17. The Other Side
Sapphire stared at her former bosses. Well, technically, not former or bosses, but still. She played with the hem of her shirt. Would they recognise her?
She knew in her heart they wouldn't. FwF didn't care about any of their, employees? Students? Who knew. The point was, they didn't care. They didn't care about your name, your story, your morals, or even how much death they caused. All they cared about was world domination.
Insane Synergy, and their leaders, didn't want to fight this war. Hell, if it was up to them, they would stop fighting and come to a peaceful solution. They literally tried their hardest not to kill someone, despite knowing that would result in them being at a disadvantage.
Everyone came to a stop. A couple people murmured in between themselves, before turning towards her.
"Do you want to have a go at being the unofficial leader? We've already gone through everyone else,"
Sapphire considered it. "What would I have to do?"
"You just have to lead us and stuff, but because we don't have to fight that much in this battle you just have to make sure we stay in formation," said a young boy.
"The author just wants a plausible reason you're a leader on your first battle anyways, and they can't think of anything else, but they know that you would want to be conspicuous," said someone else.
"O-kay," said Sapphire, still a bit confused and nervous. It wouldn't be that hard to do. Everyone was well behaved enough so she wouldn't have to yell too much.
"Just stand over there, and everyone else will get in position behind you,"
Sapphire did what she was told.
She could see others fighting ahead of her, and despite not wanting to be found out, the fighting urge FwF drilled into her made her fidgety. Her body wanted to join in on the action, while her mind knew that a) that was a bad idea, and b) she hated fighting anyways.
She watched a battle. A teacher she couldn't remember the name of was fighting a FwF agent. The agent raised their sword in what would be a lethal hit but the teacher managed to to turn it into a harmless slash across the arm. The teacher then raised their blade, and knocked the agent out with the flat of the blade. They then dragged them to the side of the battlefield.
She watched a few more of these fights before she heard her platoon name being called out by Sigils.
"Just walk over to Sigils and we'll follow you," said a voice behind her.
Sapphire inwardly sighed and walked towards him. If it was a trick, oh well. Who cares.
"Ok, just help me get their weapons off them so that it's easier to talk to them," Sigils said, gesturing to a line of unconscious FwF agents. Sapphire hesitated before kneeling down, gesturing for her platoon to do the same.
She grabbed the agent's sword, putting it behind her. She studied him for a second, then grabbed some daggers that were hidden in his sleeves, before grabbing some hair clips and a pen that were in his headband. Those were specifically if you lost your weapons.
This continued for a small amount of time, when a yell was heard from farther down the line.
"Where the fu-" Nico hastily cast a spell, "are my weapons?!". The person shouted. They were rather tall (but wasn't everyone), but what was scary was how their face seemed almost friendly, if not for their wild eyes. The teachers seemed to sense this too, and looked around uneasily.
The man stood up.
"Sir, please calm down, we only want to ensure your and our safety while we ta-" Henwy started.
"My safety my a-" and he lunged at Henwy. Sigils jumped in and pushed the man away from him. Sigils started going after him, only to have Henwy pull him back and whisper something to him. They continued to whisper, but Sapphire was distracted.
The man had pulled out a pen, which would be fine except both he and her came from FwF.
Several thoughts flew through her mind. Some highlights include "Grenade!", "Why didn't they remove it?", "They wouldn't have known!", and "Everyone duck!". She said the last one aloud, except that it was 'gruck' instead of duck, because apparently that meant grenade, duck appropriately. She didn't know why they didn't just say duck and- why was she thinking about this right now?
Without thinking, she created a shield in the form of a cone above everyone. She had no idea how strong the grenade was, and she didn't trust her magic not to break into pieces. If it did, it would just create more shrapnel.
She got up and started looking around.
"You did well sweetie," a voice said. She realised it was the person she had been checking before the grenade. They must have woken up at some point. She chuckled nervously. Hopefully he didn't report her magic back to FwF.
"I'm going to need you to hand over all your pens sir," she said, holding her hand out.
"Fair," he said, handing them over. She would normally search him anyways, but something about him just gave her good vibes. She pressed the booklet in his hands and started to get up.
"You can have it sweetie," he said, giving it back to her.
"You sure?" she asked.
"I just have a few more missions before I get retirement, I don't need to be discharged dishonestly," he said. She nodded. She got that. There was a reason she was feeding fake information to FwF.
Her platoon number was called back to base.
"Well, that's me," she said, standing up.
"See you sweetie!" he called.
