Chapter 19

The Alternates Institute was in chaos. Alarms blared, echoing through the corridors, a warning that filled the air with a sense of impending doom. A fire had ignited in the control room, the very place Mackenzie and Aurelia had just vacated. The flames  began to consume everything in their path, spreading rapidly within the confines of the institute.
The Alternates Institute guards were closing in. But Mackenzie and Aurelia were ready. Guns gripped firmly in their hands, they prepared to defend themselves. The first shot rang out, a deafening blast in the confined space. Mackenzie had fired, hitting a guard who was about to shoot him. It was the first life he had taken since his time in Afghanistan, a memory that sent a shiver down his spine.
As the fire continued to spread, the smoke grew thicker, filling the air with a choking haze. Visibility was dwindling, and breathing was becoming increasingly difficult. They tried to shield their mouths, but the smoke was relentless. Seeing the danger, the remaining institute guards began to retreat, their survival instincts overpowering their duty.
In the midst of the chaos, Aurelia dropped her gun and reached for Mackenzie's hand. Their fingers intertwined, they ran, their footsteps echoing through the smoke-filled corridors as they searched desperately for an exit.
Suddenly, Aurelia stopped. Recognition flashed in her eyes. "This way," she said, pointing towards a familiar pathway. Trusting her instinct, Mackenzie followed. Their frantic search had paid off. They had found a way out. The Alternates Institute was now fully engulfed in flames, a monstrous inferno that lit up the night sky. They ran to safety outside, their hearts pounding in their chests. A loud explosion echoed behind them, the shockwave making them stumble. That was close.
Safe at last, Mackenzie and Aurelia watched from a distance. Mackenzie held her close, in a comforting embrace. They watched as The Alternates Institute was consumed by the fire, reduced to nothing but a sea of destruction. It was over.
The night was filled with the crackling of the fire and the distant sound of approaching sirens. But for Mackenzie and Aurelia, the world was silent. They had survived. Together, they stood in the glow of the burning institute. The night was ablaze with the roaring flames of The Alternates Institute. The once formidable structure was now nothing more than a burning inferno, its secrets being consumed to ashes. As the sirens of police cars and fire engines echoed through the night, a black Range Rover pulled up near Mackenzie and Aurelia.
Two figures emerged from the vehicle, their faces illuminated by the fiery glow. It was Mr John and Mrs Ashton, their expressions a mix of relief and gratitude as they saw Mackenzie and Aurelia standing unharmed amidst the chaos. Mrs Ashton's smile was warm as she addressed Mackenzie, "We are very grateful for you, Mr. O'Connor. You've shut down the Alternates Programme for good."
Mackenzie, his face smeared with soot and sweat, interrupted her, "Well, I had help." He glanced at Aurelia, his eyes filled with pride and admiration. Mrs Ashton nodded, "Yes, thank you, Aurelia. You have been very brave."
Mr John, his voice stern yet compassionate, broke the silence, "Look, it's late and I know you both must be exhausted. We'll take you home tonight, but tomorrow we will need a debrief back at HQ."
Mackenzie and Aurelia nodded in agreement, their exhaustion evident in their weary nods.
They followed Mr John and Mrs. Ashton to the Range Rover. As they drove away, they watched the destruction of the Institute, the flames painting the night sky a shade of orange. Mackenzie leaned back in his seat, his hand finding Aurelia's in the dim light. He was happy to be out of there, happy to be alive, and most importantly, happy to have Aurelia safe and sound by his side.
It was 1am, the city was asleep, the black Range Rover pulled up to the Canary Wharf flat. The only sounds were the soft hum of the engine and the occasional distant siren. Mackenzie and Aurelia, were dropped off by Mrs Ashton and Mr John.
Mackenzie, unlocked the door to their flat. As he placed the keys on the sideboard, his gaze fell upon a photograph of Aurelia. It was her, the woman he loved, now standing before him not as a memory, but as a living, breathing person. He looked from the photograph to Aurelia, She was here, she was real, and he could finally be happy again.
She noticed his intense gaze and met his eyes with a soft smile. Mackenzie reached out, taking her hands in his. "I'm really proud of you," he said, "What you did back there, it took guts."
Aurelia's smile widened, her blue eye's sparkling.
"Proud of you too," she replied. Mackenzie confessed that he had finally accepted everything. He was happy to have her back and he never wanted to lose her again. But Aurelia had a concern, "I'm an Alternate and the world thinks I'm dead," she said, her voice tinged with worry.
Mackenzie reassured her, "We'll sort everything out," he promised. "Mrs Ashton and Mr John will probably help, let's not worry about that right now." He pulled her into an embrace, her head resting on his chest. His arms wrapped around her.
