Chapter - 3 - Peer through the darkness

"I envy people that know love. That have someone who takes them as they are."
                                                                             - Jess C Scott

The thin long grass felt prickly on his face as he opened his eyes to see that he was lying on a grass bed inside a sort of forest.

He looked above him trying to gain a sense of direction as he sought to identify where he was- but he couldn't see anything for the lush green leaves of the trees around him blocked his view.

"Hello is anyone there?" he questioned, trying desperately to be able to see anything in the darkness of the forest.

He swiftly turned his head around at the sound of rustling leaves, he slowly approached the area and looked around for a sign of human existence behind the bush.

"Is someone behind the bushes? I'm lost and I need some help"

A dark shadow cautiously walked away from the bush to directly face Zafodil. As he took a closer look at her, he saw that she had slightly wavy hair and adorned a white dress that flowed down to her knees.

"Hey, I'm Katrina. Are you really lost? I know a way out of here if you want."

He couldn't ask for more. "The sooner I get out of this place the better".

Katrina seemed to agree as well if the small upward quirk of her mouth on her face meant anything.

"Where are we exactly?"

Katrina seemed to answer that question as if she had answered it many a times, "This is the Dolorem woods, we usually come here to gather food but leave by midnight."

"Who's we?"

Zafodil never got an answer though, as Katrina seemed to be distracted by the blinding light they could see ahead of them.

"Look! We're out of the forest!"

Zafodil shields his hand in front of him to conceal his eyes from the blinding light, the sound of the leaves crunching under his feet became silent as his boots hit plain ground,  the sight of a magnificent waterfall appeared into view.

It truly was magnificent but a large white gate was blocking their way to the waterfall, the gate looked unused but looked firm and steady as though it had only been built yesterday.

Katrina pulled out a long thick firm rope from a small leather bag that was help by the straps over her shoulder, she tossed out the rope over the gate and started climbing it.Zafodil follows suit and climbs up along the rope one pull after the other. He leaps down from the gate, landing on his feet.

She leaps down after him, "Follow me! I'll lead you to where the others are!" she said with a glint of excitement in her eyes.

"Alright then.." was the cautious reply she got.
