, she stood tall on her feet once again, defying the Alpha.

And just as she was about to argue and cause more trouble to herself, Matt finally decided to come in between the two. "With all due respect, please let me handle her."

Aries growls at his Beta for rudely interrupting them but he lets it go as he knows what she meant to him. He had found her too and he didn't ever wish his fate upon on him. Or anyone.

Matt nods his head and turns around only to fall deep within the green eyes of the little witch. The mesmerising green eyes that looked back into his own grey ones. He takes a step towards her as she seemed stuck frozen to her place.

He holds his hand out and slowly reaches out for hers. She was so lost in his eyes that she didn't even see his extended hands that now held hers. Electricity buzzed through their hands as she loudly gasped at the feeling. Shocked, she tried to free her hand of his, but he grabbed on tightly.

The little witch looked down at their hands, his huge ones holding on tightly on her small wrists, overlapping them. Matt took a step forward as he gently pulled her to him and walked away from the room with her. She obliged this time, as confusion laced her brain.

Aries sat back on the chair as he once again looked at the human. At Althea. He clenched his jaws, his eyes still dark with fury. Knowing that her scent will help him calm, he leaned down to her face, his own almost touching hers.

He closed his black eyes as he inhaled her deeply. That sweet scent of hers that he could never get enough of. He inhaled her hungrily. This was what he was missing. That past year was a pure torture for him. He lived but he was not alive.

He had realised that he needed Althea to be alive again. He needed her with him. A lone tear escaped his eyes as it landed on Althea's cheek. He missed her. This human reminded him of her even more.

Her presence. Her smell. Her smile. Almost everything that she did, reminded him of her.

Why can she not be her? He asked the goddess as he finally opened his deep blue eyes to stare at her ghostly pale skin that had purple bruises around. He let his hand hover over her face, scared that he might break this fragile little being even more. Every once in a while, an electric current will buzz on his fingertips when it lightly brushed on her skin. He missed her. He wanted her back in his life.

Another tear dropped from his eyes and landed directly on Althea's.
