12. The Truth
I have made roughly 50 decision changes since I woke up. I planned on telling Ssundee before breakfast, but then I chickened out at the last moment. I considered going up during breakfast, but that's too obvious. I don't need everybody gossiping about me.
I know I need to tell him before class begins. If I don't I won't have time after. There's no time after that. I know I could probably arrive late, but I don't know how long I could be with Ssundee. I don't want to skip magic or swordfighting.
Fuck it. I'm telling him. I take a deep breath, count to eight, then knock on his door. It opens. SSundee's right there. I don't think I counted on him basically expecting me. Nope totally didn't.
"Sapphire hi! What brings you here?"
"I uh, uh can we talk privately?" I splutter.
"Sure, come in! Madeline is out right now."
"Madeline?" I question.
"Oh you didn't meet her? Madeline's my wife!"
"But I thought- Kate-"
He suddenly laughs. I jump.
"Yes, people do tend to get confused. No, Kate's just a filler because Madeline doesn't like being onstage. They don't mind." I manage an Oh.
"Anyways, what did you want to talk to me about?" Right. The admission.
"Uh, I'mactuallyaspyforFwFandI'mmeanttobereportingbacktoday." Clearly, the cool, calm and collected Sapphire took a holiday. I waited nervously. Would he be mad? I don't want him to be mad. Maybe this was a mistake. Then to my shock, he starts grinning.
"Good! I was hoping you would admit it!" I'm shocked. How could he tell?
"You could tell?" My voice is just above a whisper. If he could tell, that means I'm bad at my job. I don't think I'm bad at it, but now I'm not sure.
"What? No! In fact, the other members of staff said that if they hadn't known, they wouldn't be able to tell."
"But you knew."
"Yes."
"How?"
"A little bit of future seeing helps." He says that so nonchalantly too. It's infuriating. The fact that my anxiety went through the roof for nothing is annoying too.
"Wha- you know what? Never mind. What's important is that you don't kick me out."
"Why would I kick you out when I already had a plan for this?"
"I've known you for about five minutes and that just feels so you." I grumble. "Not what I thought you were going to do, but the fact that you had a whole plan in place." I clarified.
"So I can stay?"
"Of course!"
"Thank you SSundee." I smile, maybe my first one that wasn't calculated.
"No problem, now head off to your class."
"Bye!"
"And Sapphire?"
"Yeah?" I say.
"Call me Ian."
