16. A Call to Arms
a/n Apparently I like third person more so we're keeping it
Sapphire was in her room when it happened. She was busy thinking about how Ian knew, and whether or not her bogus report was good enough. It had to be detailed enough, with most new information, without actually giving useful stuff away. Ian had helped her.
"The key is to embed a few grains of truth in the lies, so that people cross reference that information and ignore the faulty information."
"But what? It still has to be semi-useful."
"You could mention that Nico literally can't shoot or use any sharp thing whatsoever."
"You sure that doesn't compromise him?"
"I'm sure. He's used to it."
He had also given her some bogus information that would take ages to verify, battle or not. And just as well. The day after, she heard the 'battle bell'. It reminded her of a discord ringtone, honestly. She grabbed her sword and headed out. She and Nico had discussed what to do in case FwF commenced a battle.
"Nico?"
"Yeah?"
"What should I do if I have to fight FwF? I don't want them to know I have magic, because then they'll consider me a traitor. And I don't think I want to be considered a traitor."
"Hey, you're talking to a so-called 'traitor'!" Nico said laughing.
"Really?"
"Well, kind of, though to be honest, the moment they realised how bad I am at anything but magic, they just gave me a job that would've killed me if not for the fact that we don't kill." They. We.
"But seriously, what should I do?"
"You might have to just participate in the swordfighting faction."
She found the lines for the swordfighting in the main. "Sapphire! I thought you would be in the Magic line?" Henwy exclaimed. Sigils just sighed.
"Hen-wy, do you think it's a good idea to perform magic in front of a magic hating organisation that happens to be your employer?"
"Oh."
Sapphire simply nodded to Sigils. She didn't like to talk about FwF. It was a subject she wished to avoid. She tried remembering what they had taught her instead.
"So what I'm going to teach you is a beat, but before I do that I need you to show me your generic cut," Henwy said. Sapphire showed him on one of the training dummies. "Alright, now do the same thing but on me. Don't be afraid to hit me," Henwy instructed.
She swung, and in a flash, Henwy swung down to beat back her blade. "Wha- how do you do that?" Henwy grinned. "You want to swing the blade like your opponent, but on a slightly different angle. You also want to try to hit the blade in this area." he said, gesturing to about the 3rd quarter of the blade.
She tried and, embarrassingly, missed the blade completely. This happened several times in fact, until she figured out that she swung her sword faster than Henwy did, meaning she had to wait a little longer. The next time he swung; she waited before bringing her blade down, and hit it. "Good job! Now let's practice until you can do it consistently,"
She suddenly thought of something.
"How do we know that it's a battle?" she asked.
"FwF likes to attack us during our door to door advertising," Sigils answered. Sapphire stared at him blankly.
"Door to door advertising?"
"Yes,"
"Wha- never mind." she said, shaking her head. Sigils grinned at her. "To think I thought this place was sensible." She muttered, shaking her head.
"And Biffle?" she asked. "He was one of the guardians during said advertising," Sigils responded.
"We're clear to go now Sigi-ls," said Henwy, re-appearing. "Ok then," Sigils lifted his voice to a shout, "Everyone, prepare to fight! We're now going onto the battlefield to help the others! Remember to protect yourself first, but don't forget to protect others around you! And remember, knock-outs only!"
Knockouts only. She had to remember that. Lucky for her though, her 'platoon' was assigned to keep watch over the whole battle, meaning she wasn't likely to have to engage in battle.
They sauntered off towards the battlefield.
