Chapter - 1 - I was satisfied. At what cost?
"Grief is not as heavy as guilt, but it takes more away from you."
- Veronica Roth.
Naomi looked out her window hoping for something to change. It was the same thing over and over again.
The same old man walking his dog on a leash, the teenage babysitters' trying to stop a five year old from stealing ice cream from the ice cream truck while the owner wasn't there. The same advertisements and posters littering the neighborhood.
Nothing ever changed.
All the girl wanted was for something interesting to happen, she would keep waiting day after day.
Looking outside the window, it was the same thing everyday. The cycle repeated itself each time.
Wake up, go to campus, talk with a few people, come back, complete some projects, sleep, and repeat.
Naomi just wanted something to change in her life, But she knew nothing would change unless she made it so.
The idea popped up in her head.
As horrible a joke as it was she knew it would give her satisfaction and would cure her boredom for a few days, it was a terrible idea, and she knew it.
She knew she didn't have a good reason to do this, nor a good reason to justify her action.
Then why was she planning on doing this?
Naomi, being well versed in photo editing, decided to use those skills for a 'practical joke' she had been thinking about for the past week.
She photoshopped a picture of her mom with another man, making it look like they were on a date and sent it to her dad just to see the reaction she could get from it.
Her father was disappointed when he saw photo and confronted her mom about it.
For the next few weeks they would be constantly fighting over the smallest of things and each time the photo was bought up into the argument somehow. She got the pleasure of them fighting.
It gave her entertainment in her boring life.
She had been planning it for about a week and even went through with it, still, somewhere she felt as if it was not her decision. Naomi woke up to the ping of her phone.
She looked at the lit up screen in confusion as to who could've texted her, Needless to say, she wasn't surprised to see the text about her father telling her he would be divorcing her mom soon.
After all she was the one who did all this, she ruined the life of everyone who was close to her, she didn't feel bad about it.
Then why were tears softly falling from her eyes?
She knew it was because of her sick satisfaction with ruining people's lives that she didn't even flinch when people looked at her with pity not knowing that this was something she had orchestrated.
The rumors of her parent's divorce spread like wildfire.
She didn't wonder how it happened. It obviously must have had something to do with her. The other students thought she would be filled with misery at the divorce of her parents.
They tried approaching her to see if they could do anything to make her feel better, they came up to her and asked if she wanted to talk about what happened.
Yet Naomi would act like nothing had happened and showed off a smile that made everyone's stomach churn with unease.
If Naomi couldn't help herself, how could they help her in any way? She promised herself she wouldn't ruin anyone else's life after Damian.
But she keeps doing so despite it. She didn't know what to do anymore, so she did what she did best.
Drift off to sleep and forget about everything that happened.
After all the best thing to do when you're unsure is to sleep it away after all.
